3 Action against Child Exploitation (ACE ) Activity Areas Miyagi Prefecture: Yamamoto Town in Watari District, and Sendai City Beneficiaries Children, adults, and the elderly affected by Great East Japan Earthquake and the persons related to support activities. Summary of Our Handling of support goods Continuing from the previous month, we sold strawberry-shaped eco-sponges in on-line shops and exhibits at some events. The eco-sponges were made by women living in temporary housing in Yamamoto Town. We collected comments from guests and customers at the events and gave feedback to the person in charge in Strawberry-shaped sponges Yamamoto Town. were sold at exhibit booths at some events. Adventist Development and Relief Agency Japan (ADRA Japan) Activity Areas Miyagi Prefecture: Yamamoto Town, Watari District Fukushima Prefecture Beneficiaries Residents in temporary housing Summary of Our Yamamoto Town, Watari District, Miyagi Prefecture ADRA Japan supported the management of the Yamamoto Town Revival Support Center by dispatching the vice-chief for the Center. We implemented Mental Health consultations with a clinical psychologist for the staff members of the Yamamoto Town Social Welfare Association and Yamamoto Town Revival Support Center (Eight consultation sessions were held). We held the "Ashiyu (foot bathing) event from September 15 to 17, 2012 in cooperation with the ROAD PROJECT of The Nippon Foundation. This was the 17th time we held this event and 76 temporary housing residents attended. We held a small concert sponsored by ADRA s in cooperation with the Nozomi (hope) Center. The center focuses on support activities for the residents of Yamamoto Town. At the comprehensive study program at Namie High School in Fukushima Prefecture, participants and UNIQLO staff members posed for a memorial picture. Fukushima Prefecture ADRA implemented comprehensive study and training programs through various club activities at Namie High 1

4 School, which is currently operating at a temporary school building in Motomiya City. We also implemented a training program in cooperation with UNIQLO in Futaba Shouyo and Tomioka High Schools, which are operating at a temporary school building on the Iwaki Myojo University campus. Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR JAPAN) Activity Areas Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima Prefecture: Areas afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear power plant accident Beneficiaries Affected people with disabilities, elderly people, and children Summary of Our AAR Japan continues to conduct Everybody, let s come together in the community to ease the stress of long term temporary housing life and to provide opportunities among residents in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefecture. We devised ways to have many people participate in activities such as massage, active listening, handcraft lessons and mini concerts. We conducted a total of seventeen sessions Mobile planetarium show in September in the three prefectures. which received high praise. Soma city, Fukushima We held planetarium shows on September 29 th (Sat) and 30 th (Sun) in Soma city, Fukushima prefecture. The mobile prefecture, 29th September, planetarium was set up in gymnastic halls and a total of ten shows were conducted. Almost five hundred children and parents came to the sites. They said, I came as I like to look at the stars and It was very good and very informative. I hope that the show will be conducted again. The shows received high praise from participants. AAR Japan distributed foot operated aspirators in Miyagi prefecture and Fukushima prefecture in preparation for future disasters. In addition, we continued to repair social welfare centers and supported exploring new sales opportunities for products produced in welfare workshops. 2

