6 I think everyone secretly wonders if they ll be remembered after they re gone. I have a theory that this is why history museums fascinate us so much. Most are filled with the stuff of yesteryear s average citizen, allowing the people in our time to peek behind the curtains of history. by Andrea Vanni All photos contained with these articles are credited to Andrea Vanni unless otherwise noted. Snohomish County has a multi-layered history. There s native culture, pioneer, logging, industrial and aviation history, which you ll find displayed throughout the county. Granite Falls: Plotting the Past Granite Falls is a town along the Mountain Loop Highway, and due to its size, I was surprised when I heard the Granite Falls Historical Museum was not your standard smalltown museum. Fred Cruger, the museum s curator, has used technology to bring history alive in an innovative way that I just had to check out for myself. The museum highlights the history of mining, logging, railroad, social and business affairs in the Granite Falls area. It s laid out as if you were walking through a town there s a hardware store, a doctor s office, a millinery shop, a logging camp, and a home furnished with furniture and décor from the early 1900 s. A new approach to history is found in the Granite Falls mobile tour: The tour officially ends at stop #18 at the museum, but #21-36 are an added bonus and give further explanation to some of the displays you ll find in the museum. The museum uses cutting edge technology to record maps which show overlays of hundreds of vintage maps with accurate survey references and aerial photographs. Historical hand-drawn maps were made with the assumption that all sections were square (making them simpler to draw), but in reality nothing was quite that uniform. Museum staff and where to go volunteers have placed hundreds of points on each map on their correct coordinates and allowed the software to fill in everything else. This allows for much more accuracy when overlaying and comparing maps, historical and modern photos and parcel lines. In places where period photographs are available, small arrows mark the location and the direction in which the camera was pointing clicking on the arrow brings up the picture allowing you to see what you would have seen back in the day had you been standing on that spot looking in that direction. There are also almost 200 objects of historical interest noted on the maps, complete with the stories and pictures bringing history to life. The Dangers of Public Service by Fred Cruger Guy Terhune, who assumed the duties of both Marshal and Water Superintendent of Granite Falls in 1932, experienced a close call when he was called upon to shoot a vicious stray dog. According to the local newspaper, The crack of the gun was followed by a vicious hollow sound as the bullet bounced back and hit Guy on the head after going clear through the dog and hitting a rock. The bullet hit an inch from his eye, but did not injure him, although the eye has turned a vivid purple. Guy Terhune was a hero to his wife Pearl, and daughters Marie, Mabel, Helen, and Maxine when a family portrait was taken in Photo credit to Granite Falls Historical Museum Granite Falls Historical Museum 109 E. 7 Granite Falls Historical Museum Arlington s Stillaguamish Valley Pioneer Museum: Step Back in Time Through my exploration I ve learned many communities in Snohomish County started as logging, dairy and mining towns, and therefore have a strong pioneer identity. Aspects of this everyday life circa 1900 are beautifully and painstakingly preserved at the Stillaguamish Valley Pioneer Museum in Arlington. The artifacts come from everywhere in the Stillaguamish Valley spanning from Granite Falls to Stanwood, and from Arlington to Darrington. The building itself is a nod to the area s logging history the poles in the museum s lobby are actually felled from the Pilchuck Tree Farm in Arlington. Each section in the museum represents different aspects of pioneer life. The main level includes typical rooms in a 1900s-era house, a barbershop, a general store, a jewelry store, a clothing store, a sporting equipment store, a post office, a saloon, a schoolhouse, and a military area. Walking through the exhibits harkens back to a stroll down Main Street. The basement displays include a café, a butcher shop, a shoe repair shop, various tools, and office, farming and veterinarian equipment. The top floor depicts what a logging camp would have looked like, including taxidermy of wildlife found in the area. I loved having that glimpse into what it would be like to wander into a 19th or 20th century home, shop or school. I wonder what items I use throughout my day might someday be artifacts for tomorrow s curious museumgoers! Hibulb Cultural Center in Tulalip: Experience Tribal History & Culture The Hibulb Cultural Center, located on the Tulalip Tribal Reservation, is not just a museum to house the Tribe s past, it s also a cultural center a place where tribal culture can grow and thrive and be preserved for future generations. The center presents the history of the Tulalip people in their own words. There is rich tribal art throughout the center, from the hand-carved front doors to the center s welcome figures. These figures were carved by James Madison and Joe Gobin, renowned Tulalip carvers, and are made from the same tree as the story poles (totem poles) that grace the entrance of the Tulalip Resort Casino. 