3 Dear Fellow Columbian, We invite you to join Professor Suzanne Said, fellow alumni, family, and friends from July 9-20, 2008, on a voyage of discovery in the Mediterranean. Our specially designed family itinerary will enlighten the senses and inflame the imagination of your children or grandchildren; their young minds will awaken to the wonders of Classical antiquity, visiting ancient cities and idyllic islands where myth and history are intertwined. Visit Pompeii, where children and adults alike are impressed by the timelessness of the destroyed city. See massive Mount Etna from the Greek theater in Taormina. Become enchanted by the maze of frescoes at the Minoan Palace of Knossos on Crete and discover the wild beauty of Santorini s cliffs and bay, the result of a cataclysmic volcanic eruption in 1500 b.c. Explore the island of Rhodes, whose fortified town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Europe s best-preserved medieval cities. Stand in awe at Olympia, home to the gods and site of Olympics legend. Cruise to Athens, a city capturing the best of the ancient and modern worlds. Professional youth education counselors will lead groups of similarly aged children in the Young Explorers Program, a series of educational and recreational activities developed to enhance their appreciation of the sites we visit. Children will discover how archaeologists have pieced together our past and enhanced our understanding of it. They will also have the opportunity to compete in a children s Olympiad on the grounds of the original competition in Olympia. They will stargaze on deck while hearing ancient tales about the origins of the constellations and learning how sailors navigated by the stars. Professor Said and the other expert guest lecturers will enrich our adult program with their knowledge of the ancient world. We will be joined by participants from our cosponsoring institutions Bryn Mawr College, Vanderbilt University, and The Art Institute of Chicago on this distinctive learning experience. Together grandparents, parents, and children we will learn about Greek and Roman history, literature, mythology, and culture, while walking among the ruins of these civilizations together. Capacity is limited and this exceptional voyage is certain to sell out quickly. Don t miss the opportunity to be a part of this mind-enriching Voyage to the Lands of Gods and Heroes. Sincerely, LUXURY Our programs are classified in three categories: Value, Superior and Luxury Yo u n g Ex p l o r e r s Pr o g r a m For Children Ages 7-17 Experienced youth education counselors will lead groups of similarly aged children in the Young Explorers Program, a series of educational and recreational activities designed from a child s perspective, enhancing their appreciation of the sites visited. This is the perfect opportunity to inspire young minds with the poetry of Homer, the legends of The Iliad and The Odyssey, the ideas of Socrates, and the actual feel of great architecture. Accompanied by their parents or grandparents, children will take guided shore excursions specifically created to bring alive legend and history. Or, flexibility being the key, they may also enjoy independent time to relax or explore together as a family. In addition, while adults attend lectures or enjoy free time, Young Explorers may: participate in their own archaeological excavation discover how sailors navigate by the stars visit the ship s bridge and keep a log of their journey learn about the heroes of Greek and Roman mythology produce a play in the Greek or Roman style for presentation at the end of the cruise Young Explorers in Pompeii Eric J.
