CIDER SYRUP Makes about 2 cups 4 cups apple cider 1¼ cups packed light brown sugar 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Combine the cider, brown sugar, butter, vinegar, and lemon juice in a medium nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Cook at a low simmer for 30 minutes, or until syrupy and reduced by half. Remove from heat and cool slightly before using. Store, covered, in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Nothing kicks off a day of sightseeing better than a delicious and hearty morning meal, and this area boasts some of the best breakfast spots around. For those in want of a jolt of caffeine, Stagecoach Coffee in or Latte Lounge in Oneonta are a couple of the perfect places to start. If it s something sweet you fancy, Schneider s Bakery features doughnuts and cinnamon rolls to die for. And if it s a classic egg or pancake platter you yearn, Diner delivers. Two local pizza parlors, Tino s and Sal s, compete for bragging rights for the best cold cheese slice. Brewery Ommegang Not only famous for being the birthplace of baseball, is where American craft beer brewing was reborn. In the 1800s, and Otsego County were considered the country s capital of hops production, but production came to a halt during Prohibition, and along with it the demise of the region s brewers and distillers. In 1997, Brewery Ommegang restarted the traditions of craft beer brewing. Returning a 136-acre parcel of farmland to its hops past, Brewery Ommegang was the first farmstead brewery to open in the United States in more than a hundred years. Since then, the region has become home to several breweries, wineries and other craft beverage producers. To explore them, check out the Beverage Trail. The first official cuisine trail in New York State, the 37-mile route features breweries, wineries, a historic cider mill, and a distillery honoring the region s beverage-making legacy and celebrating crafting beverages renowned across the country. Beer connoisseurs can enjoy tastings and tours at Butternuts Beer & Ale, Red Shed Brewery, and Brewery Ommegang or stop by the Brewing Company taproom for regular events like Tasty Tuesday. 11 World Class Experiences in a Bucolic Setting For an arts-focused getaway, start with the acclaimed Fenimore Art Museum. Situated on the shore of Otsego Lake on land once owned by novelist James Fenimore Cooper, its surroundings are as beautiful as the art within. The museum houses significant collections of American Folk, American Indian art, as well as changing exhibitions by well-known artists. This year, see your favorite rock stars from the 1980s and 90s in Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits. Nearby, Oneonta offers a selection of top art collections including the Yager Museum of Art & Culture at Hartwick College, and the Wilber Mansion. At the Yager, permanent and changing exhibitions range from ancient artifacts of the Upper Susquehanna s first human inhabitants to contemporary art. Among the collection s strengths are North and South American ethnography, Renaissance art, American Impressionism and Andy Warhol. The Wilber Mansion, a Victorian Era gem located in the city s historic district, is home to the Community Arts Network of Oneonta (CANO), with ongoing exhibits, workshops, and performances. Just down the road on Route 28, step into the glassblowing studio at Bobby Sharp Glassworks, a workspace where you can watch the artist at a glass furnace and join a workshop to make your own creations. Also just outside of Oneonta, Gilbertsville Expressive Movement (GEM) is home to an outdoor sculpture park in the middle of the historic village of Gilbertsville. In, the newly-opened Henry March Gallery features contemporary works by local emerging artists. Nearby is The Art Garage, a pop-up space in a three-bay garage featuring Who Was James Fenimore Cooper? Where did get its name? With a history dating back to Revolutionary times, was established in 1786 by William Cooper, a judge and congressman who owned about 10,000 acres of land. Cooper and his wife Elizabeth had 12 children the 11th was James Fenimore Cooper ( ), considered to be America s first novelist. Writing about life in this Iroquois Indian frontier region, he became an international best-selling author with The Leatherstocking Tales and The Last of the Mohicans. imaginative, rotating shows of contemporary art. In the town of Schuyler Lake, The Old Blacksmith Shop Gallery turns a former farrier s workspace into a gallery featuring works by area artisans and craftspeople. For history and architecture buffs, a visit to Hyde Hall, located within the bucolic grounds of Glimmerglass State Park is a must. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hyde Hall is a 50-room British-American country house from the time of Jane Austen. Home to five generations between 1819 and 1943, it offers a peek into a time when powerful English families enjoyed large estates in their former colonies. If you re a fan of the performing arts, the Glimmerglass Festival gathers some of the world s best opera and musical talents to the shores of Otsego Lake for a series of summer performances. Choose from day and evening performances of top operas such as La Traviata and The Ghosts of Versailles, musicals such as Showboat, the premiere of new works, as well as special guest performances at the Alice Busch Opera Theater. His love for the land added much to 19thcentury Americans awareness of the environment, and many sites around Otsego Lake still bear the names in his novels. There s no better way to explore than with a visit to one of the many state parks and forests. Hike a trail, such as Glimmerglass State Park s self-guided Sleeping Lion Trail, for an outdoor adventure off the beaten path. There are plenty of ways to add camping to the mix, as well.
