1 INSTITUTO DEL MAR DEL PERU 6 TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PACIFIC SQUIDS 5 TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SQUIDS 1 14 November 214 SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT Considering the important role of the squids in the marine ecosystem and its relevance in the Pacific, we are pleased to announce the 6 th International Symposium on Pacific Squids and the 5 th International Workshop on Pacific Squids that will take place in the city of Lima from 1 to 14 November 214. The first International Symposium on Pacific Squids took place in Trujillo Peru in 1999, and afterwards in La Paz BCS Mexico in 22 and 21, in Lima Peru in 25 and also in Coquimbo, Chile in 28. Parallel workshops were developed on the physiology of the growth of the jumbo squids, the use of lights to track the squid s fleet, the role of the squids in the marine ecosystem and its impact on the commercial species, the development of the embryos in vitro and the comparison with the Dosicus gigas fisheries. The results obtained in these events were very important, because they allowed the diffusion and coordination of investigations on D. gigas and other commercial species in the Pacific Ocean, such Ommastrephes bartrami, Todarodes filippovae, Nototodarus sloani, and Dorytethis gahi, among others, about several aspects of the evolution, biology, ecology, fishery dynamic population and behavior related to the environmental variability. Besides, the diversity of species, the interconnections between them and the exploration of deep waters, constitute new challenges for science, which force scientists to enlarge the horizon and perspectives of investigation. In this opportunity, the symposium and workshop will take place under the frame of the 5 th Anniversary of the Instituto del Mar del Peru IMARPE, Technical Specialized Organism of the Sub Sector Fisheries, of the Production Sector, oriented to scientific investigations as well as the study and knowledge of the conservation of the marine environment. Therefore, it will have a special connotation, being an excellent occasion to commemorate this anniversary with appreciated friends and colleagues of brother countries from the Pacific Basin. As well as in before opportunities we count with the sponsorship of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council CIAC, important scientific support in these events, as ell as with the support of national and international organisms and diverse institutions and associations of the Fisheries Sub Sector of Peru.
2 6 TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PACIFIC SQUIDS The symposium will take place from 1 to 12 November 214, at the Hotel and Suites SOL DE ORO, located in Calle San Martin 35, Miraflores, Lima 18, Peru. The objective of the symposium is to present current information on squid research of the Pacific Basin with special emphasis in Dosidicus gigas, one of the most important species in the East Pacific. Investigations on squids and octopuses in America will also be included, with the purpose of expanding the horizon of the symposium and being able to obtain a wider integration of the knowledge of these species within the ambit of our continent. Thus, it is expected that we will share knowledge and experiences as well as we will strengthen the national and international cooperation links that contribute to sustainability of fisheries and conservation of biodiversity. Presentations of Magisterial Conferences, Oral Expositions, and Posters will be made. The Magisterial Conferences will be in charge of prominent scientists of recognized experience in squid s research. The oral presentations will last 15 minutes, followed by a period of 5 minutes for questions. Poster presentation will be vertically positioned and the surface area for poster display will be 12 cm high by 9 cm wide. The symposium will comprehend five working sessions: Systematic, biogeography an biodiversity Morphology an ecology of paralarvae Biology, genetics and ecology Fishery and evaluation of stocks Environmental variability REGISTRATION FORMAT For registration enter to the following link: INSCRIPTION QUOTA Categories US$ Before September 15 US$ After September 15 Professionals 1 15 Students 5 75

Yamashiro and J. Arguelles. The authors are requested to present their manuscripts in English to Professor Paul Rodhouse, principal editor of the special edition of Fisheries Research, before the last day of the meeting (Thursday November 13, 214) and no longer than January 31, 215. If you have any question about the manuscripts, or any need of advice, please contact Professor Paul Rodhouse during the meeting. LANGUAGE English and Spanish will be used in both events. Simultaneous Interpretation will be available during the Symposium. 5 TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SQUIDS Two workshops will be carried out on 13 and 14 November, 24 Workshop 1: Effects of the environmental variability of the populations of Pacific squids The main factors of the marine environment that affects the behavior and abundance of squids, especially Dosidicus gigas, and its impact in the Pacific fisheries, will be discussed in the workshop, with the purpose of identifying priority research lines and coordinating efforts to develop the joint projects that support the investigation and the rational use of these species. Discussion will be based on the issues of the workshop Cephalopod population dynamics environmental effect, stock assessment and management carried out as a side event of the CIAC 212, in Florionópolis, Brazil, and it was published in a special edition of the Advances in Marine Biology: Rodhouse P.G.K., Pierce G.J., Nichols O.C., Sauer W.H.H., Arkhipkin A.I., Laptikhovsky V.V., Lipinskijj M.R., Ramos J.E., Gras M., Kidokoro H., Sadayasu K.,Pereira J., Lefkaditou E., Pita C., Gasalla M., Haimovici M., Sakai M., Downey N Environmental Effect on Cephalopod Population Dynamics: Implications for Management of Fisheries. 5 The workshop 1 will take place in the Auditorium Jorge Sánchez Romero at the 6 th floor of the Instituto del Mar del Peru IMARPE, located at Esquina Gamarra y General Valle s/n Chucuito, Callao, Peru. Participation in the workshop will be limited. Workshop 2: Investigation methodology of paralarvae of Ommastrephidae The purpose of this workshop is to establish the basic procedures for the research of paralarvae of the family Ommastrephidae, with emphasis on the species Dosidicus gigas. Within the procedures, the sampling methodologies, fixing and preservation criteria and techniques for the determination of species at morphologic, genetic, and biochemical levels will be considered, as well as the ones related with the studies of age and growth. The workshop 2 will take place in the Secondary Production Laboratory (fourth floor) of the Instituto del Mar del Peru IMARPE, located in Esquina Gamarra y General Valle s/n Chucuito, Callao, Peru.
