Sage Society Trip 29 August-5 September, 2010 Accompanied by Dr. Andrew Meadows Deputy Director, American Numismatic Society Turkish Gulet The Sage Society s tour for 2010, led by ANS Deputy Director Andrew Meadows, will take in some of the most important, and numismatically significant sites of the ancient Greek world. Sailing from the Turkish coast near Ephesus, the tour group will be based onboard a traditional Turkish wooden motor yacht (gulet). With all modern conveniences, including air-conditioning, these small boats are the perfect way to visit the birthplace of coinage at a relaxing, civilized pace. The tour will hop island to island from Samos to Patmos to Leros to Cos, before crossing once more to the spectacular ancient city of Knidos on the mainland. Having begun at the famous Temple of Ephesian Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the tour will end at another Wonder - the site of the famous tomb of Mausolus.

Kuşadası Following an overnight flight to Turkey we arrive and settle into our boat at the harbor of Kuşadasi. Monday, Aug 30 Day 2. Ephesos In the morning we visit the ancient city of Ephesus. Our stroll down the street of the Curetes takes in splendid monuments such as the Temple of Hadrian and the library of Celsus. Ending our visit at the theatre where St Paul was denounced, we go on to the famous Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and the museum at Selçuk. In the afternoon we sail for Greece and the lovely port of Pythagorio on Samos. In the early evening we stroll to the Logothetis fortress and the Church of the Metamorphosis.

3 Tues, Aug 31 Day 3 Samos Famed for its dessert wine, the island of Samos has a rich and varied past, notably under the 6th century BC tyrant Polykrates. We visit the main sites of Samos in the morning: the Heraion, Eupalinos tunnel, Vathy Archaeological Museum. After lunch we depart for Patmos. Revelation. Following lunch we cross to Leros. Wed, Sept 1 Day 4. Patmos In the morning we visit the fortified Monastery of St John with its immensely rich museum (including an El Greco icon). Afterwards, we will walk down to the Church of the Apocalypse which was built around the grotto where St John is said to have received the Thurs, Sept 2 Day 5. Leros In the morning we drive to the village of Platanos on Leros and the castle of the Knights of St John which towers above it, with magnificent views from Samos in the north to Kos in the south. On our way to Kos that afternoon, we aim to have lunch and a swim in a fine inlet on the east coast of Kalymnos.

4 Fri, September 3 Day 6 Kos After a night in Kos harbour, we explore the sanctuary of Asklepios and the Archaeological Museum. A visit to the Castle of the Knights may be an alternative for some. We return to Turkey via Turgutreis in the late morning, sailing on in the afternoon to the ancient city of Knidos where we moor for the night in the southern harbour. Sat, Sept 4 Day 7 Knidos and Halicarnassus In the morning we visit the remains of the Hellenistic city of Knidos, including the round temple of Aphrodite and the recently-identified hanging stoa of Sostratos. Thanks to the Turkish archaeologists, there is usually something new to see. In the afternoon we cross to Bodrum, ancient Halikarnassos, which Mausolos, a local satrap, made his capital. We visit the remains of his tomb, the Mausoleum, another of the Seven Wonders. Overnight in a bay outside Bodrum. Sun, September 5 Day 8 Return or customized extension Return flight to the United States. Guests may also opt to extend their stay either in the Bodrum area, or in Istanbul.
