6 Left: Inca ruins, Machu Picchu Below: Floating islands of the Uros, Lake Titicaca T HE I NCA E MPIRE When Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, he found the Inca, an advanced society that stretched for more than 2,000 miles along the spine of the Andes Mountains. The Inca had built an extensive road system, rope suspension bridges and elaborate stone buildings erected without mortar. The Inca, weakened by smallpox brought by Old World explorers, also were embroiled in civil war as brothers Atahualpa and Huáscar battled for control of the empire. In 1532, Atahualpa killed his brother, claiming total power. Later that year, Pizarro captured Atahualpa. The Inca leader offered a room filled with gold, which historians today value at nearly $50 million, for his freedom. Pizarro accepted the ransom, but double-crossed Atahualpa and killed him. With its leader gone, the empire fell and the Spanish soon dominated the region. Antonio Executive Puno. Puno, Peru s folkloric capital, is on the northern shore of Lake Titicaca. This full-day train ride takes you from Cuzco, the ancient Inca capital, to Puno and Lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Inca. Legend has it that the sun god Inti rose out of the lake and created Manco Capac, the first Inca. The temperature gets noticeably cooler as you ascend to higher altitudes and the Altiplano, the Andean plateau. The train stops at La Raya, at 14,177 feet, the highest point on the route, before descending to Puno and Lake Titicaca at 12,549 feet. The trains, decorated in the elegant style of the turn-of-the-century Pullman coaches, are outfitted with comfortable wingback seats. You ll feel pampered as staff lavishes you with attentive service. A three-course lunch, followed by coffee, is served at midday. Later, afternoon tea provides refreshment. Along the way, musicians perform traditional Andean music. Then, enjoy a fashion show of clothing made from the wool of the alpaca, the region s doe-eyed camelids.
