1 Split Overview The historical city of Split is located on the Dalmatian Coast in south-western Croatia. Its stunning architecture, year round programme of special events and plethora of activities help to make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in both Croatia and Eastern Europe. Shopaholics are catered for with famous high street and luxury shops that are located on Marmontova Ulica Street. The famous Outdoor Market provides visitors with a more authentic and traditional shopping experience, where vendors sell fresh produce, flowers and local handicrafts. Local vendors line the streets in the summer months, particularly around tourist attractions such as the Diocletian Palace, and provide the perfect place to pick up a holiday souvenir. Visitors will be spoilt for choice when eating out, as there are a number of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. Split s location on the Adriatic Sea gives it an excellent selection of fresh seafood which is used in traditional dishes such as the popular Croatian brudet a delicious mixed fish stew. Vegetarians and vegans are also catered for with tasty fresh salads, along with several restaurants that offer only meat-free dishes. There are also several international restaurants serving up Italian, American, Asian and French cuisine. Fast food chains can be found on the main high-street, while local cafes provide a great place to pick up a quick snack for those in a hurry. Split s stunning historical archetechture can be admired throughout the Old Town district, which is classed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Visitors can gain an insight into the cities rich past at the Archaeological Museum, which displays a number of Croatian artifacts, while several galleries showcase important works of art from some of the countries most prolific artists. Split s idyllic seafront location allows visitors to spot some extravagant yachts and boats in the Harbour, while small tourist boats depart for day trips along the Dalmatian Coast in the summer months. Another reason why Split is such an attractive holiday destination is its beautiful Mediterranean climate. Summer lasts from May to September with long hours of sunlight and temperatures that average around the mid-twenties. July is the hottest month with air temperatures frequently exceeding 30 C - so remember to pack the sunscreen! Winters are pleasant and mild with temperatures rarely dropping below 5 C. Rainfall occurs most frequently during November January, although it can occur all year round. Split has all the facilities required to make a vacation more enjoyable and convenient, including a number of 24 hour ATM s in the city centre and bureau de change booths located in major banks and in Split Airport. A Tourist Information Centre is situated next to the Diocletian Palace and helpful staff are happy to give visitors free maps, guides and information. The currency used is the Croatian Kuna (HRK). Places to Visit Diocletian Palace The spectacular Diocletian Palace was built by the Roman Empower Diocletian in preparation for his retirement at the turn of the 14th century. The palace has remained in relatively good condition and visitors are free to explore the area and get a feel of what it may have been like in all of its former glory. The palace has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and it is a much loved landmark in the city. page 1 / 5

2 Brac Island (Otok Brac) The pretty Brac Island is the largest island on the Dalmatian coast, covering 396km². Its historical architecture, along with beaches and the pretty harbour-front make it a great place to explore on a day trip, or even on an overnight stay. Frequent ferries depart from Split Harbour every hour in the summer months, and the journey takes approximately 45 minutes. Salona Originally the capital of the Roman Empire, Salona is a historical town that lies a few miles away from Split city centre. Visitors can explore the remains of the Greek empire, including several settlements and an impressive amphitheatre. Admission costs 40kn for adults including a map, and the area takes about 3 hours to explore fully. Old Split The area of Old Split is a must see for any visitor to the city. Its historical streets are filled with beautiful structures and attractions, including the magnificent Diocletian Palace. In the summer months vendors line the streets selling local produce, flowers, art and gifts, while locals and tourists dine al fresco. Medjugorje The site of Medjugorje became world famous after 6 children living in the remote village claimed to see apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Since then a number of religious miracles have occurred which have helped to attract many pilgrims from around the world, who travel to the village to find spiritual peace. Medjugorje is located quite some distance from central Split, however local buses depart to the village from Split central bus station 4 times a day. Ivan Mestrovic Gallery The gallery was founded by the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic in 1931, and completed according to his own plans in The gallery features a large body of Mestrovic s work, from enormous bronze sculptures, to delicate paintings and sketches that he made throughout his career. Archaeological Museum Split Originally founded in 1820, the Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum in Croatia. It displays a number of artifacts and archaeological items that relate to Croatia s rich history, including medieval coins, pre-historic bones and findings from the Diocletian Palace. The museum is open all year round from Tuesday until Sunday, and admission costs 20kn for adults and 10kn for children. Regular Events January - New Year Split prides itself on having some of the most elaborate New Years celebrations on the Dalmatian Coast. Many locals head to the Riva promenade to watch a spectacular firework display and listen to live music performances from local bands. An enormous dance night is also held in the Spaladium Arena, which attracts thousands of revellers who come to party into the small hours of the morning. page 2 / 5

