1 Malmö Overview Malmö is a province located in southern Sweden, overlooking the Öresund Strait, just 15 miles away from Denmark s capital city of Copenhagen. The city covers over 120 square miles and it is inhabited by 290,000 people, which makes it the third largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg. Malmö was originally one of the earliest industrialized towns in Scandinavia, now it has transformed into a thriving multi-cultural city, full of sights and activities for visitors of all ages. Shopaholics should visit the enormous Triangle Mall, which has 78 shops and restaurants all under a spectacular glass roof. The mall is located in the heart of Malmö, within walking distance of the Central Train Station. For a more personal shopping experience head to Formagruppen, which is a gallery and shop that showcases work from over 20 professional artists and handicraft makers. Label lovers will adore Baltzar City, which is a commercial street filled with exclusive designer brands. The city is full of historical architecture from the 14th century Saint Paul's Church to the beautiful half-timbered houses in Lilla Torg. Several Museums offer an insight into the rich cultural history and have comprehensive guided tours in the English Language. Malmö is also home to some impressive modern architecture, such as the 3 mile long Öresund bridge and the futuristic HSB Turning Torso skyscraper. Malmö has a large selection of dining options that cater for all tastes and budgets. Visitors wishing to sample some traditional Swedish cuisine should take a trip to Restaurant Trio, which serves up delicious gourmet dishes in stunning surroundings. Swedish cuisine is generally practical and centers around fresh seasonal produce such as kale, potatoes, cabbage, loganberries, pickled fish, crayfish and beef. Famous dishes include Gravlax (seasoned smoked salmon), Palt (dumplings filled with pork), and Korv Stroganoff (Sauteed sausages in a thick sauce). The city also has a number of International Restaurants which offer authentic dishes from Spain, France, Thailand and even Vietnam. The area has an oceanic climate, which is relatively mild partly thanks to warm air that is pushed up from the Gulf Stream. Summer generally lasts from May to September, when temperatures usually average around the low twenties and visitors can enjoy up to 17 hours of daylight a day. Winters are cold, with temperatures regularly dropping below 0 C, with snowfall most common between December and March. Rainfall occurs all year round, so pack an umbrella just in case! Malmö has all the modern facilities to make your trip run smoothly, including 24 hour ATM s in the city centre, several Bureau De Change booths, a Tourist Information Centre and several Internet cafes that offer high speed connections from 15 SEK per hour. Places to Visit HSB Turning Torso The unusual HSB Turning Torso was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in The 190 metre tall skyscraper consists of nine segments that individually rotate 90 degrees clockwise to create a spectacular visual effect. 2 Lilla Torg Lilla Torg is a charming market square situated in the heart of Malmö. It features 16th century half-timbered houses and a beautiful warehouse that is home to the Design Centre which showcases exhibitions that are related to architecture. In the summer months the square is transformed into a bustling area filled with pretty outdoor restaurants. Öresund Bridge The impressive 4 lane Öresund bridge was built to link the Danish capital of Copenhagen to the city of Malmö. Construction began in 1995 and the bridge took four years to complete, while the official inauguration took place in The best way to view the 3 mile bridge is to take a trip on the Öresund railway line, which has frequent services that depart from Malmö Central Train Station and cross over the bridge. Malmö Museum The Malmö Museum provides an interesting insight into the history of the Nordic region. From a real submarine, live sheep, piranhas and Sweden s oldest surviving renaissance castle, the museum has a whole host of exhibitions to entertain all ages. Guided tours in English start at 2pm at weekends in the months on July and August. St. Peter s Church The Magnificent St.Peter s Church was built in the 14th century and is a fine example of Baltic Gothic architecture. The church has several unusual features, including a black limestone and sandstone pulpit, beautiful wall-paintings, stained glass windows and several gravestones that remain on the church floor and date back to the early 1500 s. The church is open to members of the public 7 days a week and admission is free of charge. King s Garden The beautiful King s Garden (Kungsparken) is Malmö s oldest public park which originally opened in The garden features manicured lawns, the Pegasus statue, and exotic trees - making it the perfect place for a picnic in summer. Admission is free for visitors of all ages. Regular Events January - Trettondedag Day (epiphany) Celebrated on January the 6th, the Epiphany is a national public holiday which traditionally celebrates