2 Marseilles MARSEILLE DISCOVERY & TASTE MARSEILLE DISCOVERY & TASTE The Church of Saint Laurent and the view of the Old Port La Major Cathedral and Esplanade Museum Complex Panier quarter, La Vieille Charité courtyard and loggia We begin our discovery tour of Marseille by taking the shuttle bus from the port to the Church of Saint-Laurent. The little square in front of the church offers beautiful views of the Old Port and the hills surrounding the city. We make our way downhill from the church towards Marseille's Neo-Byzantine cathedral, known locally as La Major. After a tour around the outside of the building, we have a short stop in the new Esplanade, recently completed to coincide with Marseille's nomination as the "European capital of culture 2013". We then make our way to the new museum complex, which comprises three institutions: the Musée Regards de Provence, the Ville Méditerranée and MuCEM the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations. Our guide will provide an overview of each building from the outside. We walk onwards, heading into the old heart of the city, the Panier quarter, with its artisan workshops and colourful, bustling cafés. Before we make our way into the web of narrow streets of the old town, we stop to visit the courtyard and the loggia of La Vieille Charité, a building that originally served as an almshouse for the city's poor, but which is now home to a cultural centre and a venue for temporary exhibitions. We then take another short break to sample the famous panissa, a sort of cake made with just a few humble ingredients: chickpea flour, water and salt. We make our way back to the Old Port, where we can either board the ship straight away, or spend a couple of hours of fee time in the city centre. Space is limited, so please reserve early. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of visits may vary. 00GN 4 Hours approximately Moderate EUR EUR PAGE 2

We stop at the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau, which combines the joy of a stroll with the discovery of the bird species living in the region such as graceful flamingoes, once on the brink of extinction, herons, egrets and storks. We walk along paths, footbridges and walkways on a guided tour of the park, which covers 60 hectares of unspoilt nature where flora and fauna coexist in harmony in their natural habitat.after the visit, we leave the park and head towards the capital of Camargue, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer*, a small fishing village with white houses dominated by a relaxed evocative atmosphere. Palace of the Popes Free time for shopping and exploring the city We leave the port of Marseille by coach, and head for Avignon, a journey that takes about one hour. The city of Avignon is famous for having been the seat of the Papacy from 1309 to 1377, a period known as the Avignon captivity. Pope Clement V transferred the Papal court from Rome to Avignon, from where 7 Popes reigned until 1377 and 2 antipopes stayed on almost until the end of the 14th century, bringing a period of prominence and prosperity to the city. Our tour takes us to the Palace of the Popes which has been recognised in France as a historic monument since 1840, and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since The building, which is both a palace and a fortress, is one of the most extraordinary examples of Gothic architecture of the 14th century. It was built in two phases, by two popes: to the north, the more austere Palais Vieux (Old Palace) was built during the reign of Benedict XII; the Palais Neuf (New Palace), to the south, was built by his successor, Clement VI. Inside, the now-empty galleries, chambers and chapels give an apparent impression of austerity. The frescoes and handwoven tapestries in the bedrooms and the Papal study however, give a better idea of the pomp and splendour of times gone by. Before going back to the ship, we have some free time for a walk in the streets of the centre or for shopping. This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems. PAGE 7

