2 Characteristics of the County and the Road Network Fond du Lac County is a metropolitan county of about 102,000 located in the Fox River Valley and synonymous with the Fond du Lac Metropolitan Statistical Area. Besides containing the southern shore of Lake Winnebago, Fond du Lac County also has 33 other lakes, the largest of which include the Eldorado Marsh, Long Lake and Kettle Moraine Lake. Interstate 41 crosses through Fond du Lac County from south to north, entering the county through the town of Byron, through both Fond du Lac City and North Fond du Lac, and exiting through the Town of Eldorado. I-41 carries traffic through the county between Milwaukee and Green Bay via Oshkosh, Appleton and Neenah. USH 41 runs completely concurrent with I-41 within Fond du Lac County limits. USH 45 is a two-lane highway that travels southeast-to-north, entering through Auburn, and traveling through Eden and Fond du Lac before exiting the county running along the western coast of Lake Winnebago. USH 151 is a divided, multi-lane highway running southwest-to-northeast travelling from Waupun to Fond du Lac, and then running along the eastern coast of Lake Winnebago. STH 26 runs south to north, starting in the City of Waupun, travelling through Rosendale and exiting in the Town of Eldorado. STH 26 is a secondary corridor carrying traffic between Dodge County and Oshkosh. STH 49 also runs south-to north in the western part of the county, entering through Waupun, and travelling through Brandon and Metomen and entering the City of Ripon, before veering west into Green Lake County. STH 23 runs west to east, travelling through Ripon to Rosendale and then through Fond du Lac before travelling eastward into Sheboygan County through the Town of Forest. There are 1,789 miles of roads in the county, of which 202 (11.3%) are state roads, 384 (21.5%) are county roads, and 1,203 (67.2%) are local roads. In 2015, there were 40,446 autos, 7,480 cycles, 9,049 trailers, and 54,022 trucks registered in Fond du Lac County. Vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2015 was 1,124,323,370. 2
3 Municipalities Fond du Lac County has four municipalities with a population greater than 5,000 people. They are the Cities of Waupun, Fond du Lac and Ripon, and the Village of North Fond du Lac, with the City of Fond du Lac having about four times the population of the next largest municipality, the City of Waupun. Together, these municipalities make up 62% of the county s population. The following table includes 2015 population estimates for the municipalities within the county. The closest level I or level II trauma center is the ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah, which is approximately 37 miles from the City of Fond du Lac, the county seat of Fond du Lac County, located in the north central section of the County. The Children s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, at approximately 60 miles from Fond du Lac, is the closest pediatric level I or level II trauma center.
