You will be contacted to bring the necessary materials prior to the workshop, and then you can make your own box oven. A limited number will be made during the workshop so participants from the same troop will make one together. Please have taken Cookout/Campout before this workshop. Crafts from Nature Timeslots #2 & #3 Description: Stretch your imagination. Explore the out of doors and make art from nature. With glue and clippers girls of all ages - adults included - can make animals, games, pictures and mobiles, corn husk dolls, small baskets, ink a fish...or make beautiful thank you notes or invitations for that special event. The possibilities are endless. Please bring small sharp clippers (with your name on it), Also welcome; walnut shells, a clothespin - wood if possible, and any small shells you might have. DIY Camping Equipment Timeslot #3 Description: Buying all the equipment that you might use on a camping trip can add up in cost to both the troop and for individual girls. There are some things that you can make yourself to help cut down on the cost and be more self-sufficient, as well as teaching your girls to become self-sufficient, as well as providing some program at troop meetings by making their own. Learn what your troop can make themselves, and how to do it. Fun Things to Do While Hiking Timeslot #2 Description: It's not always the destination but the journey that's often the fun part. Learn fun things to do on hikes with your troop at camp or anywhere. Learn different types of hikes, things to do on hikes, and things to look for and point out. You should already know hiking basics and how to safely hike in the woods. Wear closed toe, heeled comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather in layers, and bring water bottle. Geocaching Timeslot #1 Description: Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting sport using a GPS-enabled device. Learn how to use your smart phone to navigate and find "geocaches". If you like a set program better, learn about vendors who supply everything, including actual GPS devices. Juniors have a Geocacher Badge, but learn how to take any age troop geocaching for some outdoor program. Some GSCNC camps even have their own hidden treasure boxes!

High Adventure with Girl Scouts Nation s Capital Timeslot #1 Description: Learn about how Girl Scouts can be Risk-Takers at Girl Scouts Nation s Capital s camps. A special focus will be on the new method to request high adventure facilitators, tomahawks, and sling shots, as well as what high adventure opportunities are available at the different camps. After an interactive classroom session, we ll head outside to throw some tomahawks and shoot slingshots. This workshop will not be a tomahawk/slingshot certification training. Inexpensive Nature Related Crafts Timeslot #4 Description: Two goals you may want to do when coming up with crafts for your girls are first, make them nature themed, and second, keep the cost down. Having a nature theme is perfect to do at camp and/or to get the girls thinking and learning about nature. Keeping the cost down helps with the troops funds. Here is your chance to do both in one workshop. Find out where you can get no, or very low, cost materials and learn to make crafts out of them. Lashing: Outdoor Engineering Timeslot #1 Description: Teach your girls to lash and let them create fun and useful camp equipment. Learn to wrap and frap, and maybe try making a self-standing garbage bag holder or a camp table. Take these skills back to your girls and see if they can build a Chippewa Kitchen for a real unique camping experience with them. Letterboxing Timeslot #1 Description: Letterboxing involves orienteering, art, and puzzle solving all in one. It is a growing sport to find hidden boxes by following clues. Find out all about this fun sport, the stamps you use, and which of our camps have letterboxes hidden away for you to find with your next troop camping trip, or if you want a day out just about anywhere, because they are everywhere. Wear proper walking shoes and get ready to search and find. Nature Program Along the Potomac Timeslot #4 Description: Potomac Woods is famous for the Pooh Tree and the River Walk along the Potomac River. Hike to both and learn fun hiking activities for girls, and tips to teach girls of any age about the environment and local nature. This will give you ideas whether you want to use the RiverWalk patch program or just take a fun hike down to the Pooh Tree and/or along the river. Every girl wants to get in the Pooh Tree though! Outdoor Fun for Daisies and Brownies Timeslot #3 Description: In Girl Scouting we want to leave no girl inside so each girl gets the great benefits of the outdoors. That starts as early as possible so they grow up comfortable and with a respect and knowledge of nature and the great outdoors. Whether a leader or teen who will work with young girls, help girls experience nature and start to gain the advantages of outdoor education. Learn outdoor skills, games, and activities to help Daisies and Brownies enjoy the outdoors. Outdoor Games Timeslot #3 Description: Not only are these games well suited to be played in the outdoors, but they also have an outdoor or nature theme that are perfect to get the girls thinking and learning about the outdoors. They can be played at camp, or can also be played anywhere just to get girls thinking about the outdoors. Come learn and try some games that have an outdoor or nature theme so you can then share them with girls to get them interested in the outdoors. Outdoor Program & Recognitions to Get Girls Outdoors Timeslot # 2 Join us for a breakdown and exploration of GSUSA outdoor badges, journeys, patches, and recognitions, as well as an introduction to new Nation s Capital outdoor programming content for We ll look at all these recognitions and come up with the right activities for you to use with your troop and for teen scouts to use when working with younger girls.

