2 2015 BOY SCOUT Pistol Program Our 2015 Summer Camp season offers a very special pilot program coordinated by the Illowa Council on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America. First-time shooters and advanced marksmen will be challenged through an exciting array of target presentations. Is the program a success? Check out these results from last summer! What types of handguns are used? Ruger model 22/45,.22 caliber, semi-automatic handguns are used. How many shots do I get to take? In 2014, 600 youth and adults sent over 38,000 rounds of ammunition down range having fun at the pistol range. (That s an average of 63 shots per shooter!) Did it cost extra to shoot handguns? No. As a pilot program, Camp Loud Thunder is offering this program at no additional cost to their campers. (A special thanks to our many generous supporters). Are there other opportunities to participate in shooting sports at camp? You bet! The handgun program is run in addition to our rifle, shotgun and archery ranges. Both the pistol and rifle ranges have lighting to allow evening programming until 9:00 pm! Is training required? Yes. All eligible Scouts and adults must attend an annual 30-minute safety briefing while in camp to be able to participate. Advanced classes offer the NRA FIRST Steps pistol training. Is it safe? Yes. Camp Loud Thunder utilizes adults that are BSA/NRA certified with supervision ratios that exceed recommendations. Safety is our number one concern! Will there be room for my Troop in 2015? We hope so! Camp attendance has jumped over the past few years because of all the innovative new programs we are offering. Space is limited to ensure optimal merit badge class sizes, pool capacity and dining hall seating. The ONLY camp in the Midwest approved for Boy Scouts to enjoy handgun marksmanship! 4 ~You re Invited~ Summer Camp Leader Orientation WHAT: Our Camp Leader Orientation is your chance to find out basic camp information as well as what's new for the year, and meet some of our Camp Staff! You will learn everything necessary for your Troop s summer camp planning. A dinner will be served at 7 PM. Final payments and Merit Badge Schedule requests are due at or before this meeting. 5 CAMP LOUD THUNDER FEES CAMPSITE RESERVATION: Reservations for specific campsites for summer camp 2016 are accepted first during camp 2015 from the Troop in that campsite before departure on Saturday. Should the occupying Troop not reserve that site for the following year before departure, that site becomes open. Open sites may be reserved by any unit on or after Saturday of that week. Reservations require the $50 non-refundable campsite fee to be paid at the time the reservation is made with a completed 2016 reservation form. Reservation forms are available in the Resources section of this guide. Reservations are final with receipt of the non-refundable fee. Every effort will be made to honor the Troop s first choice. YOUTH FEES: The youth fee for 2015 is $255 per Scout (includes a camp patch): The Early Payment Fee is $245 - See paragraph below. Graduating Webelos may pay the early discounted rate of $245. A family sending more than one Scout qualifies for a sibling discount of $10/Scout for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. sibling. Units surpassing their Friends of Scouting goal qualify for an additional discount of $10/Scout. PAYMENT SCHEDULE: To qualify for the $245 discounted youth fee, Troops must meet the following criteria for each Scout receiving the discount: The $75/Scout non refundable deposit must be received by Tuesday, March 31. The balance of $170 for Early Bird or $180 for regular payment must be paid by Wednesday, May 6, Fees will be accepted at the Camp Leader Meeting. Youth not paid on this schedule pay the regular $255 fee, unless they are a graduating Webelos.. ADULT FEES: Adult fees are $90 per adult (includes a camp patch), with a minimum of two per Troop required. 2 Adult fees per Troop ($180) are due by May 6, Small Troop contingents that register and camp together and act as one Troop during camp should contact the Council Program Director well in advance of Summer Camp to make arrangements. Troops may rotate adults within their adult leadership at no additional charge. Troops may purchase extra meal tickets for $6 each for any additional adults during the week at the Camp Trading Post. PROVISIONAL CAMPING Provisional Camping is available for ALL Scouts who wish to attend Loud Thunder this summer who may not be able to attend with their Troop. It is a very popular option for Scouts who wish to take part in the Pistol Shooting Program or the traditional camp program during weeks 1, 2, 3, or 5. Please contact the Council Program Director or the Program Assistant at if you have a Scout that is interested in provisional camping. 5