5 Association for Rengein Tanjoji International Cooperation (ARTIC) Activity Areas FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Onahama area in Iwaki City Beneficiaries People from disaster-stricken areas caused by the nuclear plant accident Summary of Our ARTIC held events on 13 separate occasions at the Onahama Salon, located in the Respo shopping center. Total monthly visitors were 687 people: 119 men, 393 women and 175 children. One of the events for example was a reading hour for children. On this occasion, Mr Tanaka, a volunteer, kindly brought along some books and read to children aged between 2 and 9. The children enjoyed the hour, enthusiastically answering Mr Tanaka's questions and singing along to his Ukulele. Many children joined the reading hour. Bridge Asia Japan Activity Areas Iwate Prefecture Beneficiaries Disaster-stricken people in Iwate Prefecture Summary of Our Lending a car to support devastated areas The BAJ continued to lend a 4-wheel-drive car at no charge to SAVE IWATAE, an NGO based in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. This car is used for the delivery of goods to disaster-stricken areas and for the transportation of volunteers and related staff members. Operation of Multi-purpose community centers in cooperation with local NGOs. Based in the multi-purpose community center constructed in cooperation with "Sansa-no-kai" in Ofunato, the BAJ performed services like delivering meals to people suffering poverty, and undertook events including "Nagashi-somen (thin Japanese noodles flowing through a small bamboo aqueduct) and flower art classes. In late August, the BAJ held a council meeting on management of Sansa-no-kai and offered support to its management. A dome used for the community space in Otsuchi town. Campaign for the Children of Palestine (CCP) Activity Areas IWATE Prefecture: Otsuchi Town Beneficiaries Children and their families in Otsuchi Town Summary of Our Otsuchi Children s Center Open on weekdays, Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Over 200 children are registered. Hired nursery teachers to take care of children after school. We planned daily programs to meet the requests of children and their parents. Had guests from Palestine who shared time their with people in Otsuchi. In front of the Otsuchi Children s Center Digital Picture exhibitions Pictures were exhibited using PCs at the town s shopping center. Made arrangements with the Otuchi local government to implement the projects above. CARE International Japan Activity Areas IWAYE Prefecture: Coastal areas including Miyako City, Yamada Town, Otsuchi Town, Kamaishi City Beneficiaries People affected by the earthquake in the above areas Summary of Our CARE International Japan carried out the following activities in September 2012 within the disaster-struck regions: Community bonds/mental health care projects Operational support for community cafés. CARE supports the operation of the Community Café sponsored by the Yamada town Social Welfare Council. The café is open every Wednesday in the temporary housing common room with the aim of preventing isolation amongst the residents. A total of 95 people participated at 4 Two soccer teams in Yamada town: FC Yamada and Rias FC soccer school received 20 futsal balls from Société

7 the town s public grounds and multipurpose spaces. Caring for Young Refugees (CYR) Activity Areas MIYAGI Prefecture: Cities of Higahimatsushima, Ishinomaki, Sendai, Kesen-numa and Taganojo FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Koriyama City, Tamura District, Adachi District, Fukushima City, Aizuwakamatsu City and Date District SAITAMA Prefecture: Kasu City Beneficiaries Infants, their guardians and persons concerning nursery care Summary of Our 1. Mid-term Plan of support activities for disaster-hit areas (continued issue) 2. Continued financial aid for personnel expenses and for improving the environment of nursery schools suffering from the disaster We held regular meetings to discuss support for disaster-hit areas We confirmed the present status for activities in progress We planned visits to disaster-hit areas We distributed textbooks and toys to nursery facilities in devastated areas We dispatched nursery school teachers and observed them for 10 days at nursery facilities in Kesen-numa City, Miyagi Prefecture. We donated 6 desk and chair sets to childcare facilities for disaster-hit and handicapped children. They are used for both learning and playing. (Hamakko Club in Aizuwamamatsu City). 5

8 Child Fund Japan Activity Areas IWATE Prefecture: Ofunato City Beneficiaries Children and people living in Ofunato and its surrounding areas Summary of Our CFJ provided financial assistance to an elementary school in Kitakami, Ofunato, so that they could organise a track and field day for children. Unfortunately the south part of Sanriku Railway system running alongside the Iwate coast line between Sakari and Kamaishi was still suffering from disruptions after the Great East Japan Earthquake. As a result buses were the only transportation available for children to get Kitakami. As many of the affected people lost their houses and jobs, parents were struggling to cover expense for their children to attend. After hearing about the financial difficulties parents were having, CFJ decided to assist by covering transportation charges for children and their supporters. Children without Borders (Kokkyo naki Kodomotachi, KnK) Activity Areas Iwate Prefecture: Coastal areas Beneficiaries Children Summary of Our Yamada town Coordinated operations for the reconstruction of Tanohama District Assemble Hall. Ofunato city Adjusted project plans for the reconstruction of 17 community centers located in the city Rikuzen-takata city Continued running the mobile Hashiru! KnK Children s Center. Attended networking conferences and events: Ofunato City action network conference, NEXT KAMAISHI, a meeting to create Kamaishi s children s play area map, Rikuzen-takata City Child Support Network Conference, and Rikuzen-takata Tsunaide(Link-up) Festival. Newly Approved activities Workshops for children affected by the earthquake. Commuting support for Kamaishi City s senior high schools that have classes in the early morning. 6 A commencement ceremony was held on September 12 for the reconstruction of the Tanohama district assemble hall in Yamada town. When completed, it will bring together people from all generations.

