1 th 11 International Paleolimnology Symposium December 15-18, 2009 Guadalajara, Jal., México THIRD CIRCULAR The organizing committee of the 11 th International Paleolimnology Symposium, in agreement with the IPA board, is announcing that the new dates for the meeting will be from the 15 th to the 18 th of December We apologize to all the paleolimnology community for the inconveniences caused by the postponement of the symposium but we hope you understand we were forced by the circumstances related with the Influenza outbreak in Mexico. We do hope that most of you will be able to make the necessary arrangements to fit the new dates for the meeting in your agenda. We would like to encourage all the attendees that can come to the meeting in December to hold your registration fees with us until December. In case that you wish to do so, you will be able to update your abstract until October the 10th, when the registration process will close. For those unable to come to the meeting in December, Ms Marina Vázquez will deal with your cancellation and registration fee refund, please get in touch with her directly. We would also like to suggest, as an option for cancelation (to avoid paying banking fees), that you can transfer your registration to another colleague who would also benefit from the lower early registration fees. Hotel bookings for June 2009 made through the symposium s web page will not be charged to your cards, so there is no action to take. If you have doubt about this please contact Ms. Hortensia Diaz (mariah@ecodsa.com.mx). Hotel bookings made directly with the hotel have to be dealt with the hotel, but a total refund will be possible. For those that had not registered before, the registration fee until October the 10 th 2009 will remain at $425. New registrations and abstract submissions will be possible until October the 10 th through the symposium s web page ( Venue: There are no changes to the venue; the meeting will be at Hilton Hotel in Guadalajara. Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco, has a very comfortable climate all year round, during December the average temperature is around 18 C with occasional showers, however mornings and evenings can be somewhat cool. Guadalajara s International Airport has local flights connecting to all major cities in Mexico (Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, etc.), and direct flights from several

2 cities in the United States. Guadalajara is also connected by several motorways which facilitate access by car or bus to and from any location in Mexico. The Hilton Hotel is only 25 minutes from Guadalajara s International Airport. Car Rental is available at the Airport. The Hilton Hotel is located on "Avenida De Las Rosas 2933" in front of the "Expo-Guadalajara" Exhibition Centre (at the corner of Avenida Mariano Otero and Avenida De Las Rosas ); it is within walking distance of the Plaza del Sol shopping centre and a short taxi ride from Downtown Program: The general structure of the meeting, student prices, field trips, ice breaker, dinner, etc. will all remain unchanged. Details will be given soon in relation with plenary speakers and possible changes in the list of special session, but changes will be kept to a minimum. Tentative schedule: Time Sun.-Mon. 3 On-line registration and abstract submission will be through the symposium s web page. On-line registration and abstract submission will close the 10 th of October, 2009 at midnight, Central Mexico time ( No abstracts will be received after this date. On site registration will be possible during the meeting. Abstract format: There are no changes in the abstract format. Abstract can be typed using any word processor, but should be saved in a pdf format. The title should be typed in upper case, using Times New Roman, 12 point font; it should not exceed 180 characters. Leave one blank line after the title. Authors names should follow, typed using Times New Roman, 12 points font. Each name should be followed by a numerical superscript to point to correct address entry. Leave one blank line after the authors names. Addresses should follow, typed using Times New Roman, 10 points, italic font. Each address should start with the corresponding numerical superscript of the author. The last line of the address sections should be the of the first or the presenting author in round brackets. After the address, leave one blank line. The text of the abstract should be typed using Times New Roman, 12 points font, left justified, no indentations. Margins should be set at 3 cm at each side (up, down, left and right). The body of the abstract should not exceed 2500 characters. Any tables or figures should be inserted in the body of the abstract. In any case, abstracts should not exceed one letter size page (21.59x27.94 cm). Only one page abstracts in a pdf format will be accepted. Student Prizes: The Springer publishing company, publishers of the Journal of Paleolimnology, has agreed to sponsor book awards and certificates for the best student oral and poster presentations. To be considered for these prizes a student must be the first author and the presenting author of the contribution. If you wish to participate, please indicate by ticking the relevant box in your registration form. The winners for these prizes will be selected by a special committee, if you wish to be considered to be part of this committee, please indicate by ticking the appropriate box in your registration form. Dinner party: There are no changes, a traditional Mexican dinner that will be held in the nearby village of Tlaquepaque on Thursday 17 th. Please select the number of tickets you require by ticking the correct box in your registration format. Cost: $80 (prices in US dollars) Field Trips: Pre-congress field trip: Ceboruco-Santa Maria del Oro-Ixtlán del Río

4 There are no changes in the cost or itinerary of this field trip. Leaves from the Hilton Hotel in Guadalajara the morning of Sunday 13 th and returns to Guadalajara to evening of Monday 14 th in time to attend the ice-breaker. On Sunday we will visit the Ceboruco lava field with a hike to the top of the volcano (45 min. aprox.). The views of the vegetation and recent lava flow makes worth the effort! Information about the geological evolution of the region will be available. The evening will be spent in the hotel by the shores of Santa María del Oro lake. Information about the origin of the caldera, limnology and paleolimnoloy of the lake will be presented. On Monday 21 st we will visit the archaeological site of Ixtlán del Río and return to Guadalajara. Please select the number of tickets you require by ticking the correct box in your registration format. Cost: $210 in double room accommodation (price in US dollars). A minimum of 16 persons is required to run this trip. Mid-congress field trip to Guachimontones archaeological site. Leaves at mid-day of Thursday 17 th from the Hilton Hotel in Guadalajara. This visit will allow all participants to become familiar with the history and archaeology of Mesoamerica. Guachimontones is a relatively recently excavated area (1990) that was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in The Teuchitlán culture which built this city, reached its maximum development between AD 200 to 400, therefore it was coeval with the great Maya and Teotihuacan cultures in eastern and central Mexico, and as happened to many sites in Mesoamerica, was abandoned around AD 900. Cost: There is no extra cost, this activity is covered by your registration fees and all attendees to the meeting are welcome. Post-congress field trip to Tequila. There are no changes in the cost or itinerary of this field trip. Leaves early on Saturday the 19 th towards one of the tequila making haciendas near the town of Tequila, where we will have lunch and share some information about the history and making process of Tequila. In the way to Tequila we will be able to appreciate the magnificent view of the Tequila volcano, and the junction of two major volcanic provinces in Mexico. Visa information: If you are a citizen of: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Island, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, U.S.A.,

5 Uruguay or Venezuela; you don t need a visa to enter Mexico as a tourist for up to 30 days, although you must present a valid passport and fill out an immigration form for tourists and business trips, which can be obtained in travel agencies, airlines or at the point where you enter Mexico. If you are a citizen of any other country you do need a visa to enter Mexico.