9 We leave from the left-hand side of the port and begin our tour of Marseille with a visit to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Garde which is at the highest point of the city at an altitude of 162 m above sea level, from where we can see the whole of Marseille laid out before us. We will then make our way to the Church of Saint-Laurent, a handsome example of Provençal Romanesque architecture, built in pink stone from Couronne, with splendid views of the Old Port. It also marks the beginning of the quarter known as Le Panier ("the basket"), which is one of the oldest quarters of Marseille and the old heart of the city. It owes its name to the Le Logis du Panier inn, an old establishment dating back to the 17th century. This part of the city is a typical Mediterranean port neighbourhood with the fronts of houses painted in a variety of colours and narrow winding streets. Historically a favoured haunt of sailors, it is now one of Marseille's most characteristic areas. Following a visit to La Vieille Charité originally an almshouse for the city's poor, now home to a cultural centre and a venue for temporary exhibitions we have the opportunity to try a local speciality, the navette (little boat), a traditional biscuit flavoured with orange blossoms that is baked in the shape of a boat. After a short break, close to La Vieille Charité, we pay a short visit to the Neo-Byzantine Cathedral of Saint-Marie-Majeure also known by the locals as La Major before heading back to the port. After crossing the French border, we will arrive in the Principality of Monaco, one of the smallest independent states in the world, its origins and history are indelibly linked to the Grimaldi family, who have ruled here for over 700 years. More specifically, Prince Rainier III who reigned from 1949 to 2005, strongly supported the development of the Principality. Owing to his fairy-tale marriage to the American actress Grace Kelly and the numerous initiatives he supported, the Rainier lineage made this tiny State one of the most frequented by international jet-setters, turning it into a place where numerous world events are held, some of which, delightfully for charity. Our tour begins with Monaco Ville, the ancient city, which expands over a rock fortified in a very appealing position overlooking the sea. Here, we will have the opportunity to admire the Royal Palace square and, dependent on the arrival time, we may witness the changing of the guard. The excursion will lead us to the small Cathedral, the final resting place of both Prince Rainier and his beloved wife, Princess Grace, who was tragically killed in a car accident that is still shrouded in mystery. 15 Cathedral of San Paragorio We leave the port by coach, in the company of our tour rep, and make our way to the first stop on our journey, Finalborgo, which is considered one of the most attractive townships in the whole of Italy. The settlement is undoubtedly medieval in origin, although recent research suggests that it was founded several centuries earlier than was previously believed. As we stroll through the streets of the old town, the imposing defensive mass of Castel San Giovanni and other notable monuments such as the Basilica of San Biagio, the Convent of Santa Caterina and numerous Renaissance palazzi conjure an almost palpable sense of history. We leave Finalborgo for another of the Italian Riviera s Medieval gems: the town of Noli. This gracious little settlement was home to skilled merchants and courageous navigators who saw it become an independent maritime republic. We explore the historic centre on foot, admiring the buildings that recount this fascinating history. There are the Torre del Canto and the Torre del Comune, two of the seventy-two towers of Noli, of which but a few remain. Tarragona, panoramic tour Portal del Roser, old walls, Plaça de la Font Santa Maria Cathedral Roman circus, amphitheatre Tarragona, the main port in southern Catalonia, is an ancient Roman city with fascinating remnants of a glorious past. Its archaeological complex has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will begin our visit with a panoramic tour with glorious views of the Mediterranean. We will then arrive at the ancient city gates, the Portal del Roser, from where we can admire the most ancient Roman construction in Spain, the walls of the Roman city of Tarraco. Built in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the walls are still an imposing sight with all the authority of their height (6 metres) and thickness (over 4 metres). To give us an idea of what Tarragona was like in ancient times, we take a look at the detailed scale model of Roman Tarraco, showing the city at the height of its splendour in the 2nd century AD. We will continue our visit of the city, strolling along its streets and admiring the beautiful Plaça de la Font. We will arrive at Santa Maria Cathedral (visit of the exterior) on a site previously occupied by a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter and a Muslim mosque. This beautiful church blends Romanesque and Baroque styles and its large rose window is often compared to those of much more famous churches such as Notre Dame in Paris. The visit continues with the Roman circus (visit of the interior), one of the most significant archaeological sites in the city, created in around the 1st century AD on the orders of the emperor Domitian. Used for chariot racing in ancient times, it measures 325 by 115 metres and is estimated to have a capacity of over 30,000 spectators. The Tarragona Circus is one of the best preserved in the Western world, despite the fact that the structure continues to be hidden beneath old 18th century PAGE 18

At the centre of the Amphitheatre we find the remains of the plan of a Visigoth basilica, built to commemorate the sacrifice of Saint Fructuosus and his deacons. At the end of the visit we will enjoy some free time to admire the magnificent view of the Mediterranean. We recommend that you book early because only a limited number of places are available. The austere spirit of this congregation led to the creation of a style during the transition period between Romanesque and Gothic. We will leave Tarragona by coach and head towards the interior through villages, mountains and the valley of the river Francolí. We will arrive at Espluga de Francolí where we will visit the Monastery of Santa María de Poblet, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by a beautiful wood, it is the largest inhabited Cistercian monastery in Europe. It was founded in 1151 thanks to a generous donation from the Count of Barcelona Ramón Berenguer IV and played an important role in the PAGE 19