9 Assistance for tour expenses for the Rikuzen-takata Youth Sports Association. Foundation for International Development/Relief (FIDR) Activity Areas IWATE, MIYAGI, FUKUSHIMA Prefectures Beneficiaries General public affected by the earthquake, children Summary of Our 1. Gave junior and senior high schools in the coastal regions of Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures financial aid for equipment and travel expenses necessary for their club activities 2. Funded expenses for voluntary work carried out by junior and senior high school students in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures. 3. Helped to establish community councils and to hold local events in the temporary housing blocks in the towns of Yamada and Otsuchi. The editors worked hard to publish the second issue of the Yamada Town Paper sponsored by FIDR by 11 November. Please see the first issue on the FIDR website. 4. Supported provisions for a free bus in Yamada Town for residents who have trouble getting around town. 5. Supported the installation of new bus stops and fire extinguishers, which enhance everyday safety. 6. Carried out research to restore the tourism and marine industries and held discussions with other parties concerned in Yamada and Otsuchi. 7

Continuing the clean-up project on Kirikiri Beach. Children from Toni Children s Center had a great time during their long-awaited playtime at Kamaishi City s Cosmos Park. Habitat for Humanity Japan Activity Areas IWATE Prefecture: Ofunato MIYAGI Prefecture: Higashi-matsushima, Ishinomaki, Onagawa and surrounding areas Beneficiaries Victims whose houses were certified as completely or partially destroyed. Residents in temporary houses and communities effected by the disaster Summary of Our Habitat for humanity Japan s aim is to improve victims environment. We helped to reconstruct communities through the repair of houses and buildings. Repair and Restoration of Houses. Ofunato city, Iwate prefecture and Higashi matsushima city, Miyagi prefecture HFH Japan continued repair activities on individual houses. At the same time, we also continued to hold on-site consultations about house repair methods and financing. A fishermen s hut was constructed by the support of the HFH in Izushima, Onagawa. 8

11 Regeneration of communities. Onagawa town, Miyagi prefecture: Construction support for fisherman s huts. Higashi Matsushima city and Natori city, Miyagi prefecture: We restored community halls and built arbors in parks to provide places for people to get together. Ofunato city, Iwate prefecture: We built and set up shared store rooms and Japanese style benches at emergency temporary house sites. Volunteer activities Individual students and volunteer teams from companies from all over Japan took part in many activities. They engaged in basic construction activities such as removals, house repairs and hut and bench construction. Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA Japan) Activity Areas FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Sihchi Town, Soma District, Minami-Soma City and Fukushima City MIYAGI Prefecture: Natori City Beneficiaries People affected by the disaster in the areas mentioned above Summary of Our 1. Research activities in Shinchi Town and Minami-Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture We researched the status of present activities and future plans of the local community organizations in Shinchi Town and Minami-Soma City 2. Support activities for the sale of agricultural products in Fukushima City In order to sell them at the Global Festa held October 6-7, ICA procured and delivered agricultural products grown around Fukushima City, such as apples, grapes and pears. We did this in cooperation with organizations within Fukushima City. ICA also adjusted the project schedule to enlarge the animal house at the temporary housing area in Hakozuka-sakura in Natori City. We will open an animal therapy class in cooperation with the American medical-oriented support organization AmeriCares. 9