6 CAMPING SCHOLARSHIPS- CAMPERSHIPS Financial assistance may be available to Scouts who are in need. Funds are limited and granted to Illowa Scouts based on family situations and the Scoutmaster s recommendation. Camperships are provided to supplement the Scout s contribution and other assistance. Camperships are generally for Scouts attending camp for the first year. With planning and participation in the Popcorn Sale and/or Camp Card Sale, a Scout can build a savings for his next year at camp or high adventure activity. Camperships are limited to a maximum of one-half of the basic camp fee and may be less if campership demand is high. The Campership Application form is available in the Resources section of this book and on the Council website at Applications must be completed, signed by the Unit Leader, and received at the Council Service Center by March 31. PLEASE NOTE: The 2015 Campership Application form is the ONLY format that will be accepted for the 2015 Boy Scout Summer Camp session. All applications will be reviewed by the Council Camping Committee, and every consideration will be extended to those who exhibit genuine need. REFUND POLICY Camp fees are non-refundable with the exception of genuine hardships and/or emergencies (family moves out of council, immediate family death, serious illness, etc.). Refund procedures are as follows: The Unit Leader must request any refunds in writing citing full details and including written statements from the Scout and/or his family when possible. Please do not submit family requests directly to the Council without a Scoutmaster s recommendation/approval. This policy is to prevent duplicate requests being submitted. The initial $75 non-refundable deposit will not be refunded. Maximum refunds (monies in excess of the $75 initial payment) are available in the case of families moving out of council prior to camp or in other cases of genuine hardship on a case-by-case basis. Paperwork must be submitted two weeks prior to the scheduled camp session. Other refund requests received in writing prior to the Troop s departure from camp may receive up to one-half of any funds received in excess of the $75 initial payment and will be at the discretion of the Camping Committee. Refund requests received after a Troop s departure from camp will not be granted. All refunds will be made to Troops only, following Camping Committee Review in September. Scouts sent home for disciplinary reasons forfeit all refunds. 6

7 BSA ANNUAL HEALTH AND MEDICAL RECORD All Scout and Adults MUST provide a current Annual Health and Medical Record form Parts A, B, & C upon arrival at Camp. Please note Part C requires a physician s signature. Copies of the BSA Medical form can be printed from our website - Forms page. All medical forms are to be given to the Troop medical person who will present them at camp check in. It is suggested that the Troop make copies to bring to camp. Please do NOT mail them to the Illowa Council Service Center. This form is valid for 12 calendar months from date of exam and must be current while in camp. Adults who are attending camp less than 72 hours are only required to complete Parts A & B. STANDARD OF CARE The camp provides a trained first aid attendant on call 24 hours a day, and arrangements for transportation have been made with local hospitals and ambulance services. BSA policy requires that all injuries receive full medical attention in a timely manner. Situations requiring treatment beyond simple first aid will be sent to a hospital and ultimately referred to the family physician. Every effort will be made to contact parents prior to sending an injured or seriously ill patient to a hospital. However, in urgent situations the first aid attendant will decide the appropriate treatment. GENERAL GUIDELINES Except in emergencies, an adult from the Troop must accompany Scouts under 18 to the Health Lodge for treatment. ALL injuries must be reported to the camp first aid attendant to ensure proper treatment and recording. Incident Reports must be completed on any serious injury or illness. Troop leadership must assist the first aid attendant with these reports as necessary. Medical guidelines for adults: Adults with serious health problems should obtain clearance for camp activities from their personal physician. Temperatures can be hot and humid, and you may exert yourself considerably more at camp than normal. Special arrangements normally can be made for Scouts or Scouters with special needs. Please call the Council Program Director or the Program Assistant at before camp with your concerns. MEDICATIONS Scouts and adults requiring regular medications must bring the medications to camp in their original packaging. Medications will be turned in to the health officer and made available to campers through the use of a locked box system at the Health Lodge. Twice a day (or as necessary) medications will routinely be made available to campers through the assistance of Unit Leaders who will pick up and return the locked medications box to the Health Lodge. ACCIDENT INSURANCE & MEDICAL BILLS: BSA medical insurance is a secondary insurance coverage, or a primary coverage for those members without medical insurance. Should there be a need for insurance coverage, families should follow the following steps: Except when leaving camp for medical treatment with a parent, Scouts must be accompanied by a Unit Leader to a doctor or hospital. The leader should have the Scout s personal health record and insurance information. In the event of ambulance service, the leader should plan to follow the ambulance to the treatment facility. For further information on medical claims please call the Illowa Council Service Center at

