23 DRAFT AWNING GUIDELINES Albert Lea Historic District March Design Guidelines Awnings Awnings were common along the streetscapes of the downtown commercial district over much of its history. Their function included shading the building and merchandise, shielding pedestrians from the elements, creating a space to socialize and providing a space for signage. They also provide a human scale to taller buildings. As with the architecture downtown, the style of awnings changed over time. The earliest awnings in Albert Lea were initially more loose and billowy. By the second half of the 1800 s mechanical options for operable awnings improved and these varied in form. Some of these provided a more taunt canvas. Canvas was solid in color or striped, sometimes in multi-color and width patterns. Scalloped valances or contrasted colored piping were also used. Awnings were historically sized to fit across the top of a window or door or the entire glass storefront of a building. Replacement awnings should fit this same scale. Fabric awnings on an operable frame are the most appropriate for buildings which are of the district period of significance ( ). Other styles are historically appropriate for or buildings of a later era or where there is evidence that an atypical style awning was present. The awning valance or skirt shall be proportioned to the size of the awning but should note exceed 12 inches in height. traditional (wedge shaped angled) awnings are appropriate for most of the buildings in the Albert Lea Commercial Top Historic District. Dome awnings may be appropriate for arched windows. Other shapes are typically not appropriate to the downtown period of significance.

24 DRAFT AWNING GUIDELINES Albert Lea Historic District March The color of the canvas and signage should be coordinated with that of the building and should avoid clashing with existing neighboring buildings and signs. Downward overhead lighting is most appropriate. Backlighting/internal lighting of fabric awning signs will generally not be allowed. Awning Signs Historic photos of commercial districts of the 1800 and 1900 s show that a business name or address in simple lettering across the valance of the awnings was most common. However, some photos and catalogs of the time period show that signage across the front top or side curtain area of the awning was also present. The fabric and signage options provided a variety of images, but photos indicated that signage was centered on the awning. Designs sometimes included simple logos or boarders in symmetrical layout. Design of the awning sign shall be as symmetrical as possible, although asymmetrical logos are allowed. The sign face may be placed on the valance and should be centered on the awning or over a doorway or window. When the sign message is located on the top of the awning, the logo and/or sign wording shall be centered on the awning both vertically and horizontally Business Name YES NO Business Name

26 DRAFT AWNING GUIDELINES Albert Lea Historic District March Definitions Awning - a roof-like cover, often of fabric, plastic, metal or glass designed and intended for protection from the weather or as a decorative embellishment, and which projects from a wall or roof of a structure primarily over a window, walk or door. Any part of an awning that also projects over a door shall be counted as an awning. Awning Sign - a building sign or graphic printed on or attached directly to the awning material Sign Area - the actual display of letters, symbols, insignias, figures or other media representing a message or communication, the area of which is determined by blocking the media area into a parallelogram and measuring the sides to calculate the square footage.