12 Intercommunication Center for Asia and Nippon (ICAN) Activity Areas MIYAGI and AICHI Prefectures Beneficiaries Disaster-hit children, people living in temporary housing and disaster-hit people at home in Miyagi Prefecture and those volunteering in Aichi Prefecture Summary of Our In Higashi-Matsushima City, ICAN created opportunities for about 120 households to communicate and become more acquainted with each other through tree planting events and tea meetings. The tree planting events, held in cooperation with the Higashi-Matsushima Support Center, were not only for planting trees, but they were also a chance for communication among the people involved. Students from Higashi-Matsushima City and With the cooperation of the social welfare association in Miyagi Prefecture, we provided a meeting space for about 40 high school students from Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture and Higashi-Matsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture to gather and exchange experiences and opinions. While the Nikko City talked to each other about their experiences and what they now think after one and half years since Great East Earthquake and Tsunami. students from Nikko did volunteer work separating debris, they could see what life is like for their peers living in the disaster-hit area. The students from both cities could also think of and discuss what to do in the case of future disasters. We also coordinated an opportunity for volunteers from Nagoya businesses to come and create fun items to exchange with young students in the disaster-hit areas. International Volunteer Center of Yamagata (IVY) Activity Areas MIYAGI Prefecture: Northern coastal areas in Kesen-numa and Ishinomaki Beneficiaries Nursery schools hit by the tsunami that still continue nursery activities. NPOs that seek to promote new business and social-enterprise in disaster-hit areas Summary of Our We support partial labor costs for Kesen-numa Municipal Office workers who faced difficulties as working parents who had to leave their children in someone else s care even prior to the March disaster. We also support people who evacuated to Yamagata Prefecture from Fukushima with legal welfare expenses. We would like to encourage staff members and volunteers to take extra care of themselves in order to stay healthy. Japan Asian Association and Asian Friendship Society Activity Areas MIYAGI Prefecture: Minamisanriku Town of Motoyoshi District Beneficiaries 32 spots including villages, temporary housing complexes and shelters in Minamisanriku Town Summary of Our Management of the "Minasan-kan." Minamisanriku direct sale depot. We had 3 Direct Sale Department meetings, 4 seminars for local exhibitors, and 3 trial manufacturing workshops. Regional information magazine called Sakura Tsushin Japan Association for the Refugees (JAR) Activity Areas IWATE and MIYAGI Prefectures Beneficiaries People including women, children, and foreigners who tend to be left behind by the established support system Summary of Our JAR held seven legal aid services. A total of 36 people came to get legal counseling. JAR carried out seven health consultation and aromatherapy sessions for women. JAR continued the Sakura Line 311 campaign to plant cherry trees along an approximately 170 km line in Rikuzentuka, marking the point where the tsunami reached. Reporting on its legal services at the legal symposium. JAR reported on its legal aid services at a legal symposium of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations. Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP) Activity Areas IWATE, MIYAGI, and FUKUSHIMA Prefecture Beneficiaries Focus on expectant and nursing mothers and newborns Summary of Our JOICFP gave monetary assistance, called kesho (tomorrow in Swahili), to eligible pregnant women in JOICFP carried out a program which gave a gift package to mothers in the month when their baby became one year old. In September 2012, JOICFP provided gifts to 192 mothers. The contents of the package are: Message card Picture-book Mama giving advice on how to raise their new born. A music CD Lumiere (written and sung by Hanako Oshima) 'Happy Birthday' set for a one year old baby Drawing set and book of animal illustrations 12

15 Japan International Volunteer Center(JVC) Activity Areas FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Minami Soma City MIYAGI Prefecture: Kesennuma City Beneficiaries Residents in the areas mentioned above Summary of Our Community support of Shishiori Area, Kesennuma city. JVC supported the living conditions of people in temporary accommodation or those in their own homes by encouraging community based activities. To help stop people feeling isolated, we developed a vegetable garden cultivation project with residents in temporary houses. This led to a harvest festival being organised in September. Support centers were organised at temporary houses in Minami Soma city, Fukushima prefecture. JVC operated six centers, where residents of temporary housing could relax, six days a week. In September, we visited Kobe with other local NPO members who operate the center with us to exchange opinions with people who experienced the Great Hanshin Earthquake. We were able to obtain valuable information to help us deal with problems in Minami Soma city. The antenna of Minami soma Hibari (Skylark) FM was relocated and the listening areas expanded. Disaster radio operation support in Minami Soma city. JVC continues to support the operation of Radio station Minami Soma Hibari (Skylark) FM (Minami Soma disaster FM). On September 13 th construction work for an antenna relocation was completed. As as result the listening range was extended to all areas of the city. 13

