3 INDEX 2017 CONFERENCES Welcome to Green Lake Conference Center Green Lake Conference Center is a beautiful conference and leadership training center. In addition to the listings of transformational conferences for pastors, ministry leaders, youth, adults and families in this catalog, we also host retreats and conferences planned by other Christian groups and organizations, universities, schools, and nonprofit companies. We are a favorite location for family reunions and vacationers. We offer great space for groups of up to 1,000! 2 Green Lake Conference Center Our accommodations include hotel rooms and suites in Bauer, Kern and Lawson Lodges, Roger Williams Inn, and seven beautiful lakefront houses. Our mid-level choices include hotel rooms in Lone Tree Lodge and eight forest houses. Cabins and campsites offer economical choices, while students are accommodated in Robbins North and South Halls dorms and cabins with bunk beds. Our 60,000 square feet of meeting space and full dining and banquet food service provide many options to meet conference needs. There are abundant recreation opportunities available at Green Lake: boating and swimming in our beautiful spring-fed lake, golfing on two championship 18 hole golf courses (Lawsonia) and climbing Judson Tower to enjoy spectacular views. Guests can also play disc golf, hike and bike. Basketball and volleyball are available inside the recreation center; we also have outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. 7 Roger Williams Inn Restoring the lakeside experience Roger Williams Inn was originally named Lawsonia Country Club Hotel. It was constructed by the H.O. Stone Development Company of Chicago in The five story hotel was built to have almost all of its guest rooms face the lake, and it has a gorgeous lobby. Chauffeur-driven cars would bring guests around the circle to stroll into the lobby. The jewel of their development, it served as both hotel and clubhouse for the 18 hole Lawsonia Links Golf Course. When the Northern Baptists bought the Lawsonia estate in 1943, they renamed the hotel Roger Williams Inn after the English Protestant theologian. Memories abound of hymn sings in the lobby, swimming in the pool and off the island, boat rides on the Captain Bickel, and family-style dinners in the Crystal Dining Room. It was the focal point of many pictures and post cards, and the social center of the Assembly. Today Roger Williams Inn is clamoring for a new lease on life in which the original design elements that worked so well are reintroduced in a manner that works in the 21st century. We are restoring its exterior and renovating its interior so that this classic hotel will continue to be a wonderful place to inspire guests for decades to come! 8 Lakeview Meeting Room renovated and renamed Staughton Hall Lakeview Meeting Room is transforming and will be renamed Staughton Hall. Dr. William Staughton ( ) was a remarkable leader whose career included being the first corresponding secretary of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, formed in Staughton Hall will provide a modern architecturally themed concert hall with acoustical separation to Pillsbury Hall above. It will hold groups up to 400 with stunning eye-level views to the lake. LED lighting will save energy, while persons with disabilities will be better served by the elevator opening directly into the new lobby, and ADA-compliant restrooms. Phase One will be completed in May 2017 when the room is ready for use. New exterior doors and a new patio will be the focus of Phase Two. 12 Green Lake Conference Center glcc.org 13

9 QUEST 2017 A Transformational Experience for Youth Groups worship bible study challenge course Quest is a remarkable, ridiculously fun, re-imagined way for youth groups and youth leaders to experience God, encounter Christ, and grow closer as a group! June June 25-July 1 July 9-15 July them. We ll discuss some of the major issues faced by students, provide resources, and develop an environment to learn from and engage with leaders from other churches. Rethink Bible study, relinquish your fears with the low and high ropes group building sessions, and renew relationships with God through incredible worship. 16 The Green Lake Our Rich History Tea House Story No Hurry Lawsonia Country Club (1930s) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Winnebago Indians The first people to walk our grounds were Winnebago Indians. By the early 1800s as many as 500 Indians camped around Green Lake. Believing the Water Spirit lived in Green Lake, every Winnebago had to come here once in their lifetime to worship. Pioneer Settlers Chris Briswold and his family constructed a Log Cabin in the mid 1840s on an 80 acre parcel of land in a part of what is now the conference center s property. Their log cabin still stands in the back of the property, preserved as a museum and open in summer for touring. Lawson Era Victor Lawson, a printer s devil in Chicago, was the successful publisher