14 Leadership Opportunities Entering grades 9-12 Camp has been a big part of my life, and I have always looked up to my counselors, they are part of the reason I kept coming back. I have always known that I want to become a counselor, and soon I will be able to, and share the camp experience with more girls like me. - Fawkes, longtime Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan camper I began [overnight] camp when I was 11. I was about to enter middle school and I didn t know anyone at camp. I was terrified, but I grew to love camp very quickly mostly because of my amazing counselors. Having seen it from the other side now, I know that the counselors really do care about each camper and want each and every kid in their care to have a great time. It felt that way when I was 11, and it feels that way now, when I can still list the name of every camper I had this summer, as well as their favorite activity, what foods they don t like, their favorite animal, their favorite song, and their favorite color. 16 Troop Events MY TROOP recently returned from the GSHOM Trailmaster troop camp session offered at Camp Oak Hills (July 2017). The timing of this opportunity was perfect for my mixed troop of Cadettes and Juniors. We are gearing up for future backpacking excursions, and my daughter and I were the only individuals in our troop with prior experience. When my other scouts (accompanying us to troop camp) realized they would be loading tents, sleeping mats, and freeze dried food and hiking elsewhere to set up camp, they were hesitant. But as our session progressed, with the confident leadership of camp director, Stump, they became eager and excited. The following day, many of my scouts began asking when our troop would be doing our own backpacking trips. Success! We have sparked a new interest and they've gained new knowledge and skills to safely and comfortably enjoy more of our great outdoors. Bonus: Our Trailmaster session included an in-depth Leave No Trace workshop and that was excellent content. I highly encourage GSHOM to continue to build and offer the Trail Master session for troops. Our girls (and adults) need this type of programming. Regards, Sarah Keep the troop fun going over the summer! Attending camp as a troop will help keep your girls engaged year-round. T rail Master Take your hiking and camping to the next level!