16 Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service (JOCS) Activity Areas IWATE Prefecture: Kamaishi city MIYAGI Prefecture: Sendai city, Ishinomaki city FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Fukushima city, Iwaki city and surrounding areas Beneficiaries Residents in temporary housing and victims living in their own homes in isolated villages (Mainly elderly people in Kamaishi city, Iwate prefecture, Iwaki city and Fukushima prefecture) and children in children's care centers (Fukushima city and Fukushima prefecture). Summary of Our Kamaishi region JOCS dispatched counselors to Caritas Kamaishi s Base Firia. (Emotional support clinic located at a church) and Mobile Firia at temporary housing (listening services or tea mornings). Staff training was also conducted. The seventh nurse team visited houses in these areas and the Shirahama region to take care of people in temporary housing from September 6 th to the 10 th. Sendai and Ishinomaki JOCS continues to support staff members of Tohoku parish center which runs the Tohoku parish victim support center. Fukushima city and Iwaki city JOCS supports the prevention of children's health deterioration in children s care centers in Fukushima city. Dispatched nurses and doctors to do health consultations at temporary sites twice a month. Japan Team of Young Human Power (JHP) Activity Areas MIYAGI Prefecture: Minamisanriku Beneficiaries Residents in the town of Minamisanriku Summary of Our 1. Volunteer Team Dispatch We dispatched the 48th volunteer team from Sep. 15 to 17, and the 49th team from Sep. 25 to 28. They carried out jobs assigned by the center, which included debris removal, fishery support and so on. A member of the 48th Dispatch team commented: "We had to separate the debris by hand. Everyday items such as glasses and dishes stood out amongst the rubble. It made me feel that ordinary life here had been lost in an instant. I also realized that recovery is going to be a long process, and it's going to take a lot of hard work and patience." JHP Volunteers helped the clean-up activity in the residential area, which suffered heavy damage. They worked under the scorching sun even in the middle of September. 2. Current Numbers 14

17 The number of volunteers dispatched during the period from March 2011 to September 2012 is 277 (Management level: 51, workers: 226). We ve worked a cumulative number of 1469 man-days. JEN Activity Areas Beneficiaries Summary of Our MIYAGI Prefecture: Ishinomaki and surrounding areas People affected by the disaster, entrepreneurs and fishermen who want to restart their work 1. JEN set up a meeting place to allow people in the community to talk with each other. We also supported activities and events organized by the residents association. 2. JEN supported the residents living in temporary housing in organizing the neighborhood association and implementing activities for mental health support. There was a craft workshop for making and packaging shell 3. We also helped fishermen living in Ishinomaki and accessories (earrings and surrounding areas in procuring fishing nets and tools. We received applications from 273 volunteers in September and they started helping fishermen and supporting the residents in temporary housing. Médecins du Monde Japon (Doctors of the World, Japan) Activity Areas FUKUSHIMA Prefecture: Soso area Soma city, Minami-Soma city and Futaba district Beneficiaries People displaced from their homes due to the tsunami and Nuclear Power Plant incidents Summary of Our As no psychiatric clinics were in service in the Soso area, DWJ decided to work with another NPO to establish a new psychiatric and welfare medical service. Since February 2012, DWJ have supported the NPO by sending, among other things, doctors and nurses, medical devices and welfare vehicles. RESULTS Japan Activity Areas Beneficiaries Summary of Our IWATE Prefecture: Kamaishi city and surrounding areas Temporary housing residents in Kamaishi City Continuation of on-site consultation on domestic and business reconstruction. RESULTS Japan consistently held on-site consultations at temporary house sites in Kamaishi city, in conjunction with recovery support. We held consultation sessions for residents regarding medical care, taxes, laws and other 17

20 related topics to support the first steps of recovery and reconstruction. RESULTS Japan started to hold mobile individual consultations from this month. We held health consultations with nurses, childcare consultations with nursery teachers and general consultations with residents. At the same time, we gave advice to people affected by the tsumani on the ways to reduce their personal loans. We distributed this advice as a leaflet to those who live in Kamaishi city and surrounding areas. We held a second reconstruction consultation in Kamaishi city on September 7 th. During this discussion we exchanged views with the heads of the neighborhood community association for temporary houses, city officials and representatives from NGO organizations. Victims views and opinions are carefully considered when planning reconstruction efforts. In September, SHARE helped with operations and provided first aid teams at the local fall events, in addition to our normal activities based at the Hashikami Koryu Hiroba (Hashikami Social Space) trailer house. We also carried out the following ongoing projects. Nandemo Sodan (Counseling room) There were 66 uses of the Hashikami Koryu Hiroba, including consultations about care for the elderly, support for self-governing organizations, chats over tea and event meetings. The SVA held tea ceremonies and kitting classes at the temporary facilities of Fukushinosato (the social welfare house). at Yamamoto town in Watari district SVA started operating mobile libraries that provide reading and meeting rooms. In two days there were 111 visitors and 144 books were lent out.