8 CAMPER EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST Scouts will pack their own gear into their campsites. Make sure they don't bring more than they can carry. RECOMMENDED: Complete Scout Uniform Shoes 2pr. Please bring clothes that can get wet. TENTS Camp Loud Thunder is happy to supply our Campers with the Boy Scout canvas tents/platform/cots. However, if your Troop or some of your Scouts or Leaders want to bring their own tents to camp that is great! Just let us know when you fill out the Campsite Analysis form at the May Leader s meeting. Note: Units may be required to put up/take down tents based on previous weeks usage. PLAN TO BE BUSY WITH FUN, OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES! The Illowa Council will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. 8

9 CHECK-IN PROCEDURES In order to complete the check-in procedures in a timely manner, you should arrive between 1PM-3PM. Check-in will begin promptly at 1pm. Early check-in is not available. Upon arrival at camp, you will be greeted by an assigned campsite guide who will help you through the check-in process. The primary Troop Leader should start at the Administration Building where they will: Show a copy of their Tour Plan if traveling from a Council other than Illowa. Present a copy of the Troop Roster. (Please find roster form in the Resources section of this guide.) Present completed and signed medical records to the Camp Health Officer. (There will not be a physician at camp, so persons with incomplete medical records will not be able to stay at camp.) Pick up the Troop Packet which includes information for events/activities throughout the week. Turn in the list of Scouts for OA Call-Out on Wednesday evening if applicable. (This can be done at the first leader s meeting as well. This is to ensure we have the correct Scouts on the master list for the Call-Out.) Turn in permission slips for youth involved in the Pistol Pilot Program. PARKING & TRAILERS A parking lot is provided across from the Administration Building for all vehicles. Conditions permitting trailers and pull vehicles will be escorted to and from your campsite by camp staff. For your safety and camp experience only camp service vehicles are permitted beyond the parking lot. Scouts and Leaders should come prepared to pack their own gear into their campsites. SWIM CLASSIFICATION PROCEDURES The swim classification of individuals participating in a BSA activity is a key element in both Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. Traditionally, the swim classification test has only been conducted at a long-term summer camp. However, testing may be done prior to camp - see guidelines below. All persons participating in BSA aquatics are classified according to their swimming ability. The Swimming Test demonstrates the minimum level of swimming ability for recreational and instructional activity in a confined body of water with a maximum 12-foot depth, and with shallow water footing or a pool or pier edge always within 25 feet of the swimmer. Swimmer s Test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, breast stroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting back stroke. The 100 yards must be swam continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating for about one minute. Beginner s Test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place. ADMINISTRATION OF A SWIM CLASSIFICATION TEST Option A (at camp): The swim classification test is completed the first day of camp by camp aquatics personnel. Option B (at unit level): The swim classification test is done at a unit level in accordance with BSA procedures referenced above and should be conducted by one of the following Council-approved resource people: NCS Aquatics Instructor, Adult with Current Certification in BSA Swimming and Water Rescue Course, BSA Lifeguard, or Certified Lifeguard. When the unit goes to summer camp, each individual will be issued a buddy tag under the discretion of the Camp Aquatics Director. Illowa Council requires that the swim classification test be conducted within the current calendar year. The form is located at Camp Forms page. Note: At all times, the Aquatics Director shall reserve the authority to review or retest individuals or entire Troops to ensure the standards of safety have been maintained. 9