Pauline Bunyan Timeslots #2 & 3 combined Description: Some workshops cover knives, and some saws a little, but no other teaches you to safely use axes and hatchets also. This workshop will include an hour of in-depth safety and use of knives, an hour of ax and hatchet, and an hour of saws so you will be able to teach girls how to safely use all these specialty tools so the blades work for you and are not a danger to you or your girls. Please bring a jackknife with you. Slingshot Certification Timeslot #4 (2 times slots) Adults Only Description: Shooting slingshots is a newly approved high adventure activity for Girl Scout Daisies and older. This class will focus on safety, how to teach girls new to slingshots, how to maintain your equipment, and how to create fun games on a slingshot range. This course is for adults only. Please note that you must register and pay a $10 fee separately for this class. Adults register through the Events page of GSCNC.org and searching for Slingshot Training. If you choose this course you will be notified as soon as it is posted so you can register for it. Sign up for either time slot and you will be contacted about what you would like to do the rest of the morning. Soda Can Stoves Timeslot #2 Description: This is a do it yourself, ultralight, alcohol burning portable stove. With that being said, it means it is an advanced cook method where safety needs to be kept in mind at all times. The basic concept has been around for over 100 years, but making one easily out of soda cans is a little more recent. Come learn about safely using alcohol as a stove fuel, make your own stove to take home, and learn what you can cook on this incredible little device. Survival Gimme Shelter Timeslot #3 Description: Shelter is very important in a survival situation and there are many ways to build an emergency shelter. They can be constructed from natural materials, shelter materials you have in your survival kit, or just misc. items you may have on hand or find to create something that could save your life. Come check out different shelter materials, different types of shelters, and how to construct them. Survival Light my Fire Timeslot #2 Description: A survival kit will always have something to start a fire as easily as possible, because your survival may depend on it. In this workshop you will look at and try different fire starting tools so you can decide what is best for you, as well as try different fire starting materials to see what works best. This will include homemade, commercially available, and natural materials. You may even make something to take with you to show your girls or friends. Taking Girls Fishing Timeslot #1 & #4 Description: Fishing is considered a high adventure activity because of the gear used and the location it is done at, and most girls love it. Take a look at the fishing safety activity checkpoints, learn how to safely take girls fishing without it getting out of control, and try your hand at fishing. Camp Potomac Woods has a fishing shed with gear available to use, as well as a pier to fish off of, so learn all about it and have some fun with the gear, or bring your own. Tomahawk Throwing Certification Timeslot #4 (2 times slots) Adults Only Description: Tomahawk and hatchet throwing are newly approved high adventure activities for Girl Scout Cadettes and older. This class will focus on tomahawk throwing, but skills are transferable to hatchet throwing. This class will include both classroom time and range time. This course is for adults only. Please note that you must register and pay a $10 fee separately for this class. Adults register through the Events page of GSCNC.org and searching for Tomahawk Training. If you choose this course you will be notified as soon as it is posted so you can register for it.

