4 Soybean was the fastest growing crop in Brazil, in the last 40 years Photo: RR Rufino 1. Why the XI WSRC should be in Brazil Brazil is one of the largest producers of agricultural commodities, with soybean being the leader in production and in exports. The immense grain production also supports a robust meat industry that has made Brazil one of the main food exporters. Brazilian agribusiness is a pillar of the country s economy, and it is based on strong investments in basic and applied research. Soybean was introduced into Brazil in 1882 from the United States of America (USA) and tested in the low latitude conditions of the Brazilian northeast (12 S). It did not thrive right away because the genetic material tested did not evolve in such low latitudes. The cultivation was successful in this country from the 1940s, when tested in the extreme Southern Brazilian locations, in latitudes (27 S to 34 S) where subtropical conditions resemble those occurring in the Southern region of the USA, the source of the genetic material. At the end of the 1940 s, production reached 25,000 tons, rapidly advancing to about 200,000 tons by the end of the following decade and to one million tons by the end of Therefore, in 2020, XI WSRC in Rio de Janeiro would celebrate the important milestone of 140 years of the first soybean introduction into Brazilian lands and 80 years of its flourishing in the country. The 80 years of successful history made this crop the gold grain of a nation and led the way for Brazil to become one of the most important soybean producers and exporters worldwide. The great leap in soybean production in Brazil took place during the 1970 s, when it reached 15 million tons which lead to the crop becoming the leader of the national agribusiness, and generated the development of other crops, especially corn, which, together with soybean, promoted Brazil as a major producer and exporter of meats. The impact of soybean on the Brazilian agribusiness sector has been so significant that we can divide the sector into two phases: before and after soybean. Largely dependent on genetic material introduced from the USA until the late 1970s, another great leap in Brazilian soybean development occurred in the 1980s, with the development of varieties adapted to the conditions of low latitudes of the Brazilian Midwest, an impressive breakthrough from Brazilian science, something that could be reproduced in other areas in the world with the same latitude. Agribusiness accounts for approximately 25% of GDP, 45% of exports and 35% of the country s jobs. Also, the soybean complex is the main product of the export agenda. Given its productive efficiency in food production in low latitude tropical regions, Brazil presents itself as one of the main producers in the future food supply of humanity, with soybean leading this process. In the 2016/17 crop, growing an area of 33.9 million hectares from 33 S to 5 N, Brazil produced 114 million tons (Mt) and ranked second among the world s largest soybean producers, just behind the USA (117 Mt). Projections indicate that the country has the potential to become the leader in world soybean production over the next few seasons. Finally, to bring the international scientific community up to date about the spectacular progress of the Brazilian agribusiness, particularly the soybean cultivation, we invite you to come to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Also, to invite the soybean community to visit the city that was home to the FIFA Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016; a city to inspire scientific discussions at the 2020 WSRC; a city known worldwide for its undeniable natural charms made up of hills, forests and beaches, together with its friendly, charismatic and happy people, embraced by the Christ the Redeemer statue. 4 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO 2020 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO

Security In order to improve the security for residents and visitors, Rio s Government created the CICC - Integrated Center for Command and Control - a high-tech center working 24 hours a day with officers from eight different government institutions, including the Municipal Guard, Civil Defense, Traffic Department, Military Police, Civil Police, Fire Department, Mobile Urgency Assistance and Federal Road Police. Together, using cameras, they control the main areas of the city and can rapidly solve issues of security, traffic, public order and medical emergencies. 4. Host organization: Embrapa Soybean Center with the support of academic/research institutions The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) was founded on April 26, 1973, and has the support of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (MAPA). Since its foundation, it has taken on the challenge to develop a genuinely Brazilian model of tropical agriculture and livestock to overcome the barriers that limited the production of food, fiber, and fuel in the past. This effort has helped to change Brazil. Presently, our agribusiness sector is one of the most efficient and sustainable on the Planet. From 1970 onwards, Brazil incorporated a wide area of infertile savannah lands into one of the country s main producing areas of grain, fiber and meat. A unique situation that can serve as an example to other areas in the world. Embrapa is organized into 46 research units, spread all over the country, and has virtual laboratories abroad: USA, Europe, China and South Korea, called the LABEX program. Embrapa Soybean, also known as the Brazilian National Soybean Research Center, a unit from Embrapa established in Londrina, PR, is leading the bid to host the XI WSRC. Founded