In the 40+ years of MTR, there has been exactly one rally that was held outside of the Midwest. Where was this event? Louisville, KY Grand Forks, ND Erie, PA Windsor, ON 38 teams attended Midwest Tandem 78 which included a visit to Churchill Downs. Many teams took an optional Saturday evening cruise and dance aboard the Belle of Louisville; the last authentic sternwheeler steamboat in America.

Appleton, WI Indianapolis Columbus, OH Springfield, IL 150 teams attended the Sprinfield Rally in The banquet was attended by CATS wearing tuxes and top hats and featured the Pink Panther again. COWS (Couples on Wheels) brought their mascot, IMA COW. 3. This host city featured a tour of the Experimental Aviation Association Museum? Fairborn, OH St. Louis, MO Dayton, OH Oshkosh, WI 134 teams attended the 1986 Rally. Oshkosh is the home of The Worlds Greatest Aviation Celebration, and Saturday s ride went to the Experimental Aviation Association Museum. 4. Back Home Again in Indiana was the theme of this rally. Fort Wayne Columbus, IN Indianapolis Anderson, IN Back Home Again in Indiana, gave teams the opportunity to ride around the Major Taylor Velodrome on Friday night. The event was attended by 557 teams. 5. This rally labeled itself The Last Great Rally of the Century. Where was it? Appleton, WI Omaha, NE Columbus, OH Midland, MI This rally in 1999 hosted 539 teams and featured a dog bone shaped license plate. After the event, Jim Noll, with help from the steering committee, wrote MTR Made Easy, a guideline for hosting an event. 6. The post tour ride of the event featured a Garfield theme. Ann Arbor, MI 11 Indianapolis 95 Rockford, IL 15 Fort Wayne 14 Rally Round the Fort was hosted in downtown Fort Wayne with 350 teams in attendance. Many of the routes followed the Wayne Trace, where General Mad Anthony Wayne s army marched in The post tour was headquartered in Marion, home town of Garfield creator Jim Davis. 7. The day after a violent thunder storm, this rally went to Hell. Appleton, WI 96 Ann Arbor, MI 11 Middlebury, WI 12 Springfield, IL 88 The rally in Ann Arbor was attended by 347 teams. The banquet was held outdoors at German Park on Saturday. Food was excellent, but severe weather (bad enough to shorten the University of Michigan football game) shortened the cookout. On Sunday, teams headed west, with the obligatory stop in Hell, MI. 8. This host town s population (658) was exceeded by the number of rally participants (475 teams) French Lick, IN Shipshewana, IN Plainfield, IL St Charles, MO

3 Ride to a Slower Pace was held in Shipshewana, a town of 658, in 2010 in the heart of Amish country. This small size allowed very short transit zones into the quiet roads of northern Indiana. 9. This rally visited the Trestle Trail Bridge which is 1600 feet long and crosses the Little Lake Butte de Morts. Appleton, WI 07 Kansas City, MO 02 Rochester, MN 09 Ankeny, IO 16 Tour de Fox Valley was the second rally held in Appleton and was attended by 408 teams. You might have been thinking about the High Trestle Bridge near Madrid, Iowa (Ankeny 16) which crosses the Des Moines River Valley. 10. This rally visited a glass factory in the boyhood home of Wendel Wilkie; the Republican nominee for president in Anderson, IN 85 Indianapolis 95 Akron, OH 84 Springfield, IL 08 Saturday s ride went to Elwood, the boyhood home of Wendell Wilkie, where a glass factory was visited. 11. At this rally the formation of the Tandem Club of America was announced Kokomo, IN 76 Indianapolis 95 St. Charles, MO 80 Springfield, IL 79 Midwest Tandem 76, the first Midwest Tandem Rally was held on Labor Day Weekend. Thus the tradition of hosting MTR on this holiday weekend began. 35 teams attended the rally. The rally was patterned after Tandem 75 which was billed as the National Tandem Rally, but actually drew mainly people from the east coast. At Sunday evening s banquet, the formation of the Tandem Club of America (TCA) was announced. 12. This rally featured laps around the Washington Park Velodrome; the oldest track in the US (opened 1927) Kokomo, IN 76 Cleveland, OH 89 Omaha, NE 98 Kenosha, WI 77 Midwest Tandem Rally was attended by 32 teams. Teams rode around the famous 1/5 mile Washington Bowl National Bike Racing Track on Saturday. Monday s ride was called a Breakfast Ride, and took riders to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, IL. Thus a tradition was started that continues to today. 13. The tradition of a Monday morning breakfast ride began with a ride to Illinois Beach State Park at this rally. Aurora, IL 90 Rockford, IL 79 Springfield, IL 88 Kenosha, WI This rally passed Offutt Air Force Base, home of STRATCOM (formerly SAC). Omaha, NE 98 Rockford, IL 15 Dayton, OH 03 Kokomo, IN 76 Party the Plains, attended by 353 teams, replaced the traditional Friday Ice Cream Ride with an ice cream walk due to traffic concerns. 15. This rally included a ride to Lake Superior, and was the furthest north of all the MTRs. Houghton, WI 90 Fargo, ND 83

4 Duluth, MN 01 Green Bay, WI 91 A Duluth Odyssey, attended by 393 teams, visited the port city on the western tip of Lake Superior. The rally was covered by the Duluth News Tribune whose story ended with PIGS might not fly, but they certainly bike. 16. This rally celebrated the centennial of flight Fairborn, OH 13 Rockford, IL 15 Dayton, OH 03 Oshkosh, WI 07 Celebrate in Dayton, celebrating a decade as GOATS, the centennial of flight, and the bicentennial of the state of Ohio. 17. Rediscover Columbus (2019) will be hosted at Edinburgh. This musician, who performed at the 2004 Hospice Concert, will not be entertaining us. Peter Frampton James Taylor John Mellencamp Davey Jones Different by Design is the trademark of Columbus and it became the theme for the rally. 477 teams attended the rally. Saturday ended with a free concert and fireworks. Performing at the concert was the late Davy Jones, formerly with the Monkees.
