BACKGROUND ENVIRONMENT: Ceuta lies in mainland Africa and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a 7.1 square mile autonomous city of Spain, an enclave located on the north coast of North Africa. (Located just 20 km from the coast of Spain, prior to 1995 Ceuta was considered part of Cadiz Province.) Ceuta is surrounded by Morocco and separated from the Iberian Peninsula by the Strait of Gibraltar. NARRATIVE: No details INJURY: Fatal. His leg was severely bitten. TREATMENT: When the soldier was taken to hospital it was decided that his injured limb should be amputated. The operation took place the next day, but he succumbed to his injury. SPECIES: Not identified. On July 28, 1911, several sailors saw a shark off the construction

2 quay of the Northern dock. They fought it for a short time before killing it. The shark was 3.5 metres long and weighed 400 kilograms. The previous month, at the same place they killed another shark which was feared by fishermen and bathers.