on April 16th, 1975, Embrapa Soybean has had a history of contributions to Brazilian agriculture, based on a broad network of research and partnerships, which involve several representatives (national and international) in the productive chain. At the national level, research practices involve other Embrapa research centers, as well as cooperatives, universities, farmer associations, private corporations, State Agricultural and Livestock Research Organizations, foundations providing support to research, and rural extension organizations, among others. The agricultural system, within which soybean is inserted, has undergone profound changes in recent years. In Brazil specifically, different production systems allow soybean to be cultivated from high to low latitudes, including tropical and sub-tropical areas. To face the different challenges of such a vast area, Embrapa Soybean maintains a modern research infrastructure and advanced bases in different Brazilian regions, with more than 70 PhD scientists and a large group of support technicians exclusively dedicated to soybean research. Those specialists are from all fields of knowledge, associating basic and applied research with the demands of the productive chain. The MAPA s chamber of the soybean production chain, integrated with members from the Industrial and Commerce sectors, is supporting the Brazilian application to host the XI WSRC. One of its members, the Brazilian Association of Soybean Producers (APROSOJA) will participate in the organizing committee, helping to reduce the gap between science and development in the productive sector. The Brazilian Academy of Sciences and The Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), representing all scientific and academic associations in Brazil, are formally supporting Embrapa s proposal for the possibility that WSRC 2020, be held in Brazil. Embrapa s interaction with universities and other research organizations, supports the formation of human resources and know-how in soybean research and technology in Brazil and other countries. Embrapa Soybean hosts the production of several master and PhD thesis each year and supports international researchers worldwide, in programs such as the LABEX Program. Some of the academic and research institutions that will be involved in the organization of the conference, have a long history of research on soybean such as the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of the State Rio Grande do Sul, Federal University of Viçosa, Federal University of Pelotas, Superior School for Agriculture (ESALQ) from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), which are considered to be among the most prestigious and largest Brazilian universities. Other state research institutes, like the Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC), will also be involved in the conference organization, and have already formally expressed their support. Aerial view of Embrapa Soybean 5. Gathering science and agribusiness into a dynamic innovation network If Brazil is chosen to host the XI WSRC, our intention is to conduct it jointly with the IX Brazilian Soybean Congress-BSC (IX Congresso Brasileiro de Soja). The BSC takes place every three years and has been an important forum for discussion of problems and opportunities in the Brazilian soybean production chain, jointly with stakeholders from the Brazilian academy, with the productive sector and industry. 10 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO 2020 CLICK HERE AND ALSO WATCH ON YOUTUBE XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO

8 Our aim by jointly conducting the XI WSRC and the IX BSC is to create an opportunity for participants from the academy and from the productive sector to interact at the international level. Brazilian Soybean Congress (BSC) is one of the greatest scientific soybean meetings around the world, gathering around 2,500 participants each event. Its attendance includes mainly Brazilian scientists, field consultants, growers, and graduate students, among other important representatives of the soybean production chain, not only from Brazil, but also from neighboring soybean producing countries. In 2020, the BSC will be in its IX edition and it will be celebrating 22 years from the first event. With this long successful history, BSC has been focused on the scientific discussion of the most important topics of soybean production. The event helped the Brazilian soybean sector to develop and promote the country to become one of the most important soybean producers worldwide. Uniting IX BSC and WSRC11 in 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, is a lifetime opportunity to make the greatest scientific soybean event in history which will really push scientific development to the edge. Research and development for Brazilian agriculture 7. 14 MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, LIVESTOCK AND SUPPLY SECTOR CHAMBER OF THE SOYBEAN PRODUCTION CHAIN Ofício nº 01/2017/CSCPS Brasilia, June 20, DR. RICARDO VILELA ABDELNOOR Chairman of the Continuing Committee World Soybean Research Conference Subject: Support for the Brazilian bid to host WSRC XI Dear Chairman, 1. Brazil is the second world largest soybean grower, just behind USA. The projections indicate that it may become the number one grower in a few years. Soybean research in Brazil is quite strong. Along with Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) there is a consolidated network of institutions that provide soybean production knowledge and technology, such as state institutes, universities, cooperatives and foundations. 