Do NOT arrive before 6:00pm. We apologize, in advance, for any inconvenience. Also, there will NOT be any bathrooms available for use at this location.
DROP-OFF PROCEDURES Upon arrival at The Madeleine School, you and your camper(s) should: 1. Proceed to the designated check-in stations (Boys and Girls), which are at the west end of the plaza on Klickitat (closest to 23 rd ). 2. After campers are checked in, they should proceed to the Yarn Station where they will receive pieces of colored yarn to tag their luggage. The colored yarn identifies which unit they will be in during their time at Camp Howard. 3. Once their luggage is tagged with colored yarn, campers will take their yarned luggage to the luggage truck in the north parking lot. (Please do not pack any medications in your child s luggage just in case ). All medications need to be checked in with the nurse at the Nurse/Meds Check-in. 4. If your camper(s) will be taking medications (prescription or over-the-counter) during their time at Camp, parents should accompany their camper(s) to the designated Nurse/Meds Check-In Station located in the North parking lot. Please remember, any and all medications your camper will be bringing to camp MUST be in their original (prescriptive) container and not expire prior to the last day of their session. This includes both over-the-counter and prescription medications. 5. Once your luggage is given to the camp staff for loading, proceed to the waiting area on the south side of Klickitat Street near the school or the basketball courts/sports field area to await loading of the busses. 6. Parents should stay with their camper(s) at all times until they are loaded on the buses, at which time Camp Howard will assume responsibility for the camper(s). Note: At the end of the camp session, Camp Howard relinquishes responsibility for the campers upon return to The Madeleine School once they have disembarked from the bus and have been signed out by their parent/guardian/designee. Camp Howard staff will remain on-site until all campers are picked up at the bus stop. 7. We encourage all campers to ride the bus provided by CYO/Camp Howard because we feel the ride to Camp Howard is part of the whole camp experience. We realize that some campers live close to camp or in some cases other scheduled activities may make utilization of the included bus transportation, in one direction or the other, impractical. If your child is not riding the bus, you must inform the CYO/Camp Howard Office in advance during business hours (9:00 a.m. 5 p.m., Monday Friday) by calling (503) In the event that you have a late change of plans outside of our normal business hours, call our main number (503) and leave a message for Nora Gravengaard, our Summer Camp Program Director, at Ext. 110 (our phone system auto-attendant will connect you to the correct extension). 8. Safety Rules to be given to campers before every bus departure to/from camp: A) All body parts must remain inside the bus at all times. B) Everyone stays seated for the entire trip. C) No screaming or rough housing. D) All aisles must remain free of bags, pillows, etc. E) If you have a question or need assistance, please raise your hand and ask the attendant camp staff for help.

SENDING MAIL TO CAMPERS Campers LOVE to receive postcards, letters, and care packages from home. Please make sure to send them well in advance, so they arrive while your camper is still at camp. While Corbett is not far as the crow flies, it does take a few days for mail to make its way to us from the Metro area. The majority of our campers receive one or two letters a week or more. We sincerely encourage you to send your camper(s) mail during their session as it is difficult for that one camper who does not get any mail while away from home. If you send something express by UPS or Fed-Ex, the package must have a signed release form, which allows the carrier to leave the package at the Camp Office. Do not send anything by Certified Mail, as that also requires a signature, and will not be delivered to the Camp by the USPS. Address your child s mail as the example shows below (make sure to include a return address): Camper Name Session # - Date (of camp attendance) Camp Howard SE Camp Howard Road Corbett, Oregon July 6 th -9 th = Session 1A (Weekend Camp) July 9 th -14 th = Session 1 July 16 th -21 st = Session 2 July 23 rd -28 th = Session 3 July 30 th -August 4 th = Session 4 August 4 th -6 th = Session 4A (Family Camp) August 6 th -11 th = Session 5 August 13 th -18 th = Session 6 We strive to ensure that Mail that arrives after a camper has left is forwarded, whenever possible.

IMPORTANT MEDICATION INFORMATION All medications sent to camp with your camper(s) must be in the original containers. Prescription medication must be properly labeled by a pharmacy, including of its valid and current physician s prescription and detailed dosage information. Items for which prescription labels are affixed to a separate box (i.e. asthma inhalers, eye drops, etc.) must include the box. All over-the-counter medications sent for your camper(s) must also be in their original containers. It is not legal for our camp nurses to dispense medications without doctor s orders present and prescriptive medications not packaged correctly will not be dispensed to your camper. You will be contacted and given the option to bring the required prescriptive documentation to camp, as necessary. Please place all medications in one Ziploc bag with your child s full name written on the bag. Also include any specific additional written instructions you may have about the medication you are sending to camp with your child. All medications are kept locked in the Health Center and are dispensed per doctor s orders with your child s cooperation by our Camp Nurse. Please note that our Health Center is fully stocked with common over-the-counter medications, (i.e., Tylenol, Advil/Motrin, Claritin, Benadryl, etc.) so you don t need to send an assortment of these medications to camp. HOMESICKNESS Rest assured, Camp Howard staff is well trained in how to handle homesickness and we will make it our priority to ensure your camper has a successful and fun week. If your child has never been to camp before, you can help make their experience a successful and enjoyable one, by talking before they leave for camp about all the fun activities they are going to do. Tell them it is okay to miss you as long as it doesn t ruin their fun. COUGAR AWARDS For almost 60 years, Camp Howard s longest running tradition, the Cougar Award, has been presented each session to campers who exemplify generosity, humility, self-growth and good citizenship while at camp. It is awarded to campers who not only try to grow from their experience at camp, but who help other campers grow during their stay as well. When the award is given for the first time, a camper will get the necklace award as well as the respective bead for that season. Each summer that the camper receives the Cougar Award, they will earn the respective bead, from a sequence starting with Mini Camp (Cougar Cub Bead) and ending with staff (Blue Staff Bead). Earning a Cougar Award is an achievement many campers strive for; and one enthusiastically celebrated by campers, CITs and staff alike.
