1 23: Rev. per. Ent. 27: Diciembre 1984 (30 Setiembre 1985) A Checklist and Generic Key to the Tabanidae (Diptera) of Perti with Special Reference to the Tambopata Reserved Zone, Madre de Dios q Richard C. Wilkerson3 and G. B. FairchId SUMMARY Two hundred and twenty-eight species of horse flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) are documented for Peru, with 73 species collected from a single lowland forest site in southeastern Peru. No other site in the Neotropics has as many reported species. A key to the subfamilies, tribes, and genera of the known Peruvian species is also included. INTRODUCTION Compilation of this list of Peruvian Tabanidae began initially with a survey of the Tambopata Reserved Zone. To the list of the Tabanidae of this Reserve we have added all other records known to us from Peru. The Reserve is an area of approximately 5,500 ha located about 39 km (air) from Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios (12 15 S lat. and W long). It is in a Subtropical Moist Forest life zone (ONERN 1976) with an annual rainfall of mm and mean annual biotemperature of C. The average altitude of the reserve is 300 m, and the topography is generally flat with some small hills and oxbow lakes. Except for the immediate environs of the tourist hotel and scientific base (the Explorer s Inn ) the area is made up of virgin forest. There are several distinct forest types that are dictated by the type and drainage of the soil substrate. They range from flood plain and bamboo forest to well drained forests with tall canopies (40 m or more). The Tabanidae (horse flies, deerflies, tabanos ) are a diverse family of true flies with worldwide distribution. There are approximately 3500 described species, of which 1100 are named from the Neotropics. 1 Recibido para publicacicq 31 mayo Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry, P. 0. Box 1269, Gainesville, Florida 32602, U.S.A. 37 PERUVIAN HORSE FLIES Previous studies on the Tabanidae of Peru have consisted principally of scattered descriptions of new species or superficial fauna1 lists derived from the literature. Soukup (1945) gives a brief list of the Diptera of Peru, the Tabanidae largely culled from the literature up to 1940, especially the Catalogue of Kroeber (1934). He gives very few specific iocalities, though listing 164 names. Kroeber (1951), in a report on an expedition to south Peru from the Hamburg Museum, gave a list of 20 genera and

2 38 REVISTA PERUANA DE ENTOMOLOGIA. Vol species known to him from Peru, often with localities and synonymy. To this list he added 14 species, with localities, taken by the expedition. Philip (1958, 1960) described a number of new species from Peru, and discussed others, mostly from Tingo Maria in the Department of Huanuco. Finally, Carrasco (1972) published a list of 163 species for Peru of which 29 species from southern Peru were collected by himself and determined by Fairchild; ten of these were not determined to species. Unfortunately, the localities copied from the literature, and those on specimens he or Fairchild determined are not distinguished. Other than suggesting that the Peruvian fauna is a rich one, these previous lists of names are often of dubious validity and uncertain ascription. SOURCES OF SPECIMENS We have been fortunate to study several extensive collections of Tabanidae from Peru. Fairchild (G.B.F.) h as seen much of the material reported by Philip (C.B.P.) collected by Ross and Michelbacher in Tingo Maria and now in the California Academy of Sciences (CAS), as well as material in the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge, Mass. (MCZ) collected by WK. Weyrauch and the specimens in L. L. Pechuman s (LLP) collection in Cornell, New York, collected in Avispas, Madre de Dios and Quincemil, Cuzco, by Luis Petia. Fairchild also made a small collection in the Rimac Valley above Lima in By far the largest collections seen from Peru are those from the Rio Tambopata Reserve near Puerto Maldonado, made in 1979 by J.B. Heppner and by R. C. Wilkerson (RCW) twice in Other than these collections, we have depended mainly on specimens in Fairchild s collection or records derived from determinations made by him from various sources. He also studied the types of most neotropical species, including those from Peru, reported in a series of publications (1953, 1961, 1966a, b, c, d, 1967) culminating in his Catalogue (1971). ~"" ~Y*aL*v*IJ ALL.