2 Day 1 9 August 2018, Thursday Visiting an organic dry fruit processing enterprise (Rapunzel) Rapunzel Naturkost was founded by Joseph Wilhelm in Germany in The mission of Rapunzel Germany is to produce organic raw materials in different countries and purchase certified organically grown raw materials and products for the manufacturing of organic consumer products. Distribution to wholesalers and 5000 organic shops in Germany and other European countries is part of this implementation. The responsibilities of Rapunzel Germany include the organic certification and quality control from farm level right through until manufacturing of the final products. Rapunzel Naturkost started to import dried fruits from Turkey in Further in the 1980s Rapunzel opened an office in Izmir for consultancy in organic farming. In the year 1997 Rapunzel invested in an own organic facility in Ören/Kemalpaşa, close to Izmir. At Rapunzel Organik Tarım the main organic products (sultanas, apricots, figs and hazelnuts) are processed carefully. In Ören, Rapunzel is processing about 3000 tons of organic products per year. For many years Rapunzel has been cooperating with about 600 organic farmers in Turkey. Rapunzel is purchasing directly from these organic farmers without any intermediaries or traders in between. Sardis Sardis, also spelled Sardes, ruined capital of ancient Lydia, about 50 miles (80 km) west of present Izmir, Turkey. Strategically located on a spur at the foot of Mount Tmolus (Boz Dağ), it commanded the central plain of the Hermus Valley and was the western terminus of the Persian royal road. Sardis was the capital of the flourishing Lydian kingdom of the 7th century BCE and was the first city where gold and silver coins were minted. Taken by the Persians (c. 546 BCE), Sardis fell in turn to the Athenians, the Seleucids, and the Attalids until bequeathed to the Romans in 133 BCE. Under the Roman Empire it was the metropolitan capital and center of judicial administration of the Roman province of Lydia. Destroyed by an earthquake in 17 CE, the city was rebuilt and remained one of the great cities of Anatolia until the later Byzantine period. It was obliterated in 1402 by the Mongol Timur (Tamerlane). Its ruins include the ancient Lydian citadel and about 1,000 Lydian graves. Excavations of Sardis have uncovered more remains of the Hellenistic and Byzantine city than of the Lydian town described by the Greek historian Herodotus. In the Revelation section of the Bible, Sardes, which is said to be one of the seven churches in Western Anatolia, plays an important role in the spread of Christianity to the west.

Excavations in the 24-meter-high (78 ft) theater hill have revealed layers of settlement going back to the Bronze Age (c BC). It was founded in the 5th c. BC and flourished under the Roman Empire (1st c. BC - 4th c. AD). Mark Antony recognized the autonomy of Aphrodisias in the 1st c. BC. In the Byzantine period it was first the seat of an archbishopric, then of the metropolitan of Caria. In the 6th c. AD the name of Aphrodisias was changed to Stavropolis, the city of the Cross, to erase the pagan goddess of love from people s minds. As the capital of Caria Aphrodisias was finally called Caria which then became Geyre in Turkish. Later in the 13th century it was abandoned. The city was buried by a series of earthquakes. Aphrodisias was primarily known as a center for the arts, specifically sculpture. The Aphrodisias School of Sculpture had a distinctive style and was very well circulated throughout the Greek and Roman world. Statues with corresponding signatures were discovered from Spain to present day Germany and virtually everywhere in the Roman world. The existence of Aphrodisias was almost forgotten until a Turkish professor, Dr. Kenan Erim, of New York University received a grant from National Geographic to excavate the site in the 1960 s. His archaeological work revealed a city of vast importance. The ruins are numerous and well preserved. A two mile long Byzantine wall still surrounds the city. The Temple of Aphrodite, eventually converted to a Christian basilica, is excellently preserved. The Tetrapylon, the gate which was leading people to their great temple, was re-erected by Kenan Erim, where he s buried in front of it with a special permission of the Government after his death. The Baths of Hadrian are still partially standing. The theatre and the stadium are one of the best preserved in all eastern Mediterranean. The nearby museum contains many beautiful statues and portrait sculpture. In 2017 Aphrodisias archaeological site has entered into the List of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

5 Day 3 11 August 2018, Saturday Ephesus Ephesus, one of the most famous cities in antiquity, was founded on the harbour where the Küçük Menderes (Kaistros) River flows into the sea. Selçuk grew to be an important city because of its fertile fields well-suited to agriculture, because of its location at the center of an important commercial crossroads with connections to the East, and because it was a significant religious center both in the polytheist period and the Christian era. Many famous historical figures lived in Ephesus, such as Artemidorus, who wrote an important work on the interpretation of dreams; poets such as Kallinos and Hipponax; the physicians Soranus and Rufus; the philosopher Heracleitus the painter Parrhesius and the grammarian Zenodotos. The artifacts recently found at the huyuks (mounds) at Arvalya and Çukuriçi demonstrate that the history of Ephesus dates back to 6000 B.C. the Chalcolithic Period. It was first settled by the Hittite and Anatolien tribes, for Ephesus is mentioned in Hittite cuneiform tablets under the name of Apassas. The ancient geographers Strabo and Pausanias, the poet Kallions, and the historian Herodotus claim that Ephesus was founded by Amazons, and that the native tribes of the area were the Carians and the Lelegians. Like colonists elsewhere in the Mediterranean basin, Androklos and his men arrived in Anatolia around 1050 B.C. and settled Ephesus and its vicinity. Destroying the Temple of Artemis, the Cimmerians attacked this colony in the seventh century B.C. in 560 B.C., under the sovereignty of Lydia; the Ephesians began to inhabit the area around the Temple of Artemis. The ancient city of Ephesus whose ruins are visible today was established by Lysimachos, one of the generals of Alexander the great, in 300 B.C. The city of Ephesus moved back to the Ayasuluk Hill, where had been its earliest settlement, during the Byzantine period. The Turks conquered the city in 1304 and it became there after a part of the Ottoman territories. The city name of Ayasuluk was changed to Selçuk in 1914, and Selçuk became a city within the province of İzmir. In 2015 Ephesus has entered into the List of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