2. At the field, Brazilian soybean farmers are highly technified and are very enterprising. The Brazilian agribusiness sector is well developed, accounting for more than 20% of country s GDP, more than 40% of total Brazilian exports and more than 30% of the country s total jobs. 3. The infrastructure and expertise of Rio de Janeiro to hold major events have reached a new level, especially after hosting the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Besides, Brazil is a place of natural beauty and happy people. 4. The Soybean Sectorial Chamber is a support body to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply. It comprises representatives of public and private entities that make up the soybean production chain, such as farmer associations, financing agencies, transport regulatory agencies, processing industry associations, seed trade associations, plant breeding associations, exporters' associations, among others. The Soybean Sectorial Chamber would like to support the Brazilian bid to organize and hold the WSRC XI in Sincerely yours, GLAUBER SILVEIRA DA SILVA President of the Sectorial Chamber 24 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO 2020 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO

15 Ofício 405/2017 GERIN / PRESID Brasilia, June 22, Dr. Ricardo Vilela Abdelnoor WSRC Continuing Committee Chairman Savannah, United States Dear Chairman, Considering the soybean agribusiness in Brazil and the expertise concentrate at Embrapa Soybean, the Brazilian Cooperatives Organization (OCB) supports the recommendation of the Brazilian Agricultural and Livestock Research Corporation (Embrapa) to host the next World Soybean Research Conference (WSRC) in Brazil in The Brazilian Cooperatives Organization (OCB) is the national apex organization for all the cooperative enterprises in the country. OCB represents cooperatives, which congregate 12.7 million people and generate 376 thousand direct jobs. Our mission is to represent the cooperative model front to the government bodies, as well as offer services to help them to improve their business management. The Brazilian cooperatives are very active in the agribusiness field. There are agricultural cooperatives spread for all the 27 Brazilian States. These cooperatives unite more than 1 million farmers and combine more than US$ 5.2 billion annually. The good results come in consequence of constant investment in management improvement and solid partnerships with reference institutions as Embrapa. Currently, Brazil is responsible for approximately 27 percent of the world's soybean production, and the country can become the World's largest producer and exporter of soybeans grain and byproducts. The soybean complex, which gathers the productive chain of soybean, is one of the main items in the country's Trade Balance. In 2016, the Brazilian soybean complex exports reached US$ 31.4 billion. The cooperatives were responsible for US$ 585 million in exports of the soy complex in Therefore, we strongly believe that the Brazilian agribusiness, being very robust and internationally competitive, could aggregate significantly to the WSRC legacy. We are certain that the Brazilian cooperative system could also take enrich this important research initiative. 16 São Paulo, July 11 th, /2017 To: Ricardo Vilela Abdelnoor Chairman of the Continuing Committee World Soybean Research Conference Dear Mr. Ricardo Abdelnoor, On behalf of Council of Biotechnology Information (CIB), a not-for-profit association dedicated to promoting science based information about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), we hereby support Brazil s candidacy to host the XI World Soybean Research Conference (WSRC), in 2021, in Rio de Janeiro. This candidacy will be presented by one of the country s most important agriculture research companies, Embrapa Soybean, during the X WRSC in Savannah/ USA. The Brazilian Agribusiness structure is organized and robust. Small, medium and large scale producers are supported by a system of extension and production that integrates public and private institutions. Brazilian agribusiness generates about four million direct and indirect jobs and the soybean complex is responsible for about 15% of the country s total exports. Brazil is the second largest producer of the grain and could be the first by In 2017, the soybean complex exports will probably reach nearly US$ 30 billion, including products and goods for several industries. Certainly, the early adoption agbiotechnology in soybeans, in 1998, has contributed to these impressive figures. We believe that technology is the key for a competitive and sustainable agriculture and that Brazil is doing well in this regard, especially with the soybean example. Due to its relevance for the world s production of the culture and to Embrapa Soybean s expertise in the research of genetic improvement of the plant, both through biotech and conventional breeding, we believe Brazil is the perfect place to held the XI World Soybean Conference, in Yours sincerely, Adriana Brondani CIB s executive-director Rua Cubatão, 86/ 909 conj. 909 Vila Mariana São Paulo SP Brasil CEP Fone XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO 2020 XI World Soybean Research Conference - RIO

Along with EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) there is a consolidated network of institutions that provide knowledge and technology for soybean production, such as state institutes, universities, cooperatives and foundations. At the field, Brazilian soybean farmers are highly technical and are very enterprising. The Brazilian agribusiness sector is well developed, accounting for more than 20% of country s GDP, more than 40% of total Brazilian exports and more than 30% of the country s total jobs.