20 life of the village, contributing towards its numerous estates, its recolonisation and the cultivation of the lands recently reconquered from the Muslims. It features a church (with various royal tombs) and a primitive cloister (12th-14th century), surrounded by various rooms and buildings from various eras up to the 18th century including the Abbot's Palace, the chapels of Sant Jordi and Santa Caterina, the Royal Palace, the ancient cloister of Sant Esteve and the new sacristy. The monastery enjoyed the special protection of the Catalan kings until the early 19th century when the monks were forced to leave due to the laws of ecclesiastical condemnation. The monastery then fell into a state of abandonment until 1940 when it was reopened for worship and underwent a restoration project to return it to its former splendour. At the end of this enjoyable monastery visit we will get back on the coach and head for the enchanting medieval village of Montblanc. The village with its impressive walls, 1.7 km long and one of the best-preserved examples in Catalonia, maintains the medieval atmosphere of a place that was once the residence of kings and knights. Montblanc was at the height of its splendour during the reign of James the Conqueror. From the church of Sant Francesc outside the walls, we will arrive at Saint George's Gate where, according to legend, Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia, killed the dragon. Within the walls the guide will introduce us to the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel, the Royal Palace, Plaça Major and the church of Santa María la Mayor in Gothic style with a Baroque façade (visit of the exterior). During the visit to Montblanc we will admire the lifestyle of the locals, the traditional shops and the relaxing, peaceful atmosphere of the streets of this extraordinary ducal village. Our destination is the Adernats Vinícola de Nulles winery, which was established at the start of the nineteenth century when, following a phylloxera infestation, a number of small local producers decided to form a cooperative and set up a community winery. We will be able to stroll through the vineyards and learn the fascinating details of how the grapes from which the company produces prized examples of cava, Spain s answer to champagne are planted and cultivated. Our visit continues inside the splendid winery, one of the so-called cathedrals of wine that dot the Catalonia countryside. It is a striking building in the Modernist style that was designed by César Martinell, one of the movement s leading exponents and a follower of the great Antoni Gaudí. Awaiting us at the end of our visit is a mouth-watering wine-tasting session, where we will be sampling two of the company s most prestigious labels and snacking on some local specialities. On our return to the port, we enjoy a panoramic tour of the centre of Tarragona, where we discover fascinating reminders of the ancient city s glorious Roman past. Panoramic tour of the coast Salou Relaxing at the beach We set off from Tarragona for a pleasant panoramic tour of the coastal region south of the city. In just 20 short minutes, we arrive at our destination, Salou, one of the Costa Dorada s most highly rated seafront resorts. With a seafront stretching 14 km, Salou offers a range of beautiful, broad beaches, but also small, intimate coves. The infrastructure is impressive throughout and the beaches boast modern facilities and services to meet any requirement. The beaches at Salou have been awarded some 34 European Blue Flags, a guarantee of clean water, well-maintained sands and a commitment to environmental responsibility. During our time at Salou, we are free to enjoy the splendid beaches as we choose, swimming, soaking up the sun and relaxing. The seafront also offers plenty of shops, restaurants and bars in case you feel the need for some shopping or a tasty snack. 01QR 4 Hours approximately Easy EUR EUR Water Activity Tarragona FREE TIME AT THE BEACH AT CAMBRILS An excursion for those who love the peace and convenience of a large, fully-serviced sandy beach where you can enjoy the wonderful waters of the Mediterranean. Reus Guided tour of the old town Gaudí Centre (optional) Cambrils Free time for relaxing and walking We leave the port for a brief panoramic tour of the interior on our way to the picturesque city of Reus, the administrative centre of the comarca of Baix Camp and the second largest city in the Province of Tarragona. Known as a centre of business, including the production of brandy, for which it is especially well regarded, Reus is also the city where the celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí was born, and the presence of this famous son and the legacy of his work can still be felt today. A guided tour of the historic city centre yields many an impressive Modernist scene, a fact we owe less to the direct activities of Gaudí than to his influence on architects of the calibre of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Pere Caselles and Joan Rubió who designed some of the architectural jewels that adorn the city today. PAGE 23

24 At the end of our guided tour, we have some free time to explore the hidden corners of Reus on our own, do a little shopping or even visit the Gaudí Centre where we can learn more about the life and work of the great Catalan architect. Waving goodbye to beautiful Reus, we head along the coast to the seaside town of Cambrils, one of southern Spain s finest bathing destinations. Here, we have some more free time to relax and enjoy the charms of this cheerful seaside borough, either by taking a walk along the seafront past restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops, or lying on the beach, cool drink in hand, and profiting from the Spanish sun to work on our tans. 01QT 4 1/2 Hours approximately Moderate EUR EUR Sightseeing Cultural Tarragona DISCOVERING TARRAGONA ON FOOT A chance to explore Tarragona, walking among the remnants of a glorious past that stretches back to the Roman era, and drinking in the fascinating history of a city where every street corner has a story to tell. Tarragona Balcó del Mediterrani City walls and the Portal del Roser Model of the Roman city of Tarraco Cathedral of Santa Maria Roman circus Roman amphitheatre Our excursion begins with a panoramic tour of Tarragona, the main port in southern Catalonia and site of an ancient Roman city that preserves fascinating remnants of its glorious past that have earned it the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our route takes us close to the famous Balcó del Mediterrani or Balcony of the Mediterranean a unique belvedere that PAGE 24

25 offers privileged views of the Mare Nostrum. We then come to the city s ancient gateway, the Portal del Roser, where we can admire the oldest Roman construction in the whole of Spain, the city walls of the old city of Tarraco, which at six metres in height and over four metres thick, still exert all of their timeless authority. To give us an idea of what Tarragona was like in ancient times, we take a look at the detailed scale model of Roman Tarraco, which shows the city at the height of its splendour in the 2nd century AD. Our tour of the city continues as we explore the streets on foot, and admire the handsome Plaça de la Font with the seat of the city council sitting proudly at one end and the open-air tables of the cafés spilling on to the square. We finally come to the Cathedral of Santa Maria (visit of the exterior), which occupies a space that once housed a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter, and a mosque. The tour continues on to, and inside, one of the most important archaeological sites in the city, the Roman circus, which was built for biga and quadriga chariot racing some time around the first century AD. Our itinerary then leads to the Amphitheatre (visit of the exterior), an early-second-century structure built for important sacrifices and gladiatorial contests. At the centre of the Amphitheatre we find traces of the floor plan of a Visigoth basilica built to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Fructuosus and his deacons. At the end of the tour, we make our way back to the Balcó del Mediterrani to admire the splendid view and enjoy some time to ourselves. 01QU 4 Hours approximately Hard EUR EUR Sightseeing Cultural Tarragona PORTAVENTURA & FERRARI LAND A unique day all together in one of the most famous amusement parks in Europe...