CAMPER CROSSES We started our Camper Cross program in 1997, to help teach Christian values and encourage campers to employ them in their daily lives. Each camper receives a Camper Cross to which a different bead is added each season. The cross also serves as a memento of Camp Howard that each camper takes home with them. If your child attended Camp Howard in the past, make sure they bring their cross with them this season to add this year s bead. If their cross has been lost we can replace it, upon request during their camp session. CELL PHONES At Camp Howard campers are allowed to bring their cell phones, but please consider that excessive use of cell phones to call home can increase feelings of Home Sickness for many campers. We encourage and consistently enforce proper cell phone etiquette at all times, which means that cell phone usage is not considered appropriate during meals, scheduled camp activities, campfires, Mass, etc. Appropriate usage times ( FOB time or cabin time, etc.) and expectations of use will be given to campers by their Unit/cabin staff on their first day at camp. CYO/Camp Howard is not responsible for camper cell phones, should they be broken, stolen or lost. LOST & FOUND Camp Howard is not responsible for any items that are left at camp. Please be sure to label all items with your child s first and last name. All lost and found items are returned to the Portland Office approximately one week after your child s attendance. Please contact the CYO/Camp Howard Portland office at (503) and make arrangements to come in to look for your camper s belongings as soon as possible. We do not inventory the items in the Lost & Found, so we will unlikely be able to give you a definitive answer regarding a specific item(s). Items not collected from the Lost & Found by the end of August 2018 will be donated to charity.
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Camp Howard strives to provide a safe Christian community for all campers. Campers that are unwilling to follow the basic Camp Howard rules make it difficult for our staff to provide this environment for all campers. It is unacceptable for one camper to ruin the experience of other campers. Campers are expected to follow all the rules of Camp Howard or they will be sent home. We will make every effort to work with your camper and redirect inappropriate behavior as necessary, but if other campers are being negatively affected by their behavior, or if their behavior is putting themselves or others at risk, you will be contacted to come to camp immediately to take your camper home. Campers sent home receive no refund for unused services. CAMP HOWARD CODE OF CONDUCT Below is the minimum accepted Code of Conduct for Camp Howard: 1. Respect yourself 2. Respect others 3. Respect the environment including all wildlife 4. Respect the buildings and property of Camp Howard 5. Respectfully follow directions from all camp staff 6. Use proper language at all times. Profanity of any kind is unacceptable 7. Discrimination, bullying and other forms of intimidation or malicious teasing of another person is unacceptable and will not be tolerated 8. There is an absolute Zero Tolerance policy at Camp Howard regarding the use of alcohol, drugs of any type, fireworks, firearms, knives or other weapons that are brought into camp. 9. Any type of sexual or interpersonal relationship based activity, which includes open displays of affection such as holding hands and kissing, is inappropriate Camp Howard behavior and is not tolerated. Any violation of this policy will result in the youth being sent home with their parents/guardians immediately and without a refund.
CABIN/UNIT ASSIGNMENTS/PREFERRED CABIN BUDDIES In order to improve the efficiency of the camp check-in process during our arrival on Sunday afternoons, we have been assigning all campers to units/cabins prior to camp arrival based on their age/grade next Fall. During the camp registration process you will have the opportunity to request a preferred cabin buddy. We will endeavor to assign both your camper and their preferred buddy to the same cabin prearrival. PLEASE NOTE: Preferred cabin buddy requests may not cross Unit Age/Grade limits. Campers will be assigned to Camp Howard units this season as follows: Mini Camp (Boys and Girls ages 6-11, Grades 1-5) Fircrest Unit (Girls ages 6-10, Grades 1-4) Aldergrove Unit (Girls ages 11-12, Grades 5-6) Greenwood Unit (Boys ages 6-10, Grades 1-4) Sparpole Unit (Boys ages 11-12, Grades 5-6) Cougar Den Unit (Boys and Girls ages 13-14, Grades 7-8) THANK YOU PARENTS AND CAMPERS!
