1 OPTIONAL PRELUDE 1000 Fifth Avenue New York, NY January 31 to February 4, 2011 Siem Reap is our base for exploration of the legendary archaeological site of Angkor. The treasures of Angkor are best appreciated in the proper natural light and whenever possible, without the company of large tour groups. With this in mind, our exact schedule during our three-day stay will be determined on location. Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID ACADEMIC ARRANGEMENTS ABROAD SAILING THE MEKONG Tr e as u r e s of C am b od i a & Vi e t n am Highlights of our visit include the magnificent 12th-century Angkor Wat Temple and Banteay Srei, whose carvings are among the most beautiful in Asia. We will explore Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, and majestic Bayon Temple. A morning visit will focus on the Roluos Group of temples: Preah Ko, Lolei and Bakong. We will also see the Ta Prohm temple group. Untouched by archaeologists, Ta Prohm allows us to imagine the awe of early explorers when they first saw these spires entwined with roots and tree trunks. $1,295 PER PERSON SINGLE SUPPLEMENT $330 Includes three nights accommodations at Sofitel Phokeethra Angkor in Siem Reap; breakfast daily, three lunches and two dinners. Of all the world s great rivers, the Mekong is probably the most unspoiled. Pristine tropical landscapes, unchanging fishing villages and ancient temples are found on its banks. As we move along the river from Cambodia to Vietnam, we will also experience two very different cultures. Cambodia, both before and during the Angkor Empire, gave birth to one of civilization s great cultures; Vietnam, which had an ancient civilization of its own, is a nation of hard-working, energetic and practical people. Traveling with us on this exceptional journey will be noted art historian and author Olivier Bernier, who lectures to sold-out audiences at the Met. A widely popular and erudite study leader, he has accompanied previous trips to Asia to rave reviews. Our program begins in Siem Reap to discover the dazzling temples of Angkor. For sheer immensity, Angkor is unsurpassed among the archaeological wonders of the world, wrote Russell Ciochon in Archaeology. In stone tonnage, its massive temples dwarf the pyramids of Egypt and Mesoamerica, and its sculptures are the artistic equals of the best of Classical Greece or Renaissance Europe. S AILING THE M EKONG The Tre asu res of C a m bo di a & Vi e t na m Then we embark on a seven-day cruise abroad the luxurious La Marguerite. This new river boat, with her spacious cabins, is the perfect floating hotel from which to see the rich and exotic sights along the banks of the Mekong.