-_,..;~+:~.w an&/or lucaliui1~ I,.:_-- of C&Cl sources of specimens seen by Fairchild included in this list follow: American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), New York; Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA), Gainesville, Florida; Zoologisches Museum der Math. - Naturwissenschaftlichen Facultat der Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin, Berlin, East Germany; San Diego State University, San Diego CA, USA; British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH), London; National Museum of Natural History (USNM), Washington, D.C.; Canadian National Collection (CNC), Ottawa; Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; Museum National d Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France; Staatliches Museum fur Tierkunde, Dresden, East Germany; Zoologische Sammlung des Bayerischen Staates, Munich, West Germany; Museo de Historia Natural, Universidad National Mayor de San Marcos, Lima (MUSM); Rijk smuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, Netherlands. GENERAL ECOLOGY Most horse flv females require vertebrate blood for completion of at least the second and subsequent gonotrophic cycles. Males do not feed on blood but on nectar. Females also utilize sugars as an energy source. Horse flies have a large range of hosts including mammals, birds and large reptiles. Horse fly larvae are usually predacious and are found mostly in aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats. For further general information on the family Tabanidae in the neotropics see the following: Barrett0 (1946), morphology; Fairchild (1969), generic classification; Fairchild ( 197 l), catalogue; Fairchild (198 1)) general information with annotated references; Krinsky (1976), disease agents transmitted by tabanids; Goodwin and Murdoch (1974), immatures; and Wilkerson et al. (1985), mating behavior. For purposes of describing horse fly distribution, we consider Peru to consist of three main regions: 1. The Pacific coast, and valleys of rivers flowing into the Pacific. This area is mainly desert with intensive irrigated cultivation along the short coastal rivers. 2. The highlands, extending from 1500 m to over 4000 m, densely populated and intensely cultivated since ancient times, either irrigated or dependent on low to moderate rainfall, but with little original woody vegetation remaining. 3. The eastern lowlands and foothills. A region, mostiy beiow i5ov m, sparseiy popuiated, wrth high rainfall and where not cleared for agriculture, extensively covered by high tropical to subtropical forest. The first region has been little collected, and most of the records of Tabanidae have come from the vicinity of Lima or southward to Tacna. We have encountered almost no records of Tabanidae from the northern half of the country at any elevation. The few species reported have been either precinctive, stragglers from adjacent highlands, or widespread species.

3 Dloembre 1984 WILKERSON & FAIRCHILD: TABANIDAE OF TAMBOPATA 39 The fauna of the Peruvian highlands is distinct, consisting largely of species of Scaptia, Scione and Dasybasis, the first and last showing close relationships to Chilean forms, while &zone seems to have its main center in Ecuador. Most collecting has been from the southern part of the country, above Lima and Arequipa and around Lake Titicaca. Unlike the other regions of Peru, relatively extensive collections of Tabanidae have been made at a few localities in the eastern lowlands, primarily at: Tingo Maria, Department of Huanuco; Quincemil, Department of Cuzco; and Tambopata and Avispas, Department of Madre de Dios. Smaller collections are available from Iquitos, Department of Loreto and Satipo, Department of Junin. These collections reveal the predominance of an essentially Amazonian fauna. Species found in Western Ecuador and Colombia north into Panama are generally absent, while many species from Tambopata extend north into the Guianas and east to the mouth of the Amazon. CONTENT AND ARRANGEMENT OF LIST The following list includes only species that have: been seen by us; for which we have firsthand published information by credible witnesses; or which have a Peruvian type locality. The arrangement of genera and species follows Fairchild s catalogue C 197 1). Specimens from the reserve may be found in the collections of the authors (at FSCA), in the Museo de Historia Natural (Lima) or in the United States National Museum of NaturaI History. The source(s) of a record are given in the list. They may include a literature reference, and/or the presumed depository(ies) of the specimens examined by Fairchild. A record followed only by Fairchild s initials (GBF) indicates the specimen(s) are in his collection (now at FSCA). Stypommisa (Styphocera) antennina Philip 1969 is not keyed, as we are unsure of its position, We have studied the type from Peru and a pair from Ecuador. The species will probably key out to Dasybasis (Agelanius) in the key. It somewhat resembles D. (A.) Zautus Hine, though smaller and with very hairy antennae. The Ecuadorian specimens have a normal 4- annulate antenna1 style, so we doubt that the 3- annulate style of the holotype is of generic significance. We see no resemblance to any Stypommisa.