of the Chicago Daily News. He met his eccentric wife Jessie in the church choir. They honeymooned in Green Lake. In the summer of 1888, Jessie took friends for a boat ride on Green Lake. A sudden storm caused the captain to put in on Lone Tree Point, named because of the large cottonwood tree at its end. There, huddled in a shack, Jessie decided to purchase the very spot as a refuge from the pressures and harried life of the city. Victor Lawson Before the year was over, Lawsons had purchased 10 acres, including the point, and Lone Tree Farm was begun. The Lawsons added farm to farm until the estate included more than 1,100 acres. As the primary developer, Jessie spent several million dollars building a spacious home, 12 miles of paved roads, two sets of farm buildings, a boat house, two greenhouses, a powerhouse, seven water towers, a small golf course, and homes for her workers. The Guernsey barn (1916) with its two silos is the largest historical barn in Wisconsin. Jessie maintained horses, pigs, sheep, and herds of both Guernsey and Jersey cattle. Lawson s boat, No Hurry (1905) is one of only three made by the Electric Launch Company and was operated by two electric motors powered by 140 batteries. The other two boats were sold to Thomas Edison and the Czar of Russia. It was purchased and returned to the Center in 1995 for permanent display and is in a state of ongoing restoration. Bruce Kinney Lodge (1910), a bull barn in the Lawson era, was renovated and is now used for guest housing. The Boathouse (1910) was inspired by one Jessie saw in Switzerland and the green tile on the roof came from Italy. It was built by Mrs. Lawson to accommodate their large boat and re-charge its batteries. The large water tower (1908) dominated the landscape and is now named in honor of pioneer Baptist missionaries Ann & Adoniram Judson. Its observation platform is 140 feet above the lake. Its 75,000 gallon tank was filled from a 400 foot well near the boat house. Water from the towers irrigated fields and roads with horse-drawn sprinklers. Tea House (1910), overlooking Green Lake, was originally named the Tee House for Jessie s nine-hole golf course. It is now used for meetings and picnics. One of Jessie s most expensive projects was the development of the greensward and the island off Lone Tree Point. Two summers were required to complete it. Mrs. Lawson died in 1914 and Mr. Lawson maintained the estate until his death in 1925, when it was sold by heirs to the H.O. Stone Company of Chicago. Stone Development Company The Stone Company spent another $3 million developing a luxury gated resort in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They constructed what is now Roger Williams Inn (1930) with 81 guest rooms, a dining room, bar, casino, outdoor swimming pool, and Links golf course in magnificent Scottish links style. Walter Hagen was in the first foursome to play. Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead and Vince Lombardi also played the Links. Twenty-five homes were built as well. As a result of the stock market crash in 1929 and the Great Depression which followed, buyers for more lots failed to materialize and Lawsonia went into receivership in The bank holding the mortgage operated it for about 10 years, but gas rationing during World War II and the continued stringencies of the depression forced it to close the gates and seek a buyer who would take it off their hands. Temporary WWII German POW Camp: From June until October 1944, the U.S. Government rented William Carey Barn by the front gates and some cottages as a temporary camp for German prisoners of war. Approximately 400 POWs were housed here and worked at nearby canning factories. Baptist Assembly Jessie s dream of 1888 was matched by the dream of Dr. Luther Wesley Smith. In the summer of 1943 Dr. Smith, Executive Secretary of the American Baptist Board of Education and Publication, asked David Witte, of the Wisconsin Baptist State Convention staff, about finding a place where his dream for a national conference center could come true. Witte mentioned a fabulous former estate at Green Lake. With typical fervor Dr. Smith persuaded the caretaker to let him take a look. By the end of the year he had enlisted the aid of James L. Kraft of Kraft Foods, Inc., as well as leaders of the denomination. Lawsonia, valued at $11 million, was purchased for $300,000 in December, Baptist youth held the first conference in June A dozen other conferences followed in the first season and the slogan For a Closer Walk with God was adopted. The conference center became a key meeting place for great Baptist leaders. