2 Name of Vessel in Fowey Cormilan Previous Names Coatham Cross The Coatham Cross was built by R.Dunston (Hessle) LTD in 1981 for Tees Towing Co Ltd and registered at Middlesbrough. Official Number Call sign G.R.T She was one of several tugs built at the time with a LOA of m a beam of 8.8 m and a draft of 5.0 m. Her 2 Ruston 6RK3CM engines driving two schottel SRP 503/505 units producing 35 ton bollard pull and a speed of 11.5 knots. The engines had a continuous Rating 1320bhp at 800rpm. The propellers had a diameter of 2100mm and a speed of 230 RPM. Electrical power was provided by two lister HRW6MA engines with a continues rating of 64.5BHP at a speed of 1500rpm She was based in Middlesborough until the sale to Fowey Harbour Commissioners on 12th April 2011 but worked from there to neighbouring ports including the Tyne. She was +100A1 Tug +LMC LEA Lloyds Register of Shipping Classification Society Class Notation In 1990 Cory Towage (Tees) Ltd bought Tees Towing co and ownership transferred to them followed by in 1995 a change within Cory s to Cory Towage Ltd, London. This was followed by Wijsmuller Marine Ltd, Middlesbrough in 2000 and then Svitzer Marine Ltd buying that company in The Coatham Cross named after the community at the south side at the mouth of the Tees estuary worked until 2010 when she came out of class and was placed in reserve as Svitzers upgraded and modernized their fleet on the east coast. She was advertised for sale at around Her sister tug the Yarm Cross worked in the Tyne and another of the class works in Belfast

6 With her sister tugs in the Cross fleet Coatham Cross and her sisters Tees Tug Base in 1985 photos Michael Green In the Summer of 1990 Cross tugs /the Tees Towage Co was put up for sale with eight multidirectional tugs including the Coatham Cross was purchased by Cory Towage for 24m and she was owned by the subsidiary company Cory Towage (Tees) Ltd. In 1995 she was transferred to Cory Towage Ltd A funnel change included the addition of the white edged blue Cory diamond. This was gradually changed to the well know Cory funnel markings and superstructure colours.

7 Seen in the Cory Colours On the right on 4th October 1997 Cory funnel and house flag Two 55 ton bollard pull stern drive tugs for the Tees fleet were ordered in October 1998 from Astilleros Zamakona in Spain for delivery in 2000 to replace Coatham Cross and Yarm Cross.Neither were replaced at the time and continued in service on the Tees and also in the Tyne.

8 Cory towage was taken over in 2000 by Wijsmuller Marine with the Cory Diamond staying in the funnel for a while. The Hull had blue bulwarks, there was a white superstructure a a reddy orange bridge top. The Maltese cross in the funnel was changed later Another change in the towage world saw Svitzer Marine take over Wijsmuller Marine in 2001,

9 The acquisition of Wijsmuller, which involved a sum between EURO 136 and EURO 182 million, made the smaller Svitzer in one fell swoop one of the biggest tug and salvage companies with a fleet of 220 ships and around 1,600 employees in 23 countries. 17 The Re naming Ceremony Formally renamed Cormilan by Mrs Mary Pemberton the chairman s wife on 26 th May 2011 Cormilan A new giant for Fowey Harbour The name Cormilan follows the Cornish giant theme of The Commissioners tugs Morgawr and Tregeagle.

18 The story of Cormilan According to local legend, Cormilan, a derivation of Cormoran, was 5.5 m (18 ft) tall and measured about 2.75 m (9 ft) around the waist, he and his wife Cormelian (whose name also appears as a variant of Cormoran) were responsible for the construction of St Michael's Mount. In the days of the giants, however, it was six miles from the sea, and was known as The White Rock in the wood. Cormoran needed a high lookout point above the trees to keep watch over the neighbouring country, he chose his building materials carefully and only granite would be suitable. Together the giants carried granite from the West Penwith Moors; Cormelian carried the huge boulders in her apron. When Cormoran fell asleep from exhaustion, his wife tried to sneak a greenstone from a shorter distance away. Cormoran awoke and kicked the stone out of her apron, where it fell to form the island of Chapel Rock. Trecobben, the giant of Trencrom Hill (near St Ives), is said to have accidentally killed Cormelian while throwing a cobbling hammer over to St Michael's Mount for Cormoran to use. Cormelian came out of the cave did not see the hammer coming through the air and it struck her between the eyes. She fell dead at the giants feet, they were grief stricken and their upset caused a storm at sea. They buried Cormelian beneath Chapel Rock. Cormoran would wade ashore and snatch livestock from local farms, a reward was offered in return for killing the giant and a young boy called Jack came forward. One night, when Cormoran was sleeping, Jack crept over to the Mount and dug a deep pit halfway up one side. In the morning, Jack blew on his horn to wake the giant from his slumber. The giant came running down the side of the Mount but could not see Jack as the sun was in his eyes and, not noticing the hole, fell into it. Jack then killed him with a blow from his pickaxe and then filled the hole in. Jack became a local hero, and from then on was known as Jack the Giant Killer. Above the grave is a large stone called the Giants Grave. If you walk up to the castle you come across a heart-shaped stone on the pathway which is the giant s heart. Rumour has it that if you stand on the stone you can still hear the giant s heartbeat. Towing the Nordland back to her berth on Nos 8 jetty General Arrangement plans

24 Laid up in the River Fal near King Harry Ferry alongside Sea Breeze which had been a casualty towed into Fowey She was bought by a company in the Caribbean and renamed La Dani registered in Dominica J7CL6. Re-named La Dani and in drydock to have schottel unit refitted La Dani sailed from Falmouth at 0645hrs on 15 th November 2011 heading into the bay of Biscay. She sailed down the Spanish coast bunkering before heading across the Atlantic entering the Caribbean sea on 4 th December and arriving in Dominica on