3 February - Split Carnival The traditional pre-lent carnival is widely celebrated throughout the streets of Split with colourful processions and live music from local bands. A number of masked balls also take place in the evening, complete with harlequins and theatrical performances. March - Olympic Sailing Week The popular Olympic Sailing Week has been taking place since The event sees hundreds of sailing boats compete in an annual regatta, while spectators gather around Uvala Baluni Boatyard and the surrounding coastline to cheer on participants. April - Croatia Boat Show Split s culture and character is very much influenced by the sea, and this is reflected in the large number of regular events relating to boating. April brings the annual Croatia Boat Show, the largest regional event of its kind, which features over 350 boats, workshops, parades and informative historical lectures about the nautical industry. The event attracts over 29,000 visitors during 9 days in mid-april. Tickets can be purchased from the website in advance, or at the entrance of the event in Split Harbour. May - Saint Dominus Saint Dominus is Split s patron saint, who is widely celebrated on the 7th of May with an enormous feast and a special parade around the St. Duje Cathedral. June - Split Summer Festival The much loved Split Summer Festival takes place over a month from mid-july to mid-august. During this time a wide variety of events are held within the city, including theatrical and dance performances, live music shows and informative lectures and workshops. August - Days of Diocletian's This relatively new event encourages locals and tourists to participate in a reenactment by dressing up in togas and tunics with olive wreaths on their heads. The mayor of Split gets involved in the celebrations by taking part in a parade that travels across the streets of Split to the historical Peristyle. At night the promenade is filled with street performers, while locals enjoy a traditional feast. September - Split Film Festival The largest film event in the region showcases feature films from both up-and-coming and established talent from around the world. Screenings are held in various cinematic venues across the city, while the opening ceremony is held in the Central Movie Theatre. November - Split Graphic The biennial Split Graphic event showcases works of art and designs that relate to the graphic design industry. 4 December - Christmas Fair Throughout the month of December, the streets of the Old Town district are transformed into a festive Christmas market, where vendors sell traditional Croatian handicrafts and gifts. Getting Around Airport Transfers Split is served by the modern Split Airport (SPU), which is located 25km west of the city centre. Registered airport shuttle buses depart from directly outside of the airport terminal and cost 30kn, while local buses depart from the bus stop opposite the parking lot. The fares for the local buses are cheaper than the airport bus, but sometimes passengers are required to change buses to get to downtown Split. Taxis provide the most convenient way to travel to and from the airport - a main taxi rank is located outside of the terminal building. A metered fare to Split city centre should cost around 300kn and take approximately 30 minutes. Train The central train station is located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the port and the Old Town district. Local trains are operated by Croatian Railways and run from Split to Zagreb and Perković, with a number of stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased from automated machines and manned ticket offices inside of the train station. Bus Split has recently updated its fleet of local buses, so most are now modern and comfortable, although some of the old buses still remain. There is a set price for tickets, regardless of how far the journey is (within the city limits), which currently stands at 10kn for any single journey. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks around the city centre, or from the bus driver - although it costs 2kn more per ticket. As soon as you board the bus you must stamp your ticket at the validation point in the yellow ticket machine. A number of long-distance buses depart for destinations such as Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Zadar and Rijeka, but all require passengers to pay an additional luggage fee which costs between 3kn and 7kn EUR per item. Boat Splits's coastal location gives it a large number of boat transportation options, most of which depart from the main harbour terminal. Several international boat companies operate long-distance trips to destinations such as Pescara in Italy, while local companies run ferries that travel up and down the coast between Dubrovnik and Rijeka. Smaller local boats, tourist ferries and hydrofoils operate short day trips which provide the perfect way to view the beautiful Croatian coastline. Taxi There are an abundance of taxis in Split, both at designated taxi ranks and travelling through the streets. Most taxis only accept cash payments, but passengers will find that most fares are great value for money.
