Or, put another way, it is the sum of many different settings that make up a unique land where work and leisure go hand in hand. We have the Mediterranean, with beaches, small coves, sheer cliffs and charming fishing towns, such as Cadaqués or Calella de Palafrugell. A world of possibilities opens up for organising small-scale incentive trips and meetings. Nature offers landscapes of great beauty such as the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of Garrotxa, magical beauty spots such as Vall de Núria, immense forests such as those surrounding the picturesque villages of Oix and Beget, or wide and bright valleys such as Cerdanya. And, in the middle of it all, we find cultural gems such as the mediaeval town of Besalú. 18 18 Fira de Girona and Girona Conference Centre The Girona trade fair site, which promotes the city s various economic sectors, is composed of the Exhibition Centre and the Conference Centre, occupying a total surface area of 30,000 in Devesa Park. The Exhibition Centre, the main building of the Fira de Girona site, occupies a surface area of 10,000 on two levels. You can trace the history of the territory as you travel through it, following in the footsteps of different civilisations. You can start by travelling back to the 7 th century BC, visiting Iberian settlements such as Ullastret, followed by the ruins of Empúries, a magnificent monumental complex with remains from the Greek and Roman occupation. The mediaeval period deserves a chapter to itself, thanks to a whole series of exceptional historical sites: the majestic monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, which seems to dominate the Mediterranean, or the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, considered the cradle of Catalonia; the Jewish legacy of Girona Jewish quarter; the ancient towns of Besalú, Tossa de Mar, Pals or Peratallada, authentic outdoor museums; and Romanesque art, scattered throughout the area, a treasure shared and carefully preserved by many towns. The cultural offering of these counties also includes the landscape paintings of Joaquim Vayreda, one of the leading painters of the Olot school, or the paintings of Marc Chagall, who found refuge in Tossa de Mar, his blue paradise. The most internationally renowned local artist is Salvador Dalí. His name will be forever associated with that of the Costa Brava, thanks to three sites where visitors can immerse themselves in the life and work of the genius from Empordà: the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Salvador Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat (Cadaqués) and the Gala Dalí Castle House- Museum in Púbol, in the municipal district of La Pera. Without a doubt, it is on a par with the beauty of the landscape and is an important factor in ensuring the success of business meetings. The great culinary tradition of this region goes back a very long way and is based on its magnificent geography and climate, thanks to which excellent sea and mountain ingredients can be obtained: Mediterranean fish, top quality meat and artisan cured sausages, a wide variety of vegetables, mushrooms, olive oil and fine wines with the Empordà Denomination of Origin seal. What is more, Girona s gastronomy today is synonymous with creativity. Just as Salvador Dalí surprised the world with his surrealist works, another genius, Ferran Adrià, has amazed everyone with his recipes. His famous restaurant, El Bulli, situated right on the Cap de Creus, was for many years one of the world s benchmarks for avant-garde cuisine. It has now been turned into a foundation that we will hear a lot about in the future and that will continue with the innovative work of its creator.
