YUNTA Once the focal point of local mining activities, Yunta is now the centre of surrounding pastoral interests. OLAY The correct spelling of this small settlement is probably Oolarie as an early ost Office date stamp indicates. This original name was given to a well sunk in the area in by Duffield, arold and erd, early pastoral lessees. BOKEN ILL (approx. population,) Originated in, shortly after Charles asp pegged out his first mining blocks on the lead-silver zinc lode. The town was proclaimed a city in 9 and today is a community which depends mainly on the mining industry, pastoralism and tourism. Broken ill is the centre of the West Darling astoral industry which constitutes a total area of approximately million hectares. Although the city is connected by rail to both Sydney and Adelaide, practically all of its commercial interests are with South Australia. Broken ill, and nearby Silverton, are home to many of Australia s famous bush artists. TIME ZONE Broken ill operates on South Australian time. The huge power station, fuelled by brown coal from the open cut mines at Leigh Creek, supply much of the State s power requirements. The Wadlata Outback Centre houses an accredited Visitor Information Centre and through its many displays, interprets all facets of the Flinders anges and Outback. It is located in a good wheat, sheep and cattle farming area. ETEBOOUG (approx. population,9) Originally called etersburg, the town changed its name to eterborough in 9. Initially a small farming centre, eterborough became a major rail junction and was one of the few places in the world where three different track gauges met. ION KNOB Considered the birthplace of the Australian steel industry, Iron Knob supplied ore to the Whyalla steelworks for nearly a century. Although these mines are now closed the extensive tailings deposits have become a familiar landmark for travellers along the Eyre. KIMBA (approx. population 9) The centre of a large wheat growing area, Kimba is one of the larger towns on the highway across the Eyre eninsula. MINNIA The centre of an important cereal crop growing region, the nearby Minnipa esearch Centre concentrates on seed production and dry land agriculture. There are several interesting granite outcrops in the area. CEDUNA (approx. population,) Located on the shores of Murat, Ceduna is the main business centre for the far west coast and supports a large cereal growing area. Nearby Thevenard, a deep sea port, plays an important role in the shipping of grain, salt and gypsum, and provides a home for a fleet of small fishing boats. ENONG Centre of the surrounding agricultural district. The town sits above a substantial body of underground water, which explains the number of windmill operated bores in the vicinity. TE NULLABO LAIN Meaning no trees in Latin, the Nullarbor lain extends north towards the Great Victoria Desert. The Eyre ighway skirts the southern edge of this vast wilderness, and near the Nullarbor oadhouse motorists will experience several kilometres of barren landscape. EUCLA Eucla was first established as a settlement in to enable direct telegraphic communications between Adelaide and erth. The partly visible ruins of the old telegraph station have succumbed to the drifting sands. The rolling surf of the Great Australian Bight is within walking distance. WALE WATCING Southern ight Whales congregate at the head of the Great Australian Bight to mate and calve. During whale watching season st May to st October whale watching passes are available from the Whale Watch Interpretive Centre at the ead of Bight. COOLGADIE (approx. population ) Gold was discovered in the area in 9 and the resultant gold rush saw the population reached, in 9, making Coolgardie the third largest town in WA outside of erth and Fremantle. Much of the mining activity has since moved to Kalgoorlie, ironically formerly known as East Coolgardie, but the town retains a number of impressive public buildings which bear witness to its former boon days. KALGOOLIE - BOULDE (approx. population,) When Irishman addy annan discovered gold here in 9 it sparked Australia s last major gold rush. The population surged to, and 9 hotels helped accommodate the miners and sate their thirsts.