Vagabond Cooking Timeslot #3 Description: On Vagabond Stoves that is. These are great little stoves that are easy to make and great for buddy cooking for teen girls. Each little stove can easily cook something for one girl and then the other takes over for hers. At the workshop you will learn what the best meals are for them, but the best part will be you will make your own vagabond stove and get a buddy burner to take home. Weird Ways to Cook Chicken & Other Fixens Timeslot #4 Description: How many ways can you cook a chicken? There are all kinds of unique ways to cook one in the outdoors. Try hanging one from a tripod over your coals, or in a bucket, or on a pioneer spit, or even in a Dutch oven surrounded with veggies. Come try these chicken cooking methods, along with food cooked in food, cans, and other methods for the side fixens. Attend just the 2 hour part, or stay longer for a more leisurely meal and more informal learning. What s Next: Take a Look Beyond Campout Timeslot #1 Description: Is your troop ready to move beyond a typical campout? Are they, and/or you, looking for new outdoor experiences to expand their skills and adventures? If you re not sure of what all that entails then hear what s required and available, as you take a look at the gear, the foods, the cooking methods, the possibilities and opportunities to take them to the next level and outdoor adventure. Whipping, Bighting & Other Knotty Behavior Timeslots #2 & #3 Description: Appropriate for all levels of experience, students tie together the skills of basic knots and teaching techniques. Learn about rope safety, vocabulary, and a variety of knots and hitches. Students will practice application of knots, how to incorporate them into troop activities, and learn about online and offline resources available for further exploration. Participation Sessions Archery Timeslot #1, 2 & 3 Description: Spend a session on the archery range at Camp Potomac Woods and take your turn taking aim at the bulls-eye. (Teens Courses on Next Page)

Teen Courses Gold Award Mini-Meet Timeslots #2 & #3 Description: After you've attended a Gold Award Workshop, now what? You have an idea, maybe even a plan, but will it work? Maybe you have an issue but are not sure how to make an impact? Passionate about your Silver award or a service project but don't know how to bring it up to the Gold Award Standard? Gold Panel members will be on hand to speak with girls one on one or bring your GS advisor too (they just get to listen). Your one on one time will be minutes as panel members become available, so you'll have a chance to learn about some of our other resources including VIP letters, ceremony ideas and scholarship information. Run Your Own Meetings, and Run More Timeslot #3 Description: A basic concept in Girl Scouting is as girls get older they take more responsibility in their troops. Teen troops should be pretty much running their own troop, but sometimes it s not that easy so it doesn t always happen. This teaches girls, and advisors how to help make it happen, how to run meetings, plan activities and events, and take on the responsibilities they are capable of, and then some. Although this focuses on teaching girls meeting management skills, these are life skills that will help girls in all aspects of their lives. Gold Award Workshop - Abbreviated Timeslot #1 Description: This Workshop is for those who need to learn the basics about how to earn the highest award in Girl Scouting. You will learn pointers about what makes a successful project and proposal. It will cover the prerequisites, the complete process, online and other resources available, and acceptable and unacceptable projects worthy of the highest award in Girl Scouting. We will look at a sample proposal and see if it meets the Gold Award Standard. This workshop is shortened as we will not discuss individual project ideas. Come to the afternoon session if you want to get feedback on your idea. Teen Traveling Timeslot #1 Description: Traveling to far places is a part of Girl Scouting that many girls love. Although leaders take a course that gives much information needed for traveling the Girl Scout way, this workshop gets girls involved to take the lead in their trip and learn to travel safely as a group. Girls will learn the steps in planning their next trip and what exactly they can do in that process, and come up with what they want to do on that trip. Get all your questions answered about traveling and, hopefully, come up with your next travel destination. Program Aid Training Timeslot #4 extended / 9:45 2:15 Cadette girls only Description: Girl Scouting builds leadership and one way you learn that is working with younger girls. This will help you become an effective leader by teaching you skills for working with and guiding younger girls. You will use Program Aide skills if you are helping at a day camp, a service unit event, a council event, with a troop, now as well as in your future. Please bring a bag lunch. Silver Award Workshop Timeslot #1 Description: Girls and leaders interested in the Silver Award should attend this workshop. Learn about the steps girls should go through to earn their Silver, the tools available to make sure their project meets the intent of the award, and how to complete the process so girls can receive their award. You can also get all your questions answered at once. Where Do I Get Those Silver Trefoil Hours Timeslot #2 Description: Girl Scouts always give service but the different type hours required for the Silver Trefoil Award can be hard to find, unless you know where to look. Learn about the requirements, the paperwork, and where you might be able to find some of those type hours that are harder to find in your area. Bring and share your own ideas on resources for hours also.