10 FLAG CEREMONIES Flag raising in the morning and lowering in the evening is an important camp ceremony. Flag raising starts promptly at 7:50AM. Flag lowering in the evening, or Retirement is a required formation for all campers. Flag Retirement starts promptly at 5:50PM. All Troops should assemble on the Flag Plaza in Field Uniform ( Class A ). * A cannon will be fired. FOOD SERVICE Loud Thunder employs a commercial food service with experienced, trained cooks who prepare all of your meals. We serve cafeteria style with assigned seating. Troops are responsible for cleaning their tables and areas before leaving each meal. Campers with dietary restrictions may request substitutes by notifying the Camp Director or the Illowa Council Service Center in writing at least two weeks before coming to Camp. See Special Diet Request Form in the Resources section of this guide. Meal tickets for adult leaders and visitors may be purchased at the Trading Post for $6 each. LOST AND FOUND Although the Illowa Council is not responsible for any Troop or personal items that may be lost, stolen, or damaged, a lost and found area is located at the Administration Building. Lost and Found items not claimed will be donated to a local charity. ORDER OF THE ARROW The Order of the Arrow is Scouting s youth-run honor camping society, and Loud Thunder Scout Reservation is home to our own OA Lodge, Konepaka Ketiwa Lodge #38. The Lodge holds two Conclaves, several annual activities, and a number of workdays at the camp each year, donating countless hours of work to maintain and improve the camp. At Loud Thunder, cheerful service is more than just a phrase for our Lodge. The Lodge is in charge of the Call-Out ceremonies on Wednesday evenings, and any opportunities to complete the Ordeal ceremonies will be announced before camp. Troops who wish to have Scouts included in the Call-Out should submit names at the Sunday check-in or the Sunday Leader s Meeting. Brotherhood conversion testing for eligible OA members will be available after lunch on Tuesdays with a ceremony following vespers. DINING HALL CEILING TILE PROJECT Camp Loud Thunder is looking for your Troop s help to add some color to our Camp Dining Hall. Each Troop that attends Boy Scout Resident Camp at Loud Thunder this summer is invited to decorate one ceiling tile that will be displayed in the Dining Hall. Troops are given the artistic freedom to design their own custom ceiling tile. Additional information will be provided to Troop leadership at the May Leader s Meeting. 10

11 SHOWERS, BATHROOMS & LATRINES Please follow these guidelines for EVERYONE S convenience: The field latrines in each campsite are the primary bathroom facility for all campers. Please use them and keep them clean. If females will be using your latrine, you must set a usage schedule. For limited adult use, the Men s & Women s bathrooms in the Dining Hall are kept open. The daily service patrol will help keep these clean. A new shower house is connected to the pool for use by adults only. SPENDING MONEY/CAMP TRADING POST Scouts will desire some pocket money at camp. Materials for Merit Badges and special programs often require small sums-see Loud Thunder Merit Badge Guide for specifics. A cold treat is always welcome at the end of a hot day, and of course the Trading Post stocks an array of camp t-shirts, patches, and equipment, as well as ice cream, beverages, and sweets. PHONE CALLS / MAIL Phone lines to Loud Thunder are extremely limited, and we recommend you write rather than call. A Camp phone at the Administration Building is specifically designed for camper use, but it requires calling cards or collect calls. Charging stations are available at the administration building for adults only. 12 A SCOUT IS REVERENT The Boy Scouts of America takes each individual Scout and Scouter s Duty to God very seriously. At Loud Thunder we offer multiple opportunities for each camper to fulfill their own Duty to God during their stay. Duty to God Each camper will receive a devotional booklet at check in which will allow the camper to share daily devotional material and accomplish six simple tasks in order to receive the Duty to God segment for their camp patch. The work for this segment is approved by the Scout s camp leader and is available through the trading post. Leathers This is a more in depth program of Faith and Values for Scouts to work on during their week at camp. There are four different components, one of which can be earned each year. Each component has a different Value and all call upon the Scout to examine his own individual faith as a part of it. The Leathers program is supervised by the resident chaplain each week. The first time a Scout completes a Leather program he will receive a special patch. For the second program he will receive a colored thong and bead for the two programs he has completed, and for the third and fourth, a thong and bead will be awarded. Chapel The Loud Thunder Chapel is located in one of the most serene places in camp and is available to Scouts and Scouters any time they wish to find time to be alone. Interfaith worship service is held each TUESDAY EVENING at the Chapel and everyone is encouraged to attend. Chaplain Aide Each Troop attending summer camp is asked to name a Chaplain Aide who will be invited to work with the Camp Chaplain to bring devotions to their units and to assist in planning and carrying out Tuesday Worship. Each Chaplain Aide will be recognized for their work. Opening Worship For those who have had a long journey to camp on Sunday and may have missed worship that morning, our Chaplains will offer a Catholic Mass and an Interfaith service on Sunday evenings before the opening campfire. 12

