The Inca had built an extensive road system, rope suspension bridges and elaborate stone buildings erected without mortar. The Inca, weakened by smallpox brought by Old World explorers, also were embroiled in civil war as brothers Atahualpa and Huáscar battled for control of the empire. In 1532, Atahualpa killed his brother, claiming total power. Later that year, Pizarro captured Atahualpa. The Inca leader offered a room filled with gold, which historians today value at nearly $50 million, for his freedom. Pizarro accepted the ransom, but double-crossed Atahualpa and killed him. Meals THE INCA EMPIRE When Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, he found the Inca, an advanced society that stretched for more than 2,000 miles along the spine of the Andes Mountains.
