1 Summer Work and Travel in the USA Summer 2005 campamerica.com.au
2 Who we are The three happy summers I spent with Camp America as a student taught me many things including how to take responsibility for one s life and to get on with people from different backgrounds. These qualities proved invaluable in my career as an explorer and mountaineer David Hempleman-Adams - Camp America Board of Advisors David Hempleman-Adams was the first person to walk to both the North and South magnetic and geographic Poles and has climbed the highest mountains in all seven continents. Camp America is the biggest and most famous summer work experience programme in the world! Last year 9,000 people from all over the world travelled with us to work in the United States and 94% said they would recommend the experience to their friends! Camp America gives you a confirmed job before departure with the necessary American work permit and visa. By applying to our programme, you will have the opportunity to travel, live and work in a completely different environment, make new friends, develop your skills and most importantly have a fun summer. 6 All about camp Summer camps first began in 1861 since that time the summer camp industry has grown from strength to strength with over 10 million American children and adults attending camps each summer. And with over 12,000 camps in the US, there is something for everyone! From sports camps to drama camps, from camps for kids from the innercity to camps for kids from high-income families, from private camps to those owned by agencies, from Jewish and Christian camps to camps for kids and adults with special needs the list of camp types is endless! Each camp is different but all have one thing in common providing a safe, enriching environment that allows campers to learn and develop through guided activities. Almost all camps are situated in beautiful rural US and most are situated on a lake or river. There are a wide variety of camp types that we work with, but it s our objective to place you at a camp relevant to your skills and experience. Some of the camp types we work with include: Private / Independent Agency / Not-For-Profit Speciality Sports Special Needs Christian Jewish Disadvantaged / Inner City Camps Learning Disabled Girl Scout (Guides) Day Camps for more information check out But the benefits of spending a summer on camp aren t only for the kids attending. As a staff member on camp you are there to share the experience not only with the campers, but with the other staff too living and working alongside each other for 9 weeks you ll make friends that will last a lifetime, learn new skills in leadership, motivation, time management and communication that you will use for years to come. You ll also get the chance to experience life on camp to its fullest potential. 05
7 What you can do at camp It s not easy to sum up what a Camp Counsellor does throughout the summer they become teacher, brother, sister, mentor, supervisor and role model to the kids at camp. No matter where the kids are or what they re doing the counsellors are always there! There are three types of counsellor role: Counsellor, Special Needs Counsellor and Christian Counsellor. As a Counsellor, it s your job to supervise campers ensuring they re attending activities, meal times and they go to sleep each night! It s a demanding role as you ll be with the campers for 24 hours a day and you should be prepared to take part in all aspects of camp life. As each camp offers a wide programme of activities for the campers to enjoy, there are a number of counsellor roles that involve coaching or teaching the children in a particular activity. These can range from sports to arts and crafts, from nature studies and camping to drama and dance. How skilled do you need to be? You don t need to be an Olympic athlete or even a certified teacher. However you should have a strong solid knowledge of your skill and be confident in your ability to teach or assist in teaching. The most important thing you need is to enjoy working with children and previous childcare experience is important. You should also have the energy, enthusiasm and commitment to take on this very demanding role and be ready to throw yourself into anything! So if you re looking for a rewarding, exciting way to spend your summer, Camp Counselling could be it! Special Needs Counsellor If you have previously worked with special needs populations, or would like the opportunity to experience working on a special needs camp, then the Special Needs Counsellor option is for you! It can be a demanding role but one that is certainly rewarding. As a special needs counsellor you ll be required to supervise a small group of campers throughout their stay. It is important to note special needs campers are often adults as well as children and the nature of the position can often require personal care for the campers meaning you may be required to take them to the toilet or help them shower. As some campers may require lifting, the role can also be physically demanding. It s true to say you get out what you put in on a special needs camp and the bonds you ll form with both the campers and your fellow counsellors will last forever. As a Christian Counsellor, you ll be required to combine the elements of counselling with the philosophy of a Christian Camp. On these camps, Christianity is the driving force behind the daily programme and they provide opportunities for Christian nurture and fellowship as well as traditional camp activities, sports and arts. Staff will take part in services, assist in bible study and provide spiritual mentorship. If you have childcare experience and a personal commitment to share and explore your faith, such camps might be just the right place for you! Not Religious? We work with a lot of camps that are operated by Jewish or Christian owners or organisations but are not classed as religious camps. On these camps although children may come from religious backgrounds the main emphasis is on programme activities. Participants on the Counsellor programme are often placed on these camps and whilst you re expected to be respectful of the beliefs of others, you are not expected to share or have any understanding of the religion or to actively participate in religious services. campamerica.com.au 06

10 Where can it all lead? Name: Gabby Hannus Job: Volunteer Development Officer, London Active Partnership Camp Experience: Camp Timber Lake West, New York State, summer 1994 Position on Camp: Waterfront/Lakeside Specialist Camp America was a great experience, something I had always wanted to do and had heard so much about. The long summer breaks we had at University made it an ideal time to go on camp, and as I was doing a Leisure Management degree, it tied in really well. Having Camp America on my CV really helped me when applying for jobs in the sport & leisure industry, employers recognise the skills you learn such as communication, teamwork and leadership. Since Camp America, some of the many opportunities I have had to develop my skills further were as Sports Officer for my university, an event manager on televised sports events and currently as Volunteer Development Officer, increasing sports and volunteer opportunities for young people in London. I would recommend Camp America to anyone with a passion for sport and working with young people. There are many reasons to do Camp America for most of you the reasons will be short term it will be a fun experience, it will give you an exciting place to go in the summer and will allow you to work and travel in the US but Camp America also has many long-term benefits you may not have considered. Life skills Leading a group of young people and helping them to achieve on a daily basis, taking charge of a particular work area on camp, getting involved in things you wouldn t ever have dreamt of doing at home or even being put in the position of meeting new people and living in a new environment are all things which help develop confidence and independence. The effects of camp are extraordinary! Career enhancement The skills you learn are transferable you will find the leadership and organisational skills that camp teaches, as well as the ability to work long hours, cope with stress and communicate with a wide variety of people will prove invaluable in both college and work life. 09

More Camp America quotes It was incredibly hard work, a hundred times more so than last year but every minute was worth it for the friends I made and especially all those underprivileged kids which I hope I helped... it really was awesome. Natalie, New Zealand I am going to camp again because last year I made some of the best friends I have ever had and the connections I made and lessons I learnt are invaluable. Patrick Wood, Australia Waterfront Director, Camp Stewart for Boys, Texas There was a time when I thought summer camp was just something I had to get out of my system. But now, after eight years - the last five of them in a row - I still can t get enough of it. Summer 2005, bring it on! Mark Collard, Australia Camp Blue Star, NC campamerica.com.au 10
