2 T HE M ETROPOLITAN M USEUM OF A RT Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Before it was toppled during World War I, the House of Habsburg was perhaps the world s greatest imperial dynasty, producing kings from Portugal to Croatia and ruling the Holy Roman Empire for 300 years. Travel with us from Sarajevo to Vienna, crossing four countries to uncover the hidden glories of this lost empire. We are delighted that Wolfram Koeppe, the Marina Kellen French Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, will be leading this trip. An erudite and witty lecturer, he has led other Travel with the Met programs to great acclaim. Step back in time to Sarajevo, where the Habsburg Empire came to its end. Explore its Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, and see where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated the catalyst that sparked the Great War a century ago. Admire the grand Habsburg buildings of Zagreb, Croatia, known as little Vienna, and spend two nights in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where the dynasty held sway for almost six centuries. Nearby Bled, nestled on an alpine lake, is a postcard-perfect place for a traditional pletna boat ride, followed by an exclusive dinner in historic Bled castle. In Austria, enjoy a private director s tour of the treasury of Castle Esterházy in Forchtenstein. Conclude TRAVELING WITH YOU Wolfram Koeppe is the Marina Kellen French Curator of the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. His recent exhibitions and publications include Princely Splendor, The Dresden Court (with co-curator Ian Wardropper, 2004), European Furniture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (with Daniëlle Kisluk- Grosheide and William Rieder in 2006), and Fascino del Bello, Collezione Terruzzi (2007). A leading specialist in the decorative arts, he organized the award-winning landmark exhibition Extravagant Inventions: The Princely Furniture by the Roentgens. A short video prepared for this exhibition demonstrating the mechanics of the famous Roentgen Berlin Cabinet went viral on the internet and has an unprecedented number of over four million views. Dr. Koeppe is known for his wideranging interest in the decorative arts and sculpture, reflected by the acquisition of major works, many of which are included as essential masterpieces in the new Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide (2012). u with three days in Vienna to visit its marvelous sights. Enter the Salvation Tunnel, which was the city s lifeline while Sarajevo was under siege by Serbian troops. Then explore the culture of Bosnia-Herzegovina at the National Museum (pending timely opening), which is also home to the Sarajevo Haggadah, the oldest Sephardic Jewish document in the world. After lunch, transfer to the airport for a short flight to Zagreb. A brief orientation tour includes Mirogoj Cemetery, one of the most beautiful graveyards in Europe and a final resting place for members of all religious groups. Check in at the Hotel Esplanade, an Art Deco palace where we will also dine tonight. The Latin Bridge, Sarajevo. NEW YORK Friday, June 20 Depart New York on an overnight flight to Sarajevo. SARAJEVO, BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA Saturday, June 21 Arrive in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the early afternoon. Enjoy a brief orientation tour before checking in at the splendid Hotel Europe, located in the heart of the Old Town. This evening, gather at the hotel s Viennese restaurant for introductory remarks by Wolfram Koeppe, followed by dinner. SARAJEVO Sunday, June 22 After a morning lecture, a walking tour introduces the landmark buildings of the Old Town, including the Bey s Mosque and the Old Orthodox Church. Following lunch, explore the Habsburg side of the city, in particular the majestic buildings along the Miljacka River. See the spot on the Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated, setting off a chain of events that would lead to World War I and the end of the Habsburg Empire. The evening is at leisure. Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagreb. ZAGREB u LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA Tuesday, June 24 This morning explore historic Zagreb, in the past divided into the Lower and Upper Towns. Ride a funicular to the Upper Town to see the lively Dolac farmers market and recently renovated cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece. Continue via motorcoach to Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia. En route, stop for lunch at Castle Otočec, Slovenia s only water castle, on an islet in the Krka River. In Ljubljana, a private tour of the National Museum of Contemporary History outlines events since the breakup of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. LJUBLJANA Wednesday, June 25 A morning tour highlights Ljubljana s Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau landmarks as well as the 20th-century works of world-renowned architect Jože Plečnik. Ride a funicular to Ljubljana Castle for sweeping views of iconic sights, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Peter s Church, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, Triple Bridge, and Dragon Bridge. After lunch, drive to Bled, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Europe by Travel & Leisure. Situated on the banks of a glacial lake, Bled has attracted pilgrims since ancient times. Ride a historic pletna, a gondola-like boat, to Slovenia s only island. Then visit the Baroque Church of the Assumption where, locals claim, ringing the bell will make your wishes come true. Continue to Bled s historic castle, perched high above the lake, to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine while taking in the magnificent views. Conclude with a private dinner at the castle. VIENNA Friday, June 27 Attend a morning lecture before we visit the Augustinian Church to see the magnificent cenotaph of Archduchess Maria Christina, created by Baroque sculptor Antonio Canova. Then take a behind-the-scenes tour of the City Palace Liechtenstein, ancestral home of the still-reigning royal family of Liechtenstein. The palace recently underwent an extensive renovation to restore it to its prewar glory. After lunch, those attending tonight s optional Fête Impériale (the Summer Ball of the Spanish Riding School) may wish to take a waltz lesson at one of Vienna s historic dance schools. The evening is at leisure. VIENNA Saturday, June 28 A morning walk takes us to nearby Hofburg Palace, the former winter residence of the Habsburgs. A private tour with the Director of the Treasury, showcases the crown jewels, including the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the riches of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Following lunch, drive to the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, the royal summer residence. Return to the hotel for an afternoon stroll to St. Stephan s Cathedral, considered Austria s most important Gothic masterpiece. LJUBLJANA u VIENNA, AUSTRIA Thursday, June 26 Following an early breakfast depart for Graz, a lively university town and the birthplace of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Stroll through the exceptional Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to many Habsburg monuments. After lunch, drive to Forchtenstein for a private tour of the treasury of Castle Esterházy in the company of the Director of Collections. VIENNA Sunday, June 29 A curatorial tour highlights the newly installed galleries of the Kunstkammer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, followed by time to explore the collection on your own and enjoy lunch at leisure. In the late afternoon drive to Eisenstadt to see Esterházy Palace, a beautiful Baroque palace known for its association with Joseph Haydn, who composed and premiered many works here. Visit the palace with the head of collections, then celebrate a memorable trip with a private farewell dinner in the glittering Spiegelsaal (hall of mirrors). OPTIONAL PRELUDE DUBROVNIK, MOSTAR & SARAJEVO June 17 to 21, 2014 Spend two days in delightful Dubrovnik, a walled city known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. See the treasures of the Old City, damaged during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s and restored with UNESCO s assistance. Visit nearby Lokrum, a lush island that was once the summer residence of Habsburg Archduke Maximilian, and spend a day in Mostar, a picturesque town with Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences. Its namesake, the Stari Most (Old Bridge), was rebuilt after its 1993 destruction. 7 u T ERMS & C ONDITIONS u AIRFARE Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements for this program, including specially negotiated group airfare when available, group flights or your own individual requests for a processing fee of $40 per person. Complete details will be provided in your confirmation mailing. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $2,000 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All participants must be in good health. This program involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs at monuments and other locations not handicapped accessible. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs or, in some cases, videotapes of participants of Travel with the Met trips may be used for educational and promotional purposes by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and AAA. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of the Met is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, the Met and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or wellbeing of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. The Met and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
