1 1 Peace Walk Route Maps/Schedule Welcome & Register We are happy that you are considering joining the October "Maine Walk for Peace & a Sustainable Future." The walk is being organized by Maine Veterans for Peace. The goal of the walk is to connect various communities that have become reliant on military production for jobs. We hope to accelerate a statewide discussion about the need to diversify Maine s growing dependence on military production. Last year, Connecticut passed legislation creating a statewide planning commission to begin the process of moving away from its heavy reliance on military production. We need jobs building things like rail, solar, properly placed wind and other sustainable measures to help us deal with the coming reality of climate change. The Pentagon has announced that Rangeley is one of four sites along the east coast being considered for deployment of an expensive ($4 billion) and destabilizing missile defense interceptor base. These systems will be targeted on Russia and China and are key elements in US first-strike attack planning. General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems in Saco has a multimillion dollar contract to build gun barrel kits for the Army. In North Berwick, Pratt Whitney has a $2 billion contract to build F-35 Joint Strike fighter engines. Bath Iron Works has billions of dollars in contracts to build more destroyers for the Navy. Taken together almost 10% of Maine s gross domestic product derives from military spending. How can we ever end war unless we begin to deal with our domestic addiction to Pentagon spending? Some nights we will sleep on church floors and other nights we will have home hospitality in local homes. Walk for an hour, a day, or for the entirety. Everyone is welcome. The less cars we have to shuttle each day the better so please try to make other arrangements to get to and from the walk.

2 2 Below you will find the daily walk schedule. Please note that we will usually begin walking at 8:30 am each day and walk about three miles per hour. Most evenings local activists will organize a potluck supper for us around 6:00 pm. The public is invited to attend any and all events. On some of the nights a short program will follow the supper. All walkers will observe strict non-violence and no drugs or alcohol will be used during the walk. The peace walk will be led by Buddhist monks/nuns from the Nipponzan Myohoji order. They are an order from Japan and specialize in doing peace walks all over the world. We would like for you to let us know if you plan to be with us for any part of this peace walk so we can more effectively make our logistical plans. Contact us at danellis@vfpmaine.org and let us know the date(s) you plan to join us, your name, and contact information for each person. For more info please call (207) before the walk begins or (904) during the walk. What to Bring? If you plan to walk we recommend you bring: good walking shoes; water bottle; rain gear (including rain pants); sleeping bag & pad (some nights we will be provided with home hospitality); sun screen, moleskin for blisters; and hat. We will have a covered vehicle to haul all walker gear so you will not have to carry anything. We will also have a minibus to give people rides when they get tired during the walk. Please try to avoid bringing your car if at all possible. If you have specific location questions you can call the name listed for the local coordinator in each town below or call the VFP walk organizers at numbers listed above. Thanks and see you along the road. This will be a community building experience for all of us.
