2 PHEFACE This publication contains a summary of the traffic volumes taken in Bri.tish Columbia during the years 1964, 1965, 1966 and A good coverage of all n~~bered highways in the Province is presented. The data obtained has been compiled as Average Daily Traffic Volumes for July-August period of the year except for a few locations where the month is noted beside the count" A SHORT COUNT OF AT LEAST 24 HelmS DURATION IS COMPARED TO THE COUNT FOR THE Sp}IE PERIOD AT A FERl~ANENT COUNT STATION.AND EYFANDED TO A JULY-AUGUST AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC THE ACCURACY OF TT.JESE RESULTS DEPENDS UPON THE LOCATION OF Tr-iE COUNT STATION IN RELATICN TO THE SHORT COUNT STATION Alm THE CORRELATION OF DEFINED TR.AFFIC PATTERNS. Section I contains tables of variation of 24 hour and of daily variation of traffic during the week. Section II contains a tabulation of vehicular traffic volumes taken on main highways and feeder roads to those highways throughout the Province. The tabulation is by numbered highways. Each count is identified by a station number, the first part of 1tJhich indicates the Highway District in l'11hich the count l{jas obtained, the second part identified it from other stations in the, and the third part identifies the highway number. For exarr~ple: " " is in Saanich District, count nurr.ber 46 and on Highway Number 1.. Note that the Permanent Counter Installations are identified in a different manner" For example: up-11-1" means Permanent Counter in Saanich District and counter number 1 Also please note that the Classified High t ;'I1ay Reference Number refers to the classified road or highvjay on t\thich the traffic count is located. Section III contains a summary of 1967 vehicular traffic volumes taken at Permanent Counters located at points throughout the Province. These have been correlated as AoD.. To, AJrLT", and A,Jv.D.T" for the month concerned. Section IV contains 1967 flovj maps" These traffic now maps show traffic volumes in red. The areas covered by the maps are: Southern Vancouver Island, Northern Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Central and Southern Interior of the Province, and Northern Interior of the Province.

3 Traffic count tenninology used is as follovls: AfT.R.: Junior Counter: "Automatic Traffic Recorder" is the tem applied to the automatic counters used during the survey. These counters record every 15 minutes and total on the hour. Is the tent applied to the non-recording or cumulative type of counter used during the survey. These counters have no timing devices. "Pemanent Counter" consists of automatic traffic recorder similar to the A.T It operates on 110 volt po't-jer and uses a magnetic or loop type vehicle detection system. It totals "Control Stations" are traffic counts taken at strategically control a minim~~ of seven The location of control stations is such that the count could be assumed to have a fluctuation pattern common to all roads in the area. "Short Counts" are traffic counts taken with A. T.R.. counters or Junior counters for a period of not less than 24 hours.. Fajority of counts recorded are of this type. A,D,T.: Daily Traffic Tl inclusive. includes Sunday to Saturday II Average hteekday Traffic If inclusive. includes Monday to Friday IIAverage \eekend Daily Sunday II Saturday and * ** '" '"... It must be emphasized that these counts should not be too freely as some counts may be too heavy due to vagaries of mechanical and electrical tabulating equipment and vandalism to the detectors. Another factor resul ts 1,vhich could be misleading, is the exact location at which the count was It lij3s sometimes to avoid obtainjng a count vjhich VIas influenced a local condition.. BO'\,vever inaccuracies have been eliminated a s far as possible. The reader to in touch with the Senior Traffic be needed for counts.
