2 Dear Members and Friends, On the short stretch of coastline between the Baltic Sea and the mouth of the Seine River lies some of the world s most revered art and architecture. This tucked-away corner of Europe has experienced a prosperity disproportionate to its small size. The Netherlands and Belgium were at the center of world commerce in the 17 th century, when Europe began extensive trading with India and East Asia, and the wealth that accumulated in these countries led to what historian Simon Schama called an embarrassment of riches. In September 2015 we invite you to explore the legacy of this golden age on a leisurely cruise from Copenhagen to Rouen, exploring this region s great cultural contributions to the Western world. The Netherlands, with its storied canals and gabled houses is a rich yet socially conscious country that displays its virtues of tolerance and hospitality at every turn. Museums showcasing the celebrated Dutch masters are found virtually everywhere, from the unrivaled collection of Vermeers and Rembrandts at the Rijksmuseum, to the 200 paintings and 500 drawings of Amsterdam s most famous native son at the Van Gogh Museum, to the masterworks on display at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Continue along the North Sea to Belgium, a country often caught in the crosshairs of warfare that still managed to produce some of Europe s greatest cultural treasures. Ghent s famous altarpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb stands in the towering St. Bavo Cathedral. The fairy-tale medieval town of Bruges hosts a wealth of artistic treasures. And cosmopolitan Antwerp, home of 17 th -century artist Pieter Paul Rubens, boasts medieval lanes, a riverside fortress, and stunning Art Nouveau architecture. To round out this journey will be a visit to France s Rouen and Giverny. Stroll the verdant Maison et Jardins de Claude Monet, where the artist resided from 1883 until his death in 1926, and with landscapes that served as inspiration for many of his paintings. Robert Mode, emeritus professor of Art History at Vanderbilt, will be with you throughout the cruise and will provide lectures onboard the ship. Members of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art will be joined by members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Smithsonian, as well as alumni from Vanderbilt University and Stanford University. 3 Cruise, Learn & Be Inspired Our voyage is accompanied by experienced lecturers and expert local guides who will introduce you to the culture and history of these unforgettable lands. Through a series of lectures and informal discussions, they will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the sites we visit and help put into context the things you are seeing. The soaring spires of Canterbury Robert Mode, emeritus professor of History of Art at Vanderbilt University, has a special interest in European art and travel literature from the Renaissance to early modern times. His Fulbright year was spent in Italy, while more recently he has taught and researched the great periods of flourishing cultures across northern Europe. His publications on British and continental art deal with many major centers that travelers frequented on the Grand Tour from England to a continental constellation of cities. He has wide experience with alumni travel programs that include visits to sites such as Florence (2012) and Croatia (2014). He is familiar with the coastal sites to be visited on this voyage to Historic Cities and Art Centers of Coastal Europe and will talk about their golden ages of unique art and architecture.