8 Take Flight: The History of Aviation in Snohomish County Snohomish County has a rich history of aviation, thanks in part to the Boeing Factory in Mukilteo, the only commercial jet assembly plant in North America. Tour the plant at Boeing Tour & Future of Flight Aviation Center to get an understanding and appreciation of technology as applied to the science of flight. If it s historic planes you re interested in, you re in luck there are three impressive aviation museums on Paine Field. The Flying Heritage Collection is a private collection (owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen) that showcases warbirds and technologies from Historic Flight Foundation features a collection of the most important aircraft produced between 1927 and 1957 all restored and airborne again. The Museum of Flight Restoration Center is a working restoration center, where volunteers rebuild aircraft from the 1920s to the 1960s to go on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. The center has 5 main displays the Canoe Hall, a permanent gallery, a rotating gallery, the Long House Room and the Veteran s Hall. The permanent gallery showcases the traditional ways of life including artifacts up to 2,000 years old and interactive displays, all which can be seen in a selfguided tour due to the descriptive placards, video and audio recordings. The salmon display with a streamside view and underwater perspective describes the commercial fishing which was once an important source of income for the Tulalip people. Today environmental issues have caused the supply of salmon to dwindle too much to be used for any commercial purposes, although salmon is still an integral part of the Tulalip culture. The center display describes how the Tulalip Tribes are run today their diverse economy, natural resources, government structure and culture. Other displays of note include the knitting display (the Tulalip people used to make knitwear where to go Hibulb Cultural Center rd Avenue NE, Tulalip, WA Evergreen Cemetery 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA For a tour of the grounds, download the Everett Library s walking tour, which highlights 52 sites and stories about the cemetery. Photo credit to Hibulb Cultural Center for Eddie Bauer!), an emotionally moving exhibit about the government boarding schools of the early 20th century, traditional regalia for ceremonies, a gallery about ancestral lands and the culture of trading and gambling. The digital family tree feature provides tribal members the opportunity to get detailed information about their ancestors, lineage and clan. All the information is presented in English and Lushootseed, the language of the Tulalip people, which is written in the international phonetic language. Historically, Lushootseed was only a spoken language, so the international phonetic language was used to create a written form. The second room is a temporary exhibit space currently showing an exhibit called The Roots of Wisdom, which is about healing cultural and environmental damage using a combination of traditional knowledge and cutting-edge Western science. Check the website to see past and current exhibits: The next stop is the Veteran s Hall honoring tribal members who have served in the US Military. Originally planned as a temporary exhibit, the installation became permanent due to its popularity. A replica of a traditional longhouse is particularly interesting for visitors since the original longhouse is considered sacred and not open to the public. Upon entering, the delightful scent of cedar greets you. The longhouse is made of hewn cedar planks, and includes a mock fire pit in the floor surrounded by ancient story poles and photographs of tribal elders. Plans are underway for a 40-acre nature preserve on the property, which will someday include nature trails, interactive trails and viewing platforms in this nature preserve giving reasons to revisit time and again. 6 SNOHOMISH COUNTY Fall & Winter 2015

