CONTINENTS AND OCEANS OCEANS Oceans are very big seas of salt water. There are five oceans. The Pacific Ocean;the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. The Arctic Ocean and the Antarctic Ocean are frozen oceans. They are at the North and South Poles. CONTINENTS The solid part of the Earth is composed of continents. There are six continents: Asia is the biggest continent. Africa is the hottest and poorest continent. America is the longest continent. Oceania is the smallest continent. 5 2. EUROPE Europe is one of the seven continents of the Earth. Europe is the second smallest continent after Oceania. It is next to Asia in the east and it is bound to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, near Africa. In Europe there are over 730 million people living there. There are different countries, some of them are: In the west: United Kingdom and Ireland. In the southwest: Spain and Portugal. In the south:italy and Greece. Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Romania are located in the east of Europe. 7 3. THE UNITED KINGDOM (U.K.) The United kingdom, UK, is a country of Europe, located in the west. It is an island because it is surrounded by the sea. The United Kingdom is composed of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The official language is English. The weather is rainy and cold. The population is around 59 million people. The currency of the UK is the pound, represented by the symbol.the UK chose not to join the Euro. Some important cities are: London and Liverpool in England (London is the capital of England). Edinburgh (the capital of Scotland), Cardiff (the capital of Wales) and Belfast (the capital of Northern Ireland). With respect to monuments, some important ones are Big Ben (in Westminster Palace) and London Bridge. They are in London. The flag is red, blue and white. Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities or regions (comunidades autónomas) and 2 autonomous cities (ciudades autónomas), Ceuta and Melilla. Each autonomous community is divided into provinces (provincias). The official language is Spanish. The weather is usually warm and sunny in the south. The population is around 46 million people. The currency of Spain is the Euro ( ), like many countries of the European Union. Some important cities are: Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.Madrid is the capital of Spain. With respect to monuments, in Spain there are very important monuments of Arabic origin. Most of them are in the autonomous community of Andalusia, for example, La Alhambra in Granada and Mezquita de Córdoba (Mosque of Cordoba). 14 5. ANDALUSIA: OUR COMMUNITY Andalusia ( Andalucía in spanish) is an autonomous community of Spain. Population: Andalusia is the most populated, as there are around 8 million people. It is also the second largest community after Castile Leon. Borders: Andalusia is bounded on the north by Extremadura and Castile- La Mancha; on the east by Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea; on the west by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean and on the south by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Provinces: Andalusia is divided into eight provinces, they are: Almeria, Granada, Jaen, Malaga, Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz and Huelva. Seville is the capital of Andalusia. Weather: the weather in Andalusia is warm and sunny. Flag: The flag is green, white and green. Main relief. We can mention 2 mountainous systems: Sierra Morena to the north of Andalusia and the Andalusian mountain range ( Cordilleras Béticas ) to the Andalusian south-east. Mulhacén is the highest peak. The valley of the Guadalquivir is among these mountain ranges. It is a huge extension of flat land and it is very fertile for cultivating different plants.with respect to rivers the most important is the river of Guadalquivir. Other rivers are: Genil, Tinto, Odiel.. Monuments: in Andalusia there are very popular monuments from Muslims, for example, The Alhambra in Granada and The Mosque of Cordoba in Cordoba. Read the paragraph below on the region of Andalucia, then answer the questions that follow: The region of Andalusia, situated in the southernmost part of Spain, is an important tourist centre, thanks to its climate, sunshine and beaches. The region has an average of 320 days of sunshine a year, making it a popular destination for visitors from all over Europe. Every year millions of tourists flock to the Costa del Sol to stay in one of the many popular beach resorts such as Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella. Many of the inhabitants of Andalusia work in agriculture, and wine production is an important activity around the area of Seville, the largest city of Andalusia, with over 700,000 inhabitants. Equally important is the cultivation of olives, which are used to make olive oil, one of the most indispensable ingredients in Spanish and Mediterranean cooking.
