4 Tarragona VISIT TO THE ADERNATS WINERY AND PANORAMIC TOUR OF TARRAGONA We set off in search of one of Catalonia s most iconic products, its wine, visiting an establishment that is in equal parts famous winery and a celebration of the great Catalonian artistic movement of Modernism. We end our excursion with a heady wine-tasting session and a panoramic tour of Tarragona. Panoramic tour of the Catalonian hinterland Nulles Adernats Winery Vinícola de Nulles Tour of the vineyards and the Modernist winery Wine tasting with refreshments Panoramic tour of Tarragona and photo stop We leave Tarragona by coach, heading inland for a panoramic tour of the hinterland that leads us through handsome villages, mountainous terrain and the valley of the Francolí River to the village of Nulles, which sits in the heart of a famous winemaking district. Our destination is the Adernats Vinícola de Nulles winery, which was established at the start of the nineteenth century when, following a phylloxera infestation, a number of small local producers decided to form a cooperative and set up a community winery. We will be able to stroll through the vineyards and learn the fascinating details of how the grapes from which the company produces prized examples of cava, Spain s answer to champagne are planted and cultivated. Our visit continues inside the splendid winery, one of the so-called cathedrals of wine that dot the Catalonia countryside. It is a striking building in the Modernist style that was designed by César Martinell, one of the movement s leading exponents and a follower of the great Antoni Gaudí. Awaiting us at the end of our visit is a mouth-watering wine-tasting session, where we will be sampling two of the company s most prestigious labels and snacking on some local specialities. On our return to the port, we enjoy a panoramic tour of the centre of Tarragona, where we discover fascinating reminders of the ancient city s glorious Roman past. If time allows, we will also make a brief photo stop before boarding the ship. PAGE 4

With a seafront stretching 14 km, Salou offers a range of beautiful, broad beaches, but also small, intimate coves. 7 centre of the comarca of Baix Camp and the second largest city in the Province of Tarragona. Known as a centre of business, including the production of brandy, for which it is especially well regarded, Reus is also the city where the celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí was born, and the presence of this famous son and the legacy of his work can still be felt today. A guided tour of the historic city centre yields many an impressive Modernist scene, a fact we owe less to the direct activities of Gaudí than to his influence on architects of the calibre of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Pere Caselles and Joan Rubió who designed some of the architectural jewels that adorn the city today. At the end of our guided tour, we have some free time to explore the hidden corners of Reus on our own, do a little shopping or even visit the Gaudí Centre where we can learn more about the life and work of the great Catalan architect. Waving goodbye to beautiful Reus, we head along the coast to the seaside town of Cambrils, one of southern Spain s finest bathing destinations. Here, we have some more free time to relax and enjoy the charms of this cheerful seaside borough, either by taking a walk along the seafront past restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops, or lying on the beach, cool drink in hand, and profiting from the Spanish sun to work on our tans. 01QT 4 1/2 Hours approximately Moderate EUR EUR Sightseeing Cultural Tarragona DISCOVERING TARRAGONA ON FOOT A chance to explore Tarragona, walking among the remnants of a glorious past that stretches back to the Roman era, and drinking in the fascinating history of a city where every street corner has a story to tell. Tarragona Balcó del Mediterrani City walls and the Portal del Roser Model of the Roman city of Tarraco Cathedral of Santa Maria PAGE 7

8 Roman circus Roman amphitheatre Our excursion begins with a panoramic tour of Tarragona, the main port in southern Catalonia and site of an ancient Roman city that preserves fascinating remnants of its glorious past that have earned it the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our route takes us close to the famous Balcó del Mediterrani or Balcony of the Mediterranean a unique belvedere that offers privileged views of the Mare Nostrum. We then come to the city s ancient gateway, the Portal del Roser, where we can admire the oldest Roman construction in the whole of Spain, the city walls of the old city of Tarraco, which at six metres in height and over four metres thick, still exert all of their timeless authority. To give us an idea of what Tarragona was like in ancient times, we take a look at the detailed scale model of Roman Tarraco, which shows the city at the height of its splendour in the 2nd century AD. Our tour of the city continues as we explore the streets on foot, and admire the handsome Plaça de la Font with the seat of the city council sitting proudly at one end and the open-air tables of the cafés spilling on to the square. We finally come to the Cathedral of Santa Maria (visit of the exterior), which occupies a space that once housed a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter, and a mosque. The tour continues on to, and inside, one of the most important archaeological sites in the city, the Roman circus, which was built for biga and quadriga chariot racing some time around the first century AD. Our itinerary then leads to the Amphitheatre (visit of the exterior), an early-second-century structure built for important sacrifices and gladiatorial contests. At the centre of the Amphitheatre we find traces of the floor plan of a Visigoth basilica built to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Fructuosus and his deacons. At the end of the tour, we make our way back to the Balcó del Mediterrani to admire the splendid view and enjoy some time to ourselves. 01QU 4 Hours approximately Hard EUR EUR Sightseeing Cultural Tarragona THE ANCIENT ROMAN CITY OF TARRAGONA PAGE 8