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Green Lake July 23, His subject was Non-aggression procedures to inter-racial harmony as he began to articulate this new way to resist racial injustice in the midst of the Montgomery bus boycott. Stone Company in Designers William Langford and Theodore Moreau traveled to Scotland to sketch and photograph famous golf holes at links-style courses before laying out Lawsonia with multi-tiered greens, some 90 bunkers and deep rough. Disc Golf In disc golf players throw a flying disc (similar to a Frisbee ) into a metal basket. Scored like a traditional golf game, it is fun for all ages and requires no tee times! It s a great walk with great scenery and the only equipment needed is a disc (available at Green Lake). Walks Dawson Prairie is 54 acres of restored land. Mowed trails wind through over 100 species of native grasses and wildflowers, blooming late spring through September. Enjoy abundant wildlife including deer, birds and butterflies. Dawson Prairie Almira Dave Rene VOLUNTEERING AT GREEN LAKE Each year a dynamic summer ministry season is made possible by almost 100 volunteers. Multiple vital ministry areas are served by faithful workers, including: Transportation: drivers to pick up and return guests to airports and train stations Troster Arts Studio: assistants to help guests with ceramics and stained glass making (we will train!) Children s Center: people who care for and teach children (babies through 4th grade) Country Store and Worldwide Gifts: associates Campgrounds: Camp Ranger team serving as liaisons to campers Maintenance: floating handyman or handywoman to do light maintenance Ollie s Place: a crew to serve guests in our coffee shop Food Service: taking meal tickets and bussing tables Housing is provided. Sometimes we ask volunteers to consider alternative options in dates of service. Volunteers are asked to serve from three weeks to the entire season, mostly from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Many of our volunteers own trailers in our seasonal campsite areas (discounts may apply). Adele Monday evenings volunteers eat dinner together and hear about events and groups on grounds that week, upcoming volunteer trips and events like movie nights, potluck socials, Bible studies etc. Volunteers also have the opportunity to attend some sessions at various conferences for free. The Conference for Church Musicians, with free concerts each evening, is a special favorite! 25 An opportunity to serve as the hands and feet of Christ WORK GROUPS AT GREEN LAKE People, prayer and donations needed to make dreams a reality Work groups at Green Lake Conference Center have fulfilling, bonding experiences! Projects There are lots of opportunities to serve as the hands and feet of Christ at Green Lake! Projects are available at all skill levels and are scheduled all year. Inside and outside, all across the grounds there are buildings waiting to be updated. We always need people whose skills include carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical, painting, gardening, auto maintenance and appliance repair. We need jacks-and-jills-of-all-trades, too, and plenty of helpers. Participation Participation comes from church groups, youth groups, secular groups, family groups and also from skilled individuals who bring special gifts which provide professional assistance in key areas. The group has a regular work day of 7-8 hours with short breaks and time for lunch. An afternoon off is provided for groups that come for a week or more and work Monday-Friday. Work groups receive staff discounts at Worldwide Gifts, Troster Art Studios and the Country Store (when those locations are open). Work group participants who work 40 hours per week can enjoy a free round of golf during the time they are here. 46 Green Lake Conference Center Provision Provision for work groups includes free housing, sometimes with cooking facilities, or meals can be purchased in our dining room at reduced rates. We can host groups of up to a maximum of 50 workers, depending on the season. Youth groups are welcome with one working adult sponsor for every five youth (age 16 and above). Partnership with American Baptist Men USA We ve formed a partnership with American Baptist Men USA. Twice a year they schedule a work week with us and anyone can join in! Planned Giving is a wonderful way to include Green Lake in your estate plans. There are several ways that you can make a planned gift to Green Lake. One way is through a gift annuity. Stocks. The benefits of donating appreciated securities (either stocks or mutual funds) are tremendous. 26 Memory Lane Remember, honor and celebrate Memory Lane is a serene walkway from Roger Williams Inn to Vesper Circle. It is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places to stroll at Green Lake. Plaques can be placed along Memory Lane in memory of a spouse, other family member or friend; in honor of a church, friend, pastor, missionary, or another important person in your life; and in celebration of a special occasion like a birthday, marriage, anniversary, or retirement. Plaques along the walkway not only recognize people and events, they also help empower the ministry of Green Lake. Beyond the cost of the plaque and/or patio construction, contributions become part of our endowment fund.
