3 BASEBALL For most Americans, is synonymous with baseball. Discover the game s rich history at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, from the first ball to the Gallery where plaques honor the game s greatest players. Tucked away on Main Street, the Hall stands as the definitive repository of baseball treasures. Spectacular artifacts, multi-media entertainment and exhibits that define every aspect of baseball s history bring America s pastime to life and the story of the game s impact on our culture. Just down s two-block Main Street, you ll find Doubleday Field. Legend has it, the game of baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday on Phinney s cow pasture in Today, visitors can catch a game throughout the summer months, The Hawkeyes, a collegiate team, calls Doubleday home field. Owned and operated by the Village of, the field is available to fulfill Bucket List wishes for any team. Historic Damaschke Field, located in Oneonta, is home to the Oneonta Outlaws, another collegiate baseball team. Enjoy an evening game, spend some time boutique shopping and enjoy a nice meal in the city s quaint Main Street area. America s most prestigious Hall of Fame has spawned a myriad of memorabilia shops throughout the region. 4 OUTDOOR FAMILY FUN The area is a sportman s paradise, whether you re a casual hiker, an avid cyclist, golfer or boating enthusiast. Otsego and Canadarago lakes are two of New York s top cold water fisheries and provide endless opportunities throughout the year, from winter ice fishing to trolling for bass and salmon during the summer months. Miles of rivers and streams lure trout fishermen come April 1. We re home to four state parks where visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking and swimming. More than 20 state- and countyowned lands offer quiet, rustic outdoor hiking or cross-county skiing, bird-watching and snowshoeing. Visitors can enjoy vistas of Otsego Lake, dubbed Glimmerglass by James Fenimore Cooper, from a number of public spaces around this pristine body of water, including Lakefront Park, Fairy Spring Park, Three Mile Point and Council Rock in and around the Village of. The Susquehanna winds its way south through the City of Oneonta, where visitors can enjoy riverside walkways, multi-use, groomed and well-marked paths. The city s well-maintained parks offer a variety of family-fun amenities, from tennis courts and swimming pools to playgrounds. The region s rolling hills and country roads offer miles of enjoyable, sometimes challenging, road bike routes. 5 PERFORMING & FINE ARTS Our lushly-forested hilltops, fertile valley farmlands and pristine waterways set a unique stage for art lovers of all genres. The Glimmerglass Festival entertains music and theater lovers with internationally-acclaimed opera, lectures and other performances throughout their summer season in. All of the theater s 914 seats are less than 70 feet from the stage, providing patrons with clear, un-amplified, natural sound. Unique sliding walls allow the audience to enjoy fresh, country air. The Smithy Center for the Arts offers exhibitions and performance art throughout the year, located in s oldest building. Enjoy the sculpture garden! Nearby, the Art Association hosts 20 annual events, including a fabulous quilt exhibit, in several galleries. Oneonta s Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center hosts a wide variety of entertainment throughout the year. Hartwick College and the State University of New York at Oneonta offer a multitude of lectures, concerts and other entertainment. The Catskill Symphony Orchestra, Oneonta, is a rare find in upstate New York, offering several premier events throughout the year. The mansion, Historic Hyde Hall, is a piece of art in-and-of-itself. Located on the northern shore of Otsego Lake, visitors can see the church steeples of on a clear day, eight miles down the lake. Fully restored with original plasters and paints, this museum features original furnishings from the early 1800s. 7 Hyde Hall OTHER FUN THINGS TO DO Glimmerglass Queen Boat Tour Empire State Carousel at represents a cross-section of mid-19th century rural American life. Learn how to bake bread over an open hearth or pet the sheep at Lippitt Farmstead. The clang of the Smithy s anvil mingles with the slide of the printing press at the Village Crossroads, where you can enjoy a game of chess at Bump Tavern or see how herbs were used to make medicines at Dr. Thralls Pharmacy. More than 40 authentic buildings, staffed by interpreters, tell the tale of days gone by. The Farmers Museum celebrates the seasons by hosting a full calendar of popular events, including Harvest Festival and Candelight Evening. Ride into history and beautiful scenery on the & Charlotte Valley Railroad. Scheduled train rides offer tours along the Susquehanna River Valley from Milford to, about nine miles. Built in 1869, the railroad was the primary transportation mode for decades. You can enjoy a unique experience in vintage cars, the sound of the whistle, and the lull of the tracks. The railroad also hosts special events, including the Easter Bunny Express, Dinner Rides, Blues Rides, Train Robberies great fun on the tracks! Mingle with butterflies and free-flying birds in the tropical setting of the Popp Butterfly Conservatory, located just north of Oneonta. 8 & Charlotte Valley Railroad COMMUNITIES Our countryside is filled with hidden gems, waiting to be discovered. The church steeples of many little hamlets dot our rural landscape, each with its own story. Oneonta is a small college town about 30 minutes south of. Bohemian, funky, renaissance are words that describe its historic downtown, a nostalgic setting for dining, shopping, and evening entertainment. The hustle and bustle of the Southside area offers a variety of national-brand shopping and dining. Oneonta History Center Cherry Valley was once the Gateway to the American Frontier. Its history includes notable events like the Cherry Valley Massacre and notable characters like Beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg. 12 GETTING HERE / LOGISTICS Trade traffic jams for homemade jams. Slow down and enjoy the fantastic scenery on the winding roads to the area. We re an hour or two from two international airports, Albany and Syracuse, respectively. The Greater Binghamton Airport is about two hours from. Train service is available on Amtrak to Rensselaer (Albany), as well as Utica. While there s taxi service to and from the airports, as well as limited limo service, it s best to get the upstate state of mind in a rental or your own vehicle. Because is a small village one stop light it s highly recommended that visitors take advantage of free peripheral parking and the trolley system ($2 per person) during the summer months. Look for the parking lot signs as you approach the village. The trolleys have regular routes and stop throughout the village, including, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum.