9 An unmissable visit to magnificent Tarragona, the pearl of the Costa Dorada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a glorious past. Tarragona, panoramic tour Portal del Roser, old walls, Plaça de la Font Santa Maria Cathedral Roman circus, amphitheatre Tarragona, the main port in southern Catalonia, is an ancient Roman city with fascinating remnants of a glorious past. Its archaeological complex has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will begin our visit with a panoramic tour with glorious views of the Mediterranean. We will then arrive at the ancient city gates, the Portal del Roser, from where we can admire the most ancient Roman construction in Spain, the walls of the Roman city of Tarraco. Built in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the walls are still an imposing sight with all the authority of their height (6 metres) and thickness (over 4 metres). To give us an idea of what Tarragona was like in ancient times, we take a look at the detailed scale model of Roman Tarraco, showing the city at the height of its splendour in the 2nd century AD. We will continue our visit of the city, strolling along its streets and admiring the beautiful Plaça de la Font. We will arrive at Santa Maria Cathedral (visit of the exterior) on a site previously occupied by a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter and a Muslim mosque. This beautiful church blends Romanesque and Baroque styles and its large rose window is often compared to those of much more famous churches such as Notre Dame in Paris. The visit continues with the Roman circus (visit of the interior), one of the most significant archaeological sites in the city, created in around the 1st century AD on the orders of the emperor Domitian. Used for chariot racing in ancient times, it measures 325 by 115 metres and is estimated to have a capacity of over 30,000 spectators. The Tarragona Circus is one of the best preserved in the Western world, despite the fact that the structure continues to be hidden beneath old 18th century buildings. Our itinerary continues to the Amphitheatre (visit of the exterior), a building dating back to the early 2nd century, where sacrifices were made and gladiator displays were held. At the centre of the Amphitheatre we find the remains of the plan of a Visigoth basilica, built to commemorate the sacrifice of Saint Fructuosus and his deacons. At the end of the visit we will enjoy some free time to admire the magnificent view of the Mediterranean. We recommend that you book early because only a limited number of places are available. The itinerary may be subject to change. This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems. PAGE 9

Santa María de Poblet is the largest Cistercian monastery in Europe, while the ducal town of Montblanc still retains a magical medieval atmosphere. Espluga de Francolí, Monastery of Santa María de Poblet Montblanc, city walls, church of Sant Miquel, Royal Palace, Plaça Major, church of Santa María la Mayor With this itinerary we will discover the historical and artistic legacy of the Cistercian Order founded by the French abbot Bernard of Clairveaux. The austere spirit of this congregation led to the creation of a style during the transition period between Romanesque and Gothic. We will leave Tarragona by coach and head towards the interior through villages, mountains and the valley of the river Francolí. We will arrive at Espluga de Francolí where we will visit the Monastery of Santa María de Poblet, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by a beautiful wood, it is the largest inhabited Cistercian monastery in Europe. It was founded in 1151 thanks to a generous donation from the Count of Barcelona Ramón Berenguer IV and played an important role in the life of the village, contributing towards its numerous estates, its recolonisation and the cultivation of the lands recently reconquered from the Muslims. It features a church (with various royal tombs) and a primitive cloister (12th-14th century), surrounded by various rooms and buildings from various eras up to the 18th century including the Abbot's Palace, the chapels of Sant Jordi and Santa Caterina, the Royal Palace, the ancient cloister of Sant Esteve and the new sacristy. The monastery enjoyed the special protection of the Catalan kings until the early 19th century when the monks were forced to leave due to the laws of ecclesiastical condemnation. The monastery then fell into a state of abandonment until 1940 when it was reopened for worship and underwent a restoration project to return it to its former splendour. At the end of this enjoyable monastery visit we will get back on the coach and head for the enchanting medieval village of Montblanc. The village with its impressive walls, 1.7 km long and one of the best-preserved examples in Catalonia, maintains the medieval atmosphere of a place that was once the residence of kings and knights. Montblanc was at the height of its splendour during the reign of James the Conqueror. From the church of Sant Francesc outside the walls, we will arrive at PAGE 10