9 Historical Everett Everett s layers of history are visible throughout the city. Here are some of the best places to get a dose of history while in Everett: The Port of Everett: Visit the Historic Everett Waterfront, complete with interpretive exhibits located throughout the marina. This interpretive program showcases the heritage of the lumber, commercial fishing and boat building industries that operated on the waterfront. The exhibits are located at the Waterfront Center, the Fishermen s Tribute Plaza, the boat launch park, the west end park, the 14th Street walkway and the Weyerhaeuser Building. Grand Avenue Park Historical Everett: Remnants of the Past Studying history is like watching a movie or reading a book and already knowing how the story ends. Now that Everett is a modern city, complete with a delightful mix of historic architecture and new buildings, it s hard to imagine that at one time Everett was a logging city, referred to as the Pittsburgh of the West or the City of Smokestacks. Everett grew incredibly fast. In 1855, the land was surrendered to the US by the native people as part of the Treaty of Point Elliott. In 1890 there were only about three-dozen people living in Everett, and by 1893 had a population of about 5,000. Five years later Everett had grown enough to take the county seat from Snohomish, the founding city in the area the deciding votes evoking a colorful story of political shenanigans. After World War II and the Great Depression Everett wanted to better their city s image, and so they changed their slogan to the Evergreen City suggesting the scenery and year-round color of the cedars, fir, ash and birch trees native of the area. World War II brought another big change to Everett Boeing came in and eclipsed the logging industry as Everett s identity (see the sidebar Take Flight: The History of Aviation in Snohomish County ). Today you won t see factories the Smith Street Mill is the only one left but what you will see are the historical homes and architectural gems of a bygone era of the cities roots. The fine houses that line Grand Avenue in Everett are a glimpse into the world of Everett s early upper class. Homes of notable families, including the Rockefeller s, can be found in the Rucker Hill Historic District and downtown Everett s Hewitt Avenue, a registered historical district that includes a number of buildings by renowned architects such as C. Ferris White. Tour Everett s historical buildings with the Everett mobile tour: The Northwest Room at the Everett Public Library: The library s Northwest Room offers materials and services that enhance understanding of the Pacific Northwest region, with special collections of maps, pamphlets, oral history interviews and historic photos relating to Everett and Snohomish County history. Two regional history specialists are also available to help answer questions, provide programs or listen to your story. American Legion Memorial Park: This golf course was developed during World War II and overlooks the site of the Snohomish tribal village of Hibulb (or Hebolb). A portion of American Legion Memorial Park itself is a registered archaeological site. Bonus: cross the street and check out Grand Avenue Park, a place with killer views and a smattering of historical plaques and markers. If haunting the streets in front of famous old houses isn t enough of a thrill, there s always the chance to chase ghosts at another famous Everett location the 100-year-old Evergreen Cemetery. Wandering the rows and reading the names on the stones conjures up images of who they were, what their lives were like, and how they came to find their final resting place. Evergreen Cemetery is a great place for such wanderings and the Rucker Tomb is its pinnacle. Shaped like a pyramid, this tomb is famous for a couple of reasons it s the eternal home to the Rucker s, one of Everett s founding families; and it was featured in a big scene in the Sylvester Stallone movie Assassins. People flock to the tomb for photos from one of the film s famous scenes. Nearly every community across Snohomish County is home to its own set of historical attractions, markers and personalized histories. There s an endless supply of entertainment for history buffs we ve only just scratched the surface here! For more history and heritage, visit Fall & Winter 2015 SNOHOMISH COUNTY 7

11 The World Food Travel Association defines food tourism as the pursuit and enjoyment of unique and memorable food and drink experiences, both far and near. This is pretty much how I define traveling in general too. by Andrea Vanni My husband and I joke that when we travel, we plan our whole trip around our meals local specials we want to try, specific restaurants we ve heard about, or other distinctive food and drink experiences. I have a feeling we re not the only ones according to the World Food Travel Association, 25% of visitor spending goes towards food and drink while traveling! When I travel, I love to seek out those special places that have great food or drink, use local products and make an effort to be eco-friendly. Located in an area rich with natural resources lush farmlands, forests and Puget Sound Snohomish County is chock-full of such places. Food and beverage establishments all over the county are making good use of the abundance of fresh food available to them in order to provide their guests exceptional dining and drinking experiences. Dining Local: Bistro San Martín Martín Estrada-Perez, the chef and co-owner of Bistro San Martín in Arlington, gets his job satisfaction from watching guests take their first bite. Steven W. Van Matre, restaurant manager and co-owner, says