13 UNIFORMS The official uniform of the Loud Thunder Scout Reservation is the Field Uniform of the BSA ( Class A ), and we ask that you wear it on appropriate occasions. These occasions include flag ceremonies, morning and evening meals, campfires, and vespers. During the day and on most evenings, feel free to wear an Activity Uniform ( Class B ). This consists of a Scouting t-shirt, Scout pants, Scout belt, and footwear. All clothing should be in good taste and reflect the pride you have in Scouting and yourself. VISITORS & FAMILY NIGHT Families are invited to visit camp on Wednesday night for the traditional Family Night, followed by the Order of the Arrow Call-Out ceremony. On that night the camp will be open to visitors beginning at 5PM and visitors are required to leave camp by 10PM, or at the conclusion of the Call-Out ceremony. Parents are not allowed to return to the campsites following the ceremony. Outside of Family Night, BSA age guidelines are enforced. Troop Leaders are responsible for informing the Camp Director of the Troop s evening meal plans for Wednesday so the correct number of meals will be available. Visitors wishing to join their Troop in the dining hall for a meal must purchase meal tickets at the Trading Post in advance. Troop Leaders may want to purchase these for visitors to avoid long Trading Post lines on Family Night. Other than on Family Nights, individuals who visit camp for less than two hours are considered VISITORS. Persons who stay with us more than two hours are considered CAMPERS. All visitors must check in and out at the administration building. For the safety of all our campers pets are not allowed in camp. Leaders should let all parents know these policies. VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE The camp staff would like to thank everyone for their generous support in keeping Camp Loud Thunder looking great. Each year we get lots of compliments about the overall appearance of our camp. This is because of our wonderful volunteers who donate their time and efforts to make sure camp looks good. If your Troop is interested in working on a camp project, please let the Camp Commissioner know. Again, we want to thank you for helping keep Camp Loud Thunder looking great! 13

14 THE CAMP LAW The principles of the Scout Oath and Law are the guiding principles of the Loud Thunder Scout Reservation. Within that context, the following are some general rules that apply to all campers and visitors for everyone s health and safety. 1. Tobacco, alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are NOT allowed in our Scout Camp. 2. Fireworks are prohibited in camp. 3. Personal firearms are prohibited in camp. 4. No flames of any kind are allowed in tents. 5. Advise Scouts to leave valuables with leaders. Watches, spending money, and other valuable items should not be left in a shower room or an unattended campsite. Unit Leaders should bring a footlocker or other lockable container to protect campers' valuables. 6. Troops that use their own tents are encouraged to comply with the National Camping Standard of 30 square feet of living space for each camper, and should meet or exceed canvas manufacturer CPAI-84 standards. 7. This camp will comply with sound ecological and conservation policies to the maximum extent possible. Troops should take measures to properly dispose of all trash and to recycle aluminum cans. 8. An emergency drill will be conducted each week of camp. All Troops are required to participate. Specific instructions will be provided at the Leader s Meeting on Sunday evening. All leaders will be informed of the time and date and that time/date will not be changed. 9. In cases of disciplinary action, Scouts asked to leave camp will be picked up at their parent s expense. Camp fees are forfeited when Scouts are asked to leave camp. 10. The Camp Director and/or Council Program Director will consult with Troop Leadership and/or parents concerning any disciplinary action at camp. 14

15 FIRST YEAR CAMPER PROGRAM Trailblazers More than ever, we feel the Trailblazer program is a great way to work on advancement to First Class and to get familiar with the Loud Thunder Scout Reservation. Our goal is to have Scouts complete ONLY those portions they need for advancement. In the morning, Scouts will work on Rank Advancement Requirements. At 2pm and 3pm, Scouts can choose from many Merit Badges. At 4pm Scouts who choose to can participate in the Trailblazer session at the pool. Scouts will be working on the Swimming merit badge or instructional swim class (depending on skill level). This includes aquatic rank advancements (depending on skill level). HOW TO PARTICIPATE? Participating Scouts will receive a Trailblazer Card which lists rank requirements up to First Class as well as where and when in Camp these requirements will be taught and tested. All this will aid your Scout in knowing where to go, when to go