Within the walls the guide will introduce us to the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel, the Royal Palace, Plaça Major and the church of Santa María la Mayor in Gothic style with a Baroque façade (visit of the exterior). During the visit to Montblanc we will admire the lifestyle of the locals, the traditional shops and the relaxing, peaceful atmosphere of the streets of this extraordinary ducal village. Praça do Comércio Rossio (Dom Pedro IV Square) Praça dos Restauradores Avenida da Liberdade Parque Eduardo VII District of Belém and residential area of Restelo: Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries A city of contrasts blending modern and classic architecture, Lisbon is bathed in extraordinary light that accentuates the variety and intensity of its colours. The capital of Portugal boasts a wealth of unmissable locations: Praça do Comércio, considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe; the Rossio, the name commonly given to Dom Pedro IV Square, the beating heart of the city from where all the main streets fan out; Praça dos Restauradores, the square created to commemorate the liberation of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640, featuring an obelisk on which the dates of the Portuguese Restoration are marked; Avenida da Liberdade, considered to be the most luxurious street in Lisbon with its fountains and the abstract designs on its pavements, where once only members of high society were permitted to walk; and Parque Eduardo VII, one of the city's largest green spaces, which was created in the late 19th century and named after the British King, Edward VII. During the excursion we also have some free time to take a walk in the centre. We then stop in the Belém district and the residential area of Restelo, where we visit the Jerónimos Monastery. The tour ends with a photostop to the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, which was built in 1960 to mark the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator and to celebrate the geographical discoveries made by Portuguese navigators from the 15th century onwards. 26 Lisbon: Belém district and tower, Monument to the Discoveries We begin with a sightseeing coach tour of the centre of Lisbon including: Praça do Comércio, considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe; the Rossio, the name commonly given to Dom Pedro IV Square, the beating heart of the city from where all the main streets fan out; Praça dos Restauradores, the square created to commemorate the liberation of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640, featuring an obelisk on which the dates of the Portuguese Restoration are marked; and Avenida da Liberdade, considered to be the most luxurious street in Lisbon, with its fountains and the abstract designs on its pavements, where once only members of high society were permitted to walk. Leaving Lisbon we travel through the protected area of the Sintra national forest on narrow roads that lead us to a world of mystery. We visit the fabulous, and impressively lofty Palacio da Pena, which sits immersed in a stretch of woody terrain in the park of the same name. Associated with Portuguese discoveries, the palace was built on the foundations of an old convent erected to celebrate the sighting of Vasco de Gama's returning fleet. Unmissable sights in this monumental building include the beautifully preserved chapel and Manueline-style cloisters. Together with the National Palace with its high, conical chimneys, the Palacio da Pena is one of Sintra's main attractions. We have some free time before lunch to visit Sintra's romantic town centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since Next we head to a local restaurant to enjoy a typical Portuguese lunch. Before returning to the ship we head to Lisbon's Belém district to admire the tower of the same name and the Monument to the Discoveries, which was built in 1960 to mark the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator and to celebrate the geographical discoveries made by Portuguese navigators from the 15th century onwards. We also stop in a charming fishing town and visit a winery where we will toast with a glass of excellent wine. 25 de Abril bridge Stop at Sesimbra Arrábida Nature Park Azeitão: winery and wine tasting session 0 We leave the city of Lisbon on our coach and head south through the estuary of the river Tagus crossing the famous 25 de Abril bridge, one of the longest suspended bridges in the world that stands out for its red colour against the blue water backdrop. We stop over in the picturesque town of Sesimbra, a lovely resort located in a secluded bay where fishing is still an activity of primary importance. We get back on our coach and venture into the amazing Arrábida Nature Park stretching between the blue ocean and green mountains and offering one of the most spectacular views of the coast just outside Lisbon. The reserve safeguards the Mediterranean shrub, generated by the microclimate of the Serra de Arrábida and its proximity to the sea. We then continue towards Azeitão, a small town at the edge of the nature park surrounded by olive groves and vineyards that cover the gentle hills of the Portuguese countryside. 29 Lisbon TIME OUT ON THE BEACH OF CARCAVELOS We travel by coach through Lisbon, admiring some of the major monuments, as we head towards the Carcavelos beach with its boundless stretch of sand overlooking the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Sightseeing tour of Lisbon Praça do Comércio and the Belém district * Carcavelos beach We begin our excursion with a sightseeing tour of Lisbon, a fascinating city that over the centuries has charmed travellers and sailors. Keeping to the coast, we can admire some of the main places of interest in the Portuguese capital: the great Praça do Comércio, with its five Catholic churches and typical colonial houses, and the historic district of Belém dotted with monuments dating back to the 15th and 16th century, built to celebrate the Portuguese discoveries. We leave the city, heading west along the northern bank of the Tagus River towards the most popular beaches accessible from central Lisbon, with their expanses of sand lapped by the ocean. Our final destination is Carcavelos beach, where the Portuguese traditionally go on New Year's Eve for their first swim of the year. A kilometre and a half long its clean water is renowned for surfing, golden sand and excellent facilities. We have around three hours of free time available to enjoy this enchanting location undisturbed, sunbathing, going for a dip or just admiring the view. Don't forget a swimsuit, towel, sunglasses and sun cream. 012G 4 1/2 Hours approximately Easy EUR EUR Water Activity Recommended to families Vigo MEDIEVAL IMPRESSIONS: VIGO AND THE ANCIENT VILLAGE OF BAIONA PAGE 29