Martín has always cooked from his heart and soul, and he s passionate about giving guests a great experience. This much becomes clear when within five minutes of meeting Martín I m seated in the secret outdoor patio with a giant slice of the most beautiful cake I ve ever seen and a glass of sparkling wine. He watches me take my first bite, and my expression was undoubtedly one of pure bliss. fancy dinner parties at home. Together they opened Bistro San Martín, a fine dining restaurant serving world-inspired cuisine in quaint downtown Arlington. As Steve said, It was a ten year overnight success! A lot of hard work and love went into this restaurant, and it s noticeable. The staff is like family (some of them actually are members of Martín s family) and the bistro has a slew of loyal customers. The restaurant is busy every night it s open (Tuesday through Saturday). The food is lovingly prepared using high-quality ingredients, many of which are sourced locally, including heirloom tomatoes from Garden Treasures in Arlington, chèvre cheese from Yarmuth Farm in Darrington, seasonal produce from the Everett and Arlington farmers markets, beer from Skookum and River Time Brewing in Arlington, and over 160 wines, 90% of which are from Washington. They also strongly believe in supporting the arts community, so the restaurant is decorated with paintings, glasswork and other art from local artists and artisans. The attention to detail in the food, décor, and customer service is outstanding. Bistro San Martín is truly a gem worth checking out. Martín dreamed of having his own restaurant for most of his life, but his path to success wasn t a direct one. Martín and Steve met in San Francisco in the 80s, where Martín was cooking in restaurants and Steve was working as a software engineer. They eventually followed jobs to the Seattle area, where Martín worked in a series of family and fine-dining restaurants, gaining experience in a variety of food genres. Then, in a somewhat serendipitous turn of events, the startup Steve was working for was acquired and he was let go, and around the same time Martín was also laid off. So they started looking for something else to do. A series of fortuitous events preceded, and they found out that what is now Bistro San Martín (then called The Bistro ) was for sale. So they took a leap of faith. Martín had experience in fine dining and had a variety of contacts in the industry, and Steve had business experience and knew how to write menus after years of hosting Bistro San Martín where to go Bistro San Martín 231 N Olympic Avenue, Arlington, WA Fall & Winter 2015 SNOHOMISH COUNTY 9

13 This eco-friendly focus comes from owner Barry Bettinger s childhood experiences growing up on one of the country s earliest conservation farms. His father instilled in him the value of recycling and sustainability a value set he s carried with him throughout his adult life and into his business model. All of the ice cream is made and packaged right here in Snohomish County, and due to the company s rising popularity, can be found in a number of locations all over the state. Snoqualmie Ice Cream s main tasting room, located on site in Maltby, Washington, is open May 1st through the end of October, Thursday through Sundays. Raise a Glass: Aesir Meadery When I started telling people I was going to tour a meadery, I got a lot of blank stares. Mead is wine made of honey the nectar of the gods! Instead of grapes, different varieties of honey and spices are brewed and fermented together to create flavors that are quite different from traditional wine. Aesir Meadery is the brainchild of Erik Newquist, and is located in a fairly small garage tucked away in an alley in downtown Other yummy places to get a locally made sweet treat: Galaxy Chocolates in Sultan stocks handmade chocolates, birthday cakes, wedding cakes and fresh baked goods. They also serve espresso and ice cream. Mukilteo Chocolate Company in Mukilteo is known for artisan-quality chocolates and fudge that are handmade on the premises. Each chocolate confection is individually crafted using high-quality European chocolate. Snohomish Pie Company, with locations in Snohomish and Mountlake Terrace, uses apples and cherries from Washington, and marionberries, raspberries and flour from Oregon. Skip Rock Distillery in Snohomish uses locally sourced potatoes, apples and blackberries. around Legion Park in Everett. Erik loves to experiment with his mead in fact, he s been brewing special batches for a favorite customer s Game of Thrones viewing parties using a medley of Haitian herbs, and lately he s been working on a brew that blends his already delicious honey concoctions with beans from Velton s Coffee, a small quality-oriented wholesale coffee roaster in Everett. The name comes from Erik s Nordic heritage Aesir are the pantheon of Norse gods that his ancestors worshipped, such as Thor and Odin. These elements are reflected in Aesir s unique logo. As far as ingredients go, the saying the proof is in the pudding comes to mind.
