1 F r o m t h e Ruins o f Pompeii t o t h e Walls o f TRoy With Columbia Professor Patricia Grieve Aboard the All-Suite, 114-Guest Corinthian II October 20 - November 2, 2008 book by May 30, 2008, to receive a free hotel stay in naples & a tour OF POMPEII
2 Col u m b i a Fa c u l t y Pat r i c i a Gr i e v e received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Princeton University, joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1989 and was appointed its Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Professor of the Humanities in Professor Grieve has explored the lives, legends and miracles of early Christian saints; she also traced the preservation throughout the world of Jewish oral poetry in epics and ballads after the expulsion from Spain. Her core work focuses on the transformation through the centuries of Middle Eastern myths and tales into the basis for religious and literary works in Western Europe. As a scholar of medieval and early modern Spain, Professor Grieve addresses the issues of tolerance from the 8 th century onwards in her latest work, The Eve of Spain: Myths of Origins in the History of Christian, Muslim and Jewish Conflict. Professor Grieve welcomes the opportunity to share her knowledge with Columbia alumni on this extraordinary voyage. (Please note that a minimum number of participants is required to confirm faculty participation.) Gue s t Le c t u r e r s He l m a Dik joined the University of Chicago faculty in 1997 as a member of the Classics Department. She earned her doctorate at the University of Amsterdam and won a prestigious fellowship at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C., before coming to Chicago. Professor Dik s primary research focus is Greek language and literature, and she especially enjoys teaching others about classical lands. As a graduate student she led trips to Greece, and she has also lectured on a highly successful alumni study trip on ancient sites in Italy. A gifted teacher, she won the 2006 Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Her most recent book, Word Order in Greek Tragic Dialogue, was published last year by Oxford University Press. Dear Columbian, We invite you to join Professor Patricia Grieve, fellow alumni, family and friends during the warm, sunny days of autumn as we explore some of the Mediterranean s most exciting and evocative ports of call. Magnificent Greek monuments, grand Roman cities, medieval villages, Byzantine and Islamic treasures and Phoenician sanctuaries abound along its shores, imbuing the Mediterranean with layer upon layer of history, culture and the legacies of great religions. We set sail from Naples bound for Sicily to explore its extensive Byzantine, Norman and Arab sites. Our exploration continues in Tunisia as we discover the Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman legacies that co-exist with current Arab Islamist traditions. We ll call upon Malta, the small independent island-stronghold of the Crusader Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, before continuing through the Aegean waters bound for Crete and Rhodes. On Rhodes we will explore Rhodes Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its medieval Crusader fortress of the Knights of St. John, followed by a visit to Lindos, site of an ancient Greek temple. From Rhodes we journey along Turkey s Asia Minor coast to ancient Sardis, a once wealthy community of Persians, Romans, Jews and Macedonian traders. Before passing through the narrow Dardanelles, the ancient Hellespont, we visit the remains of ancient Troy. Be on deck for our arrival into Istanbul, ancient Constantinople, the capital of both the Christian Byzantine and Islamic Ottoman Empires. In this awe-inspiring city, see the grand monuments of both cultures including Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and spectacular Hagia Sophia. We end our cruise in Thessaloniki, for centuries a thriving, multi-ethnic business center and now the second largest city in Greece. Our program will be enhanced by a series of lectures and discussions led by Professor Grieve and guest lecturers from our cosponsors, Brown University, Yale University and the University of Chicago. Topics will be as diverse as our cruise itinerary covering the classic world, the medieval Byzantine world and the co-existence of cultures and faiths. Please join us to discover for yourself centuries of history nestled in the inviting lands of the Mediterranean, From the Ruins of Pompeii to the Walls of Troy. Sincerely, LUXURY Ro b e rt Ne l s o n, the Robert Lehman Professor of the History of Art at Yale University, was educated at Rice University and the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, where he received his Ph.D. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1977 until he moved to Yale in He has been the recipient of many fellowships for his research on the art of Byzantium. His latest books are Hagia Sophia, : Holy Wisdom Modern Monument (2004) and Later Byzantine Painting: Art, Agency, and Appreciation (2007). For some years, he has been interested in the relationship between art and the audiences that view, study, contemplate and appreciate it. This has led to studies on medieval and modern collectors of art, the devotional and political uses of images in Byzantium and medieval understanding of vision. Lately that concern has extended to modern audiences and to how they view and appreciate medieval, especially Byzantine, art. For that reason he is eager to share his love of Byzantine art with others and to follow their responses to that past world. His current research project involves the relations of the many cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean. Susan K. Ship s Registry: Malta CST # TDI A Frank Discussion About Fuel Costs & Rates of Exchange Given the uncertain, often volatile oil market and the dollar s decline relative to the Euro and other currencies, it is extremely difficult to predict fuel costs over the long term, and, more specifically, at the time of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates and rates of exchange at the time of brochure printing (usually nine months before departure). While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge. If one is necessary, the total surcharge for your voyage will not exceed $250 per person.