30 Galicia and its delightful towns boast Medieval charm, the fruit of a thousand years of history and the scent of the ocean. Monte del Castro Baiona Panoramic Vigo Parador Monterreal After leaving the port by coach we head for the Monte del Castro: situated close to the sea, it is one of the symbols of the city and hosts a vast luxuriant park. We stop briefly here to admire the panorama of the city of Vigo, the bay and the port. Back on our coach we proceed along the coast road in the direction of Baiona, one of the major and most characteristic fishing villages on the Galician coast. Its historic centre, with its quaint narrow streets and neat stone and granite houses, cobbled streets and the views from the ramparts with a sheer drop above the sea, exudes an atmosphere of orderly tradition and a sense of pleasant intimacy. It was right here, on 1st March 1493, that one of the caravels of the Columbus expedition, the "Pinta", having crossed back over the Atlantic Ocean, docked on its return to Europe with the news of the discovery of the "New World". Today a replica of the Pinta is berthed in the very same port. After our stroll around the historic centre, we visit the Parador Monterreal, an imposing 16th century palace, built in the style of a Galician manor house within the walls of a Medieval fortress. Today it houses a splendid hotel, whose centrepiece is the magnificent stone staircase which leads from the entrance to the floor above. From the terrace you can admire the wonderful panorama of the city while enjoying a drink at the bar of this magnificent hotel. Once back in Vigo, a short panoramic coach tour gives us an overview of some areas of the city. Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. 31 Vigo SPAIN AND PORTUGAL FACE TO FACE: BORDERING ON HISTORY Travelling between Spain and Portugal: cathedrals and fortresses amidst impressions of ancient times and scenes that evoke historical battles Valença do Minho Fortress Panoramic view of Tui Cathedral City of Tui Cathedral of Santa Maria We leave Vigo and head south towards the Province of Pontevedra and we cross the border to reach Valença do Minho, a charming town situated in the north of Portugal on the main artery which links Santiago di Compostela and Porto. We stop to visit this magnificent fortified town, with its characteristic star shape, whose walls shelter pretty small squares and picturesque alleys which leave indelible impressions in our memory. The city was originally founded with the name "Contrasta", because it was built in front of the Galician city of Tui at the behest of King Sancho I of Portugal after the breakdown of the marriage of his daughter Teresa with Alfonso IX of Castile. Its current name dates back to From the fortress of Valença we admire the view of the fortified cathedral of Tui, on the opposite bank of the River Miño. We return to the coach and after crossing the border back into Spain, we visit Tui, which has been declared a city of historical and artistic interest. In this city in the Province of Pontevedra we visit the*cathedral of Santa Maria*, founded in 1120 and subsequently an embattled fortress in Romanesque-Gothic style. From the tower, which is like a balcony overlooking the river, we can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city before returning to Vigo. Space is limited, so please reserve early. 00UZ 4 Hours approximately Moderate EUR EUR PAGE 31

32 Cultural Meal not included Vigo THE ROAD TO SANTIAGO AMIDST NATURE AND SPIRITUALITY We cover a part of the Road to Santiago, in contact with Nature and spirituality, before arriving in the city of Santiago to visit the Cathedral. In our free time we have a taste of Spanish cuisine in a splendid 15th century hotel. Road to Santiago Santiago Cathedral Lunch with traditional tapas The coach takes us to the point of departure of our walk. Even though this is the part of the "Road to Santiago" which is meant to be covered after arriving in Santiago, today it is one of Santiago's most fascinating walking itineraries. Other sections of the French Way lead to the centre of Santiago along new roads with modern buildings. Once we reach the point of departure a 5 km walk awaits us; a winding trail through forests, mountains and rivers. During our walk we will be immersed in Nature for a totally unique experience, in which meditation and spirituality come together in search of an often lost contact with the beating heart of the world. The excursion ends in Santiago with the visit to the Cathedral, one of the most important Catholic sanctuaries and the burial place of the Apostle Saint James the Greater, patron saint of Spain and Christian martyr. The most important aspects of the building will be illustrated to us by a guide. It will be possible to visit the interior independently. In our free time we can go for an enjoyable walk in the picturesque alleys of the historic centre. We can then enjoy a lovely tapas lunch, the traditional Spanish finger food, and other typical delicacies at the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos, an exclusive five star hotel built in 1499 to accommodate pilgrims when they arrived in Santiago. After lunch, we still have a little more free time before going back to Vigo. The length of the Cathedral visit and the free time available may vary depending on the time taken for the walk. 00V9 6 1/2 Hours approximately Hard EUR EUR PAGE 32