and what they need to accomplish. Requirements completed with one of the staff members will be initialed on the Scout s Trailblazer Card, and later signed by Troop leadership if approved. PLEASE NOTE: Although there will be a Trailblazer Coordinator, the first year at camp is always a pivotal experience, and we hope that your Troop will assign an adult or youth leader who can support these newer Scouts in their advancement at camp. This is a special program and will run each morning Monday-Thursday. (Trailblazer Achievement Card found in the Resources section of this guide and copies will be provided for your Scouts) LOUD THUNDER MERIT BADGE PROGRAM IN GENERAL: Some merit badges are very difficult to complete at camp with the time and resources available. Others, like Basketry, may finish very early. Scouts may pick up additional badges at any time during the week by talking with the area staff. If joining an on-going merit badge, Scouts have the responsibility of asking the counselor s permission to join the class AND what work they might have to accomplish to catch up with the other Scouts. The Merit Badge schedule is Monday- Thursday. Scouts will have time Friday morning to complete any unfinished merit badges, or do a make-up if a class was cancelled due to weather. To allow for this, there is no planned Friday morning program. A leader may want to bring something for Scouts who have completed all their merit badges to work on or consider doing a unit Service Project. REGISTRATION: The Merit Badge Schedule Request Form is located in the Resources section of this guide and/or at Each Troop is encouraged to complete this form and submit by the May Leader s Meeting. The Camp Program Director will process the schedules and communicate with the Unit Leader prior to camp. BLUE CARDS: The Troop will be notified of their Merit Badge Schedule at least two weeks prior to their arrival at camp. Scouts should come prepared with blue cards filled out for each merit badge they are taking. All Scouts should bring their blue cards with them to their first class and submit them to their Merit Badge Counselor. SHOOTING SPORTS: Loud Thunder offers a full range of Shooting Sports activities for skill and just for fun. These include.22 Cal Rifle, Shotgun, Archery, and Pistol Marksmanship Program. Due to the nature of these activities, participating youth should be more mature, able to concentrate on an activity, and be sufficiently coordinated to master the required skills. Shooting Sports merit badge participation is limited to those 13 and older. Exceptions to this rule are at the discretion of the Shooting Sports Director. There are extra fees for most of the Shooting Sports activities - See Loud Thunder Merit Badge Guide in the At Camp section of this guide. PISTOL PROGRAM: Loud Thunder s Pistol range is located in Lower Camp. Scouts must be a least 14 years old to participate in the Pistol Shooting Program. Each two hour session can accommodate 6 Scouts, for a total of 18 Scouts per week. Open Shoot times will be available several evenings for Adults and all Scouts (who meet the age requirement). As a pilot program, no additional fees will be charged for this program. Note: Pistol is not yet a merit badge. Participation requires parental approval. (Form included in this guide.) WATERFRONT: Loud Thunder s waterfront is located on Lake George at the Lower Camp. For all Waterfront merit badges, individuals MUST meet the Swimmer s Test requirements. It is suggested that anyone who goes into Lake George bring a pair of old, hard-soled, lace-up sneakers to wear in the water. 15

20 OLDER SCOUT ACTIVITIES SENIOR PATROL LEADER TRAINING Does your Troop have older Scouts that want to go to summer camp but are looking for a different opportunity? The NEW Senior Patrol Leader Training is unique to the Illowa Boy Scout Council. Previously this class was only available at the University of Scouting in November. We have brought it to Camp Loud Thunder to offer more boys the opportunity. This training was developed as an aid to help guide the troop youth leadership to a better understanding and better performance of their troop leadership positions. Senior Patrol Leader Training is not designed to replace NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), but is meant to enhance it. Senior Patrol Leader Training will be offered on Tuesday 7:15-9:00 PM & Thursday 6:30-8:30 PM. You must attend both classes to complete this course. Each participant will need to bring a copy of The Boy Scout Handbook and The Senior Patrol Leader Handbook. Senior Patrol Leader Handbooks will be offered for sale at the trading post. There are no additional fees for this training. CHALLENGING OUTDOOR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (C.O.P.E.) Participants learn to overcome mental and physical obstacles both as a group and as individuals. They are taught through group dynamics how to formulate a safe workable approach, execute their plan, and then evaluate the results. C.O.P.E. goals are the development of leadership, trust, communication