The main Semex sires currently in use at Bosdale are Fever, Chelios, Sid, Windbrook and Lauthority. The Bosdale herd features the Portrait, Elise, Lustre and Shane/Tootsie families from which embryos have been exported around the world. In addition, the Bosdale herd has earned seven winning Breeder`s Herd and eight Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards at the Perth-Waterloo Holstein Show. 10h00 Fradon Holsteins 1498 Old Cheese Factory Rd., Branchton, ON (519) Those with an interest in Red & White Holsteins will appreciate a chance to visit Fradon - home to the Fradon Rudolph Jodie family of worldwide fame. In addition to farming 565 acres, Frank, Don, Jimmy & Luke Donkers currently milk cows at two farms 65 head in straw bedded tie stalls at home with a SCC of 175,000, and 75 head in a rented parlour/free stall barn with sand bedding and a SCC of 140,000. Altogether their cattle average 9500 kg milk, 4.2% fat, 3.3% protein ( ) and collectively are scored 32 Excellent, 60 Very Good, with the balance being Good Plus. In addition to the Jodies, Fradon features members of the April, Maude and Adeen families within this Master Breeder herd whose members have also earned Red & White awards and All-American and All-Canadian nominations. Semex sires such as September Storm, Talent, Goldwyn, Fever, Lauthority and Sympatico have daughters in the herd. The Donkers have embryos available for sale and have exported livestock and/or embryos to countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Denmark, South America, the United States, and more. The Donkers say, We enjoy having visitors at any time. 11h30 Smithden Holsteins th Line, Woodstock, ON Ph: (519) Smithden is a two-time Master Breeder herd known for its Smithden Allen Alison VG-88-23* family whose genetics have been marketed worldwide. Jim, Pat, Jeff and Sarah Smith run this 250 acre operation 3
4 featuring a combination free stall/tie stall barn built in 2002 and bedded with sand. In 2004 they were proud recipients of the Agricultural Award of Excellence Family Farm Award. The Smiths milk head averaging 11,691 kg milk, 3.9% fat, 3.3% protein ( ) with a SCC of 140,000. The herd is home to 13 Excellent, 56 Very Good and 31 Good Plus. The Smiths use Genomax sires for 20% of their breeding program. The main Semex bulls in use at Smithden today are Fever, Numero Uno, Sid, Brawler, Windbrook and Chelios. The aforementioned Alison has four VG-89 second calvers that are full sisters and eight sons in A.I. four in Canada, and the balance in Germany, Argentina, Italy and Australia. Embryos are available from Smithden on a regular basis. 12h30 Lunch Quehl s Diner, 33 Woodstock St. S, Tavistock, ON (519) h30 Erbcrest Holsteins 2291 Perth Line 56, Milverton, ON Ph: (519) Embryos from this Holstein herd housed in a century old tie stall barn with addition have been exported to almost every country around the world, and they have more available to sell. Erbcrest is a family farm involving Delmer & Mary Erb and Dan & Ruthann Erb and family. This Master Breeder herd has earned numerous production awards and is home to 17 Excellent, 36 Very Good, and three Good Plus-83 cows. The 42 head milking herd here averages 12,900 kg milk, 4.0% fat, 3.2% protein ( ) with a SCC of 150,000. The main cow families at Erbcrest today centre on Erbcrest Laura Shark, Dixellen Rudolph Mavis, Gen-I-Beq September Sacha, and Ralma Shottle Camouflage. Semex sires in use here include Chelios, Numero Uno, Erbcrest Satchel P, and early Genomax sires. The Erbs are humbled to be part of Semex-organized tours. 15h00 Hanalee Holsteins Line 35, Embro, ON Ph: (519) Overnight in Guelph Hank and Nancy-Lee Hazeleger and their sons Gary and Marty operate Hanalee Holsteins along with hired man Eric Ziltener and help from Gerry Hazeleger. Their farming operation consists of 325 acres cropped and 80 cows milked and housed in a tie stall barn built in the 1980s. The herd is bedded with mats plus straw and runs an SCC of 200,000. Hanalee is home to 20 Excellent, 68 Very Good and 14 Good Plus Holsteins averaging 11,500 kg milk, 4.0% fat, 3.3% protein ( ). Main cow families at Hanalee include: Hanalee Shottle Jersey, from Rudolph s maternal family; Willsona Bolton Chelsea, from the Splendors; West Port Intens Beth; Mapel Wood Shottle Lili; plus some Adeens. In addition to production awards, this herd has also yielded show winners at the 2013 Ontario Summer Show, Ontario Red & White Holstein Show, and Oxford County Holstein Show. Semex sires used in the Hanalee breeding program include Fever, Windbrook, Lauthority, Chelios, and Lavanguard, and they re using Hanalee Calgary and Hanalee Casino homebred bulls now at Semex. The Hazelegers have embryos available. In the past they ve exported to countries such as Australia, Japan, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Belgium, Holland, and France. This two-time Master Breeder Holstein herd has twice attained the highest DHI management score in Oxford County and has placed within the top 15 herds in Ontario for several years. The Pregnancy Rate (PR%) for this herd is 22-25%. This 65 head milking herd is housed in free stalls with sand bedding and realizes a SCC of 150,000. Today the Wikkerink herd is home to 13 Excellent, 30 Very Good, 25 Good Plus and 3 Good cows averaging 11,800 kg milk, 4.0% fat, 3.4% protein ( ). This herd features the family of Wikkerink Enhance Sabrina *RDC VG-11* and is home to Acmelea Windbrook Queen EX. The main Semex sires used in the Wikkerink breeding program today are Goldwyn, Brawler, Chelios, Stanleycup, Lauthority, Lavanguard and Fever. 10h00 Doanlea Holsteins Pleasant Valley Rd., Norwich, ON Ph: (519) h00 Jameston Farm Oxford Waterloo Rd., New Dundee, ON Ph: (519) With the milking herd moved into a newly constructed freestall barn on a new farm in March 2010, the Johnston family continue to raise heifers at their original dairy farm. This family operation involves James & Frances Johnston (Jameston prefix), Graham & Amanda Johnston (Gore Lane prefix), Mary Ann & Joe Dore (Gore Cottage prefix) and Claire Johnston. The new farm consists of 435 acres where they milk 60 head averaging 10,080 kg milk, 4.1% fat, 3.2% protein ( ) with a herd score of eight Excellent, 35 Very Good, and 30 Good Plus. Free stalls here are bedded with recycled manure and the herd SCC is 150,000. This herd features a Pregnancy Rate (PR%) of 55, a Conception Rate (CR%) of 33, and a Heat Detection Rate (HDR%) of 71. They utilize Bou-Matic SmartDairy Herd Metrix management software. Semex sires such as Fever, Chelios, Numero Uno, Let It Snow, Sid and Steady are used in the herd, with an estimated 20% of breedings to Genomax young sires.
