2 about public enum CONTENT Green Hackathon is a series of events where hackers & developers meet to create and apply new ideas, targeting a sustainable and healthier future. One of the main goals of a Green Hackathon is to showcase the potential of Open Data and APIs that make access to environmental, agricultural and biodiversity data easier. The Athens Green Hackathon will last for 3 days. The innovative approach that the Athens event brings to the table is based on the Brainstorm-Hack-Present approach. On Friday (14/12), the participants will engage in creative Brainstorming exercises that will allow them to connect with the object of their hacking, that is the environmental education and research. On Saturday (15/12), the main hacking event will take place from early morning to late at night whereas on Sunday (16/12) the hacks will be presented and awards will be given by an expert panel. 6 System.out.println Stefan Dietze is a senior researcher and research group leader at the L3S Research Center of the Leibniz University Hannover (Germany). He holds a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in Applied Computer Science from Potsdam University and previously held research positions at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMI) of The Open University (UK) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (Berlin, Germany). His main research interests are in Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies and their application to Web data integration problems in domains such as education or Web archiving. Stefan currently is coordinator of the EU-funded project LinkedUp ( and he has been involved in leading roles in numerous EU R&D projects, such as LUISA, NoTube, ARCOMEM or meducator. Furthermore, he is founder of the Linked Learning workshop series and of the community platform Stefan s work has been published throughout major conferences and journals in areas such as Semantic Web, Linked Data, Services-oriented Systems and Technology-enhanced Learning and he is reviewer, organiser and committee member for numerous scientific events and publications. Sofoklis Sotiriou BRAINSTORMING SPEAKERS Stefan Dietze Sofoklis Sotiriou has worked at CERN, at the National Center for Scientific Research DEMOKRITOS in Athens and in the Physics Laboratory of Athens University. He holds a PhD in Astrophysics and a PhD in Technology Enhanced Science Education. He is the Head of R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi, the first research department that operates in the school environment in Greece, where has been active in the co-ordination and development of research projects on implementation of advanced technologies (e.g. mobile applications, wearable computers, VR and AR applications, robotics) in science education and training. Since 2001 he is the Director of the Ellinogermaniki Agogi Center for Science Teachers Training. His main research field is the design, application, and evaluation of virtual and digital media environments that could bridge the gap between formal and informal science learning. Johannes Keizer is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. For the last 10 years he is leading the AIMS team. ( Agricultural Information Management Standards and Services). The AIMS team takes care of the multilingual agricultural concept scheme AGROVOC, facilitates AGRIS ( the International Information Systems for Agricultural Science and Technology ) and works together with GFAR (Global Forum on Agricultural Research) on the CIARD RING ( Roadmap to Information Nodes and Gateways ). The AIMS website ( has become one of the most important access points for standards, tools and advice in agricultural information management. Johannes has a master degree in biochemistry and biophysics and a PhD in Biology. Before turning his interest to the management of scientific data he worked as a research fellow on eco-toxicological aspects of organo-phosphorous pesticides. He is member of the Dublin Core Advisory Board. He lives in Rome and Berlin. Theodoros Anagnostopoulos Johannes Keizer Theodoros Anagnostopoulos is a Genetics from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Masters in Human Reproductive Biology from Imperial College and a PhD in Medical Genetics from Kings College London. His Post-Doctoral Research work at the National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos in Greece was on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. He is an Onassis and Embirikion Foundation scholar and has received a Young Scientist Award by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Kyoto, Japan. He is the Co-Founder and Director of SciCo (Science Communication - a Non Governmental Organization whose aim is to communicate scientific issues to the public in a clear and entertaining way. He is also the Co-Founder and Secretary General of Green Project ( another NGO whose aim is to create environmental awareness via science and art. Stefanos Kozanis is a research associate working mainly as software developer at the Department of Water Resources, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is the principal maintainer of Hydrognomon, Enhydris, filotis and openmeteo. org and he participates in several projects of the ITIA research team. His interests in software development are on scientific computing and on special web services such as web GIS. He is currently experimenting with open GIS technologies and is trying to introduce GeoDjango, PostGIS and OpenLayers in his projects. Much of my spare time is devoted to music. He is a classical trained pianist and currently studying jazz piano at the Athenaeum Conservatory. Stefanos Kozanis 8 9

7 Spiros Athanasiou is a Research Associate at the Institute for the Management of Information Systems / Athena Research Center. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from NTUA, and has since been working an architect, developer, and project manager for numerous R&D projects for the public and private sector. His research interests include geospatial data management, spatial data infrastructures, and open data applications, with special emphasis on democratizing geospatial knowledge and establishing the technical foundations of the EU data economy. He is leading the design and development of geodata.gov.gr, the first open data portal in Greece. He is an active supporter of open source and open data, a member of OSGeo and regularly organizes and participates in open events to motivate citizens towards open knowledge and participatory technologies. He has served as a volunteer in the PMs egovernment Team working on open geospatial data issues, and has co-authored Law 3882/2010 which provides the legal foundation for open, interoperable geospatial data in Greece. Spiros Athanasiou System.out.println INDICATIVE DATASETS & APIS For the Hackathon several Datasets & APIs will be proposed to you: Dimitris Kitsikopoulos Dimitris Kitsikopoulos (34), studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering (BSc, MSc) and worked for 7 years in the industrial and commercial sector. Dimitris is a sea buckthorn (Hippophae) farmer. Since seabuckthorn is a new crop in Greece, he faced serious problems on accessing information relevant to the crop. One year ago he introduced a web site called Ippofaesplus.com in order to come in contact with other sea buckthorn farmers and specialists (both in Greece and abroad). Through his initiative, he was able to share and harvest valuable information. He claims that if Greek farmers start to exchange information about their problems and their ideas, an authentic cooperation will be created. That level-1-cooperation can serve as a basis for several collective initiatives. He invites the Greek farmers to an Open Agri-Culture. A new Culture in the Greek agricultural sector, that faces Sharing as a powerful tool.
