1 World History: Societies of the Past 1. What is history? History is the story of people from the past to present. It is when people study what happened in the past related with someone or something. History is not just about the people and their culture; it is about everything and anything. For example: the weather, the environment, how the people lived, how they survived, how they find food, their houses, the animals, technology, government or the waters (river, streams, ocean etc.) History also makes us "think". It makes us think of how the world started, about their native culture, or what the weather used to be in the past. "Was the weather the same as now or did it changed?" I know it makes me think about those because I have always been curious about what happened in the past or what will the future. I think history is cool, fun to learn and study because I know that you will learn more about the world, how it became now, about the other people's lives or maybe even our ancestors. I think it is true that history is the track of our past because it s how everything got started. The most question people have ever asked is probably the past because it allows us to "think". We may wonder what had happened in the past. Studying the past allows people to see at its own image because it s where we came from. It is also true that history repeats itself because what we are doing right now will be history in the future. An example of history is the book Diary of Ann Frank. Anne Frank wrote on her diary while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi living of the Netherlands. Why is it important for us to study the past and learn about ancient civilizations? It is important for us to study the past because it can teach us how the people used their skills to survive and live. We also get to learn about who we came from, those who came before us are the people from the past. How the world came to be is an understanding of studying the events of the history. Not only our world but around the whole world with all cultures of people, including nature. People can learn better ways to deal with struggles and people by learning the causes and effects of events in history. Environmental changes from the past can increase a healthier lifestyle for everyone, also from preventing the plants and animals to die, which could upset the environment. Civilization means any type of culture, society, etc. that happened n the past. In other words, it means the people who lived before us. It is important for us to study about ancient civilizations because as they say, history repeats itself. We can learn from mistakes and successes of ancient civilization. We can learn from them and learn the differences how each and every one lived. As George Santayana said, Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it. An example of an ancient civilization is the book Discovering the Mysteries of Ancient America 3. What were the earliest civilizations? These are some of the civilizations:

3 Mesopotamia: Ancient Mesopotamia was established between the Tigris and Euphrates River. It is now in the country called Iraq. Babylon was the capital city of this civilization. They needed rules to keep peace from people living so close together. King Hammurabi made the first recorded set of laws, he ruled around 2000 BCE. They would set penalties to the people who broke the law. The law was called "The Code of Hammurabi. Ancient China: The Yellow River valley (Hwang He) is said to be the Cradle of Civilization, this is where the earliest Chinese dynasties were based. Chinese civilization then SPREAD out over a huge area and went to change the entire world. The Yellow river region of ancient China was ruled by the Shang dynasty ( BC), and is home to a growing Bronze Age civilization. The first real cities in East Asia, housing tens of thousands of inhabitants, have appeared here. Indeed, the Chinese are already making some of the finest bronzes ever produced in world history. Cultural influences from the north are bringing more advanced material culture to the Yangtze region, and this is leading to population growth. A unique, nonliterate but materially advanced culture is developing here. The Byzantine Empire/Europe: The past two and a half centuries have seen the Franks come to rule most of modern-day France and much of Germany. Their kings are active supporters of the Catholic Church and its leaders, the Popes. The Franks took place in Italy to guard a Pope against his enemies, the Lombard s. Pagan tribes is still central, eastern and northern Europe. England is now divided with a group of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, with Celtic kingdoms to their north and west.

4 Most of Spain has been defeated by the huge Muslim Caliphate. To the East, the shrunken Roman Empire (or Byzantine Empire, as it should now be called) has also been worn out by Muslim armies. Other enemies, pagan tribes from central Europe, have held most of the Balkans. The Muslim World (500AD - 750AD): The past two and a half centuries have seen the map of the Middle East change entirely. The Persian Empire disappeared under the invasion, and the Byzantine Empire lost its most provinces. In their place, the Arabs fixed a huge empire, called the "Caliphate" ("caliph" means "successor", in this case to the Prophet Muhammad). Up until now it has been ruled from Damascus, in Syria; with a change of dynasty, its capital will very soon become Baghdad, in Iraq. Where were they located? Some of the earliest civilizations were located in here: Mesopotamia is located in Southeast Asia, in the Tigris and Euphrates River. It is now in the country called Iraq.

5 Nile River Valley is located in Africa, the Nile River flows in the following countries: Kenya, Eritrea, Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. The Roman Empire is located in Rome. Rome is located in central Italy and Italy is located in the southern Europe, south-east of France, south of Germany, and borders the Mediterranean Sea in the continent of Europe. Ancient India is located in India in the Valley of Indus River. The Indus River also flows in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. India is located in south-central Asia. Ancient China is located in the Yellow River (Hwang He River) in northern China. Hellenistic civilization is located in Greece. Greece is located in Southern Europe. Minoan Civilization is located in Greek Aegean island of Crete which is now park of Greece. Aegean Civilization is located in the centre of the Peloponnese in southern Greece. The Ghana Empire or Wagadugu Empire is located in Africa. The Civilizations of Ancient Israel is located in the West Banks Territory. Mycenaean Civilization is located in Peloponnese, Southern Greece. Ancient Sumer is located in the southern part of the modern state of Iraq. 5.
