2 SESSION # 7 Room: Guadalajara 7 Dr. Britt Rios-Ellis Dean California State University Monterey Bay Seaside, California Mayra Rascon, MPH Research Fellow Dr. Mara Bird Director Dr. Gino Galvez Director of Evaluations Integrating Latino Cultural Capital to Catalyze Success in STEM This presentation will explore the Promotores (student peer mentorship) de STEM Program, which is grounded in the Latino Cultural Capital Model. The tenets of the model will be presented followed by a theoretical and applied explanation of the components, design, and evaluation of the Promotores program. Outcomes data demonstrate that participation in the Promotores program results in statistically significant and positive changes in GPA, as well as positive role models, among Latino STEM students.

Ricardo Torres Knight Dean of Enginnering School Dr. Ian Leslie Department Head of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering New Mexico State University Las Cruces, New Mexico Javier Gonzales Cantu Academic Mobility as a Global Phenomenon: A Double Degree in Aerospace Engineering Across Borders This work documents an international collaboration that offers a dual degree at the Bachelor s level in the field of Aerospace Engineering. Two universities located in different countries are partnering to enhance students employability through a visionary collaboration addressing the challenges related to student s mobility, curriculum development, and credits transfer. This document provides an overview of the academic program structure, student s selection process, enrollment requirements, and challenges faced by students, e.g., language barriers, uneven academic preparedness, cultural adjustment, visa issues, and financial difficulties.

Through an interactive dialogue about the needs of the 21st century workforce, this workshop will explore best practices, common challenges, and rising questions concerning implementing a strategy for capacity building that is useful across cultures.

Jesus Rojas Acting Director Institute of International Education (IIE) Mexico City Paving the Way to Success in International Education Government policy has had a dramatic impact on the internationalization of higher education in Latin America. Two examples are in Brazil and Mexico where government-led or influenced educational programs are producing a new generation of international scholars. This panel will describe how these programs are conducted in each country and the role that ETS English assessments has in ensuring the success of students in these programs.