skills, self-esteem, teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making skills and FUN. Participants will experience innovative games, low-course events, and high-course activities including the caving ladder, balance beam, monkey bridge and the thrilling zip-line. Each week 24 participants (Scouts ages 13+ and adult leaders) can sign up for the C.O.P.E. program to be held Monday through Thursday. Priority is given first to Scouts by their age, then to adults at random selection. There is one four-day, full afternoon class offered. There is no additional fee to participate in this program. CLIMBING The CLIMBING program is for those interested in earning the Climbing Merit Badge and thus learning the skills of climbing, rappelling, and belaying in a safe and fun way. National Scouting standards and requirements are taught for unit climbing and rappelling The class will be offered in two sessions during the morning program and includes the bouldering wall and 30-foot climbing tower. Class size is limited to 10 Scouts per session. The class will take a field trip to the Mississippi Palisades on Fridays to complete the Climbing Merit Badge Requirements. Leaders will be asked to assist with driving. Additional fee charged to cover transportation cost: $5.00 token ($5 tokens for sale at trading post) Adults may be certified in Climb On Safely and may assist (at the discretion of the C.O.P.E. Director) if working on their Climbing Instructor training. Full Climbing Instructor training is offered by the Illowa Council C.O.P.E. and Climbing Committee in the Fall and Spring ( C.O.P.E. and Climbing are tentatively scheduled based on availability of qualified staff. 20

21 ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES FOR ALL SCOUTS TROOP CANOE OUTING Your Troop can arrange for a box breakfast or dinner, check out some canoes and spend the evening on Lake George. Stop where you want for dinner, explore what you want, and have some fun down time. Prove your skills to the Waterfront Director, and you re off on your Troop outing. A minimum of two adult leaders will be required, and BSA water safety rules will be enforced. TROOP MOUNTAIN BIKE OUTING Sign your Troop or Patrol up for a tour around the reservation on the camp s mountain bikes. There are several trails available, and you can choose from a quick fun ride, an afternoon or evening with a box lunch, or even an overnight outing. There are 12 mountain bikes available, many with detachable panniers (saddle bags for bikes). A minimum of two adult leaders will be required. GEOCACHING at LOUD THUNDER If you ve ever been geocaching, you ll know what fun it is. Scouts and adult leaders can sign out a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) device, fire it up, and seek out as many of the Loud Thunder treasures as you have time for. The only rule is, you have to sign the book when you find it, take something from the cache, and replace it with something of comparable value for the next group. Common items are Scouting patches, beads, coins, etc. Just don t put anything edible in the treasure chest- we want to keep the animals out and KEEP THE SECRET! CAMP SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES Sports are always an option at Loud Thunder. There are many opportunities to compete as a Troop in volleyball, GA-GA Pit, Human Foosball, 4-Square or to play just for fun! 9-Square is our newest game and is FUN for Scouts and leaders alike. It is available anytime you get your friends together. Just check out the equipment at the Camp Office whenever you would like to play. Let the Camp Program Director know if you want to organize a game with another Troop. \GIANT CHESS Challenge your friends to a match of incomparable size. This can supplement our popular Chess merit badge offering, but is available to all campers. Checkmate! 21

31 Camp Loud Thunder Pistol Pilot Program Participation and Hold Harmless Agreement Camp Loud Thunder, located in the ILLOWA Council, will be conducting a pilot program for pistol safety and marksmanship during This program is conducted under the approval of the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts will be instructed on how to handle, maintain, and shoot a pistol safely and be provided instruction on how to increase their marksmanship skills. Scouts will have both classroom instruction and range instruction at Camp Loud Thunder property where they will fire a pistol under the supervision of a trained Range Safety Officer and Pistol Instructors. Scouts will be required to wear eye protection and ear protection at all times while on the range. Scouts are expected to abide by all safety rules and the instructions of the Range Safety Officer(s) and Pistol Instructor(s). I, the undersigned, give my child,, permission to participate in this program. I understand that participation in the activity involves a certain degree of risk. 32 LOUD THUNDER SCOUT RESERVATION West of Andalusia, Illinois ADDITIONAL DIRECTIONS From the North or East: Pass through Andalusia, stay on Highway 92 with the Slough River on your right. Past the campsites along the