4 Itinerary Sunday, September 6, 2015 USA Fly from the U.S. to Copenhagen. Monday, September 7 COPENHAGEN, Denmark EMBARK Arrive in Copenhagen and embark Corinthian. Sail in the afternoon. (D) Tuesday, September 8 KIEL CANAL Spend the day enjoying the amenities of the Corinthian as it navigates the 61-mile-long Kiel Canal, which cuts across the Jutland Peninsula and connects the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. (B, L, D) Wednesday, September 9 HARLINGEN, The Netherlands LEEUWARDEN This morning explore the old Frisian harbor town of Harlingen, whose center is a protected collection of 16 th to 18 th -century homes. Continue to nearby Leeuwarden, the former capital of the Frisian stadholders, for a visit to the Fries Museum. Housed in one of the city s finest homes, it showcases Frisian history, culture, and contemporary art. Of note is the huge collection of silver items, a local specialty. (B, L, D) Thursday, September 10 AMSTERDAM Known for its picturesque canals, Amsterdam is one of the great capitals of Europe and home to a wealth of museums. Our tour includes the famed Rijksmuseum with its unrivaled collection of Dutch Masters including Vermeer and Rembrandt. Afternoon options include a visit to the Van Gogh Museum, featuring 200 paintings and 500 drawings by Van Gogh and his contemporaries; the Anne Frank House; or time on your own to explore this walking-friendly city and its compact core laced with canals, cafes, and gabled buildings. You ll see examples of this daring ingenuity during our tour of the city, which includes a visit the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, one of the leading art collections in the Netherlands. In the afternoon visit The Hague, The Netherland s administrative capital. This city of wide, tree-lined avenues hosts the Mauritshuis, a Palladian-style mansion housing one of the finest collections of paintings, with examples of the greatest 17 th -century artists including Vermeer and Rembrandt. The Mauritshuis is the permanent home of the famed Girl with a Pearl Earring and Carel Fabritius The Goldfinch. (B, L, D) Saturday, September 12 ANTWERP, Belgium Antwerp was one of Europe s most important cities in the mid-16 th century. Tour this historic city in the morning, including the Rubens House, where Baroque artist Pieter Paul Rubens lived most of his life and which houses a number of his works. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure, or choose between visiting the Plantin-Moretus Museum (a UNESCO World Heritage site housed in a medieval building, with a beautiful courtyard garden and historic bookshop); or the Mayer van den Bergh Museum. Enjoy an excursion to Bruges, a perfectly preserved medieval town characterized by its cobbled squares, enchanting canals, charming buildings and famous local fare. Explore the town on a walking tour including a visit to the Church of Our Lady, home to a sculpture by Michelangelo. (B, L, D) Tuesday, September 15 DOVER, United Kingdom CANTERBURY From Dover, enjoy the short drive to Canterbury for a visit to the awe-inspiring cathedral, begun in the 11 th century and the seat of the Church of England. More than 1400 years of Christian history is on display here, including monuments commemorating the nation s battles, the grave of Edward the Black Prince, and the crypt, which is the only structure that survived a fire in There will be time at leisure to explore this medieval city before returning to the ship. (B, L, D) Wednesday, September 16 SEINE RIVER, France ROUEN GIVERNY Sail the storied Seine River during the early morning hours. Arrive in Rouen, the ancient capital of the Duchy of Normandy, for a tour of this historic city including the Vieux Marche, the cathedral, and St. Ouen Abbey. Enjoy a ride through the Norman countryside on our way to Giverny, Monet s home for over 40 years, for a visit to the house and gardens. We reserve the right to make alterations to the tour s itinerary and to substitute hotels, ships, or lecturers if this is required. We reserve the right to cancel, delay, or reschedule any tour prior to departure, and, so long as this is not due to any of the aforesaid causes beyond our control, the passenger shall be entitled to a full refund of all monies paid to that point if he/she so desires. No refund shall be made for any unused portion of any tour. By forwarding their deposit(s), the passenger certifies that he/she and/or their dependents, minors or others covered thereby do not have any mental, physical or other condition of disability that could create a hazard for them or other passengers. We reserve the right to decline to accept or to decline to retain any person as a member of any tour should such person s health, condition or actions adversely affect or threaten the welfare or safety of other passengers or impede the tour. Baggage or valuables brought on the tour shall be transported, handled or stored at the passenger s risk entirely, and, we shall bear no liability or responsibility for any damage or other loss thereto. Passenger tickets are not transferable and are not subject to alteration by the passenger. No suit shall be maintainable against the carrier, or vessel, for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passengers, unless written notice of the claim, with full particulars, is delivered to the carrier or its agents at its office at the port of sailing or at the port of termination within six months from the day when such incident occurred. In no event shall any such suit or any claim against the carrier or vessel for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger be maintainable unless such suit is commenced within one year from the day when the incident causing such losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger occurs, notwithstanding any provision of law of any state or country to the contrary. Resolution of any disputes arising hereunder shall be brought within the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, pursuant to the applicable general maritime law, and applying the applicable general maritime law and Federal maritime statutes. Rates: Tour costs are based upon current airfares, tariffs, and currency values. While we do everything possible to maintain the listed prices, they are subject to change.