god appearing in human form as Jesus Christ. This Feast features a number of religious parades throughout the streets of Malmö. February - February - Valentines Day Malmö is a beautiful place to enjoy a romantic Valentines Day on February the 14th. 3 The International Children s Festival, otherwise known as BUFF, aims to educate, inspire and entertain, with over 100 film screenings and workshops that are suitable for children of all ages. The event takes place over 5 days in Mid-March in Stortoget. April - Walpurgis Night The popular Walpurgis night is celebrated in Pildammsparken Park, and features the lighting of a giant bonfire - a tradition that dates back to the 18th century to ward off evil spirits. Nowadays Walpurgis Night is used to mark the end of winter and the coming of spring. May - May Day The colourful May Day Parade hits the streets of Malmö on May the 1st and weaves its way through some of the areas most loved attractions. June - Flower Festival June brings the beautiful Flower Festival which sees Folkets Park transformed in a beautiful space filled with blooming flowers of all colours and sizes. Entry costs 50 SKR for adults, while children under 12 get in free. July - SM Week The relatively new SM festival features a week of elite sporting events that are held in across the city in mid-july. August - Malmö Festival By far the largest annual event is the Malmö Festival, which attracts over 1.4 million people who come to experience live music, workshops, performances dance shows and exhibitions in an electric party atmosphere. The festival is held over a week in late-august and it is completely free for all! September - Rainbow Festival Malmö s annual Rainbow Festival is held over 5 days in late October and features films, live music and art shows that celebrate lesbian, gay and transgender culture. Events are held in various venues across the city. October - Halloween The night of Halloween is celebrated in Malmö with a pumpkin carving evening at Rotract Club, followed by a special Halloween party where hundreds of revellers come dressed in spooky costumes. November - Malmö Arena The enormous indoor Malmö Arena can hold up to 15,000 people and is home to large scale events such as hockey matches and concerts from some of the world s top performers such as Lady Gaga. 4 The month of December brings a festive Christmas Market that is held in Gustav Adolf Square. The market features traditional handicrafts and local produce making it the perfect place to do some Christmas Shopping. Keep an eye out for Skyltsöndag (shop Window Sunday), which is held on the 3rd of December and sees store owners compete for the most attractive window display. Getting Around Airport Transfers Malmö is served by the Malmö Airport (MMX), which is located 17 miles away from the city centre. There are a number of transportation options that connect passengers to the Malmö area. Over 30 Flygbussarna coaches leave from outside of the airport terminal to downtown Malmö every day, with an approximate journey time of 40 minutes. Taxi s are also situated outside of the terminal and work on a fixed fare of 395 SEK for a single trip to the city centre. Train Malmö Central Station has been operating train services since Since then it has it has grown into a large train hub, with frequent trains to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Lund, Gothenburg and Helsingborg. A daily overnight train runs to Berlin and there are connecting services to Olso. Skane Commuter Railways operate the local routes to the South of Malmö to other areas in the province of Scania such as Ystad. Tickets can be purchased at automated machines inside Central Station, or at the manned ticket offices during opening hours. Bus Three companies operate buses in Malmö: Gråhundbus, Swebus Express, and Säfflebussen. Buses to Copenhagen take approximately 1 hour and work out cheaper than the trains. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver and timetables can be found in Central Station. Taxi Taxis are a clean, convenient and reliable way to get around the area. Taxi ranks are dotted throughout the city, including outside of Central Station. Cabs can be flagged in the street, providing the taxi sign is illuminated, or pre-ordered by phone. Fares work on a fixed rate which is agreed with your driver before departing - remember to always ensure the taxi is a registered and a reputable company, such as Taxi Skane, Taxi Kurir or Taxi 97. Boat Visitors can hire a pedalo boat in Amiralsbron fro an unusual way to explore the canal (open from April to August). Finnlines operate a ferry link from Malmö to Travemünde in Germany, and daily ferries depart for Copenhagen. Bike One of the most rewarding ways to explore the city is by bicycle. Malmö has numerous special cycle lanes and cycle traffic lights that allow locals and visitors to safely travel around the area. The are a number of companies that hire bikes on an hourly basis, and there are plenty of places to lock up your bike, including the purpose built bicycle raft on the canal outside of Central Train Station. page 4 / 5