Slough and the last boat ramp, the road will curve to the left (south) and climb a hill. At the top of the hill IGNORE signs to the Loud Thunder Forest Preserve and continue South, going down the steep hill. Towards the bottom, IGNORE the entrance on the right and CONTINUE to the bottom of the hill and start up the other side. About a third of the way up, there will be a sign to the Boy Scout Camp on your right, and you will turn RIGHT onto a gravel road going up the hill. Follow that road and park in the large gravel parking lot. Registration will be at the Administration Building immediately opposite the parking lot. See you there! From the West or South: You ll either be on Highway 92 from Illinois City, or join it about a mile South of the camp. From that junction, where 92 makes almost a 90-degree turn to the north, you ll continue north about a mile to a significant downward slope. About halfway down the slope you ll find the camp s entrance on your left. You will turn LEFT onto a gravel road going up the hill. Follow that road and park in the large gravel parking lot. Registration will be at the Administration Building immediately opposite the parking lot. See you there! 32

34 National Youth Leadership Training June 28 th to July 3 rd, 2015 Camp Loud Thunder The premier training course for Scouting youth worldwide. What is National Youth Leadership Training? (NYLT) The National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for Boy Scouts and Venture Members. The course represents a month in the life of the ideal Scout Troop or Crew. Participants will sleep in tents, prepare their own meals by patrols, and will live and interact by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law. What Is The Purpose of NYLT? To give the Scouts confidence and knowledge to lead their home program. To instruct Scouts in the Eleven Skills of Leadership. To give Scouts the opportunity to work with and learn from other Scouts. 38 Introducing the 2015 CAMP CARD SAMPLE CARD Multi-use offers on back of main Snap off one-time use In response to regular requests for an approved Spring Sales Opportunity, the Illowa Council is pleased to announce a Unit-Wide Fundraiser: CAMP CARDS! The intent of the Camp Card sale is to allow Scout units to raise funds to pay for their Summer Scouting Programs. This includes purchasing camp equipment such as tents and backpacks, and to sending Scouts to Summer or Day Camps. This is also a fantastic opportunity for Webelos and Scouts to raise money to attend the 2017 National Jamboree Camp Cards can be the beginning of an annual fundraising opportunity! This fundraiser is Illowa Council Board approved, and Scouts are welcome and encouraged to sell Camp Cards in their Scout Uniform. Sale Starts: March 21, 2015! We listened to your feedback after the 2015 sale, and this year we again will be offering three unique versions of the Camp Card. Our goal is to have a North card, Central card, and South card with offers that will be attractive to the members of those specific communities. Any Scout can sell any version of the 2015 Camp Card. Detailed information will be released in February. 38

39 WHY SELL CAMP CARDS? The Value of Selling Camp Cards Participating in the Camp Card Sale allows Scouts the opportunity to pay their way to camp! Did you know the average Illowa Council Scout Unit that sold Camp Cards in 2014 made over $1000 in commissions? Wow! Did you know that over $50,000 worth of Illowa Council Camp Cards were sold in 2013 and Scout Units kept over $25,000 in unit commissions? Camp Cards are easy to sell and can really help a Scout Unit gain financial stability. Camp Cards are cool! They helped me pay my way to Summer Camp at Loud Thunder. Commission Camp Cards sell for $5 each. Units earn 50% commission, or $2.50 per card sold if the unit is paid in full by May 6, The cards come in sets of 25 cards. Camp Cards are ordered by the set, but the individual Camp Card can be returned by May 6, Units do not have to pay for ANY cards up front. Return Policy Camp Cards can be returned to the Council Service Center without penalty between March 22 and May 6. The cards MUST be in new condition (including the snap off discounts). NO cards will be accepted for return after May 6, The Illowa Council reserves the right to refuse cards that have been damaged or rendered unsalable. The unit is responsible for any unreturned cards. Be sure Scouts and Parents treat each card as if it were a $5.00 bill. How Do I Get Started? 1) Fill out a Camp Card Commitment Form indicating how many Camp Card sets (25 cards per set) your unit wants. Commitment Forms can be turned in at the Council Service Center. Camp Cards are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 2) Pick up your Camp Cards at your March Roundtable or the Council Service Center starting March 12, Start selling Camp Cards on March 21, ) Bring one unit check by May 6, 2015 * for 50% of what you sold YOU KEEP THE OTHER 50%. Return any unsold cards to the Council Service Center by May 6, *This date aligns with the May Boy Scout Camp Leader s Meeting at Loud Thunder.
