2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement The American Camp Association, New England enriches the lives of children and families through quality camp experiences. ACA New England is the region's leading source for all things summer camp. Background Statement The American Camp Association, New England (ACA New England), a 51(c) 3 organization, serves as the leading source for camp information and resources in New England. We are a community of camp professionals who, for more than 1 years, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. Summer camp began in New England and has a rich history of working with children, youth and young adults. ACA New England fulfills our mission and advances camp excellence by serving as New England's camp experts, providing accurate camp information to the public, administering the American Camp Association Accreditation program, furthering best practices through excellent educational opportunities for camp owners, directors and staff, offering educational programs and assisting families on how to choose a well suited camp and providing camperships that make summer camp experiences possible for New England s most at risk youth. Impact Statement We fulfill our mission and advance camp excellence by: Serving as New England s camp knowledge center and expert for quality camp experiences for families, youth development professionals and the media Providing the most comprehensive and reliable camp related resources in print and online Administering the ACA Accreditation program in New England. The purpose of accreditation is to educate camp owners and directors in the administration of key aspects of the camp operation, particularly those related to program quality, health and safety of campers and staff and risk management Establishing and furthering best practices through excellent educational opportunities for camp owners, directors and staff in fourteen areas of quality camp management Offering educational programs and assisting families on how to choose a well suited camp and on the benefits of a summer camp experience for children Providing camperships that make summer camp experiences possible for New England s most at risk youth. 2
3 Needs Statement Support for children at risk to benefit from a quality camp experience. This includes both actual dollars towards camp tuition as well as support for the administration of this unique program. Our campership program is remarkable in that campers go to all types of camps including day, overnight and travel opportunities that are run by organizations, independent camp owners, foundations and more. Support for outreach educational programs. Camp professionals are experts in many aspects of youth, group and human development. Our goal is to make these opportunities easy and affordable for people who might not usually participate in these types of trainings. New equipment and furniture. Many trainings and classes occur at our office. We hope to add a multimedia system that is accessible to the internet for more modern training opportunities. In addition, we would like to add tables and chairs so participants have a comfortable environment in which to learn. Board members of varying backgrounds. We are interested in expanding our board to include professionals outside of the "camp" community. CEO/Executive Director Statement A quality camp experience provides children and youth with the opportunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character building, skill development and healthy living. Camp is a place where children and youth can stretch their social, emotional, physical and cognitive muscles. Camp teaches critical thinking. Camp embraces the natural environment. Camp creates future leaders. Camp has a lasting impact. We strive to make camp possible for more children and youth. We strive to to advance camp excellence through professional development and accreditation. We strive to help families search for the right camps for their children. Our hope is that every child has the opportunity to benefit from the powerful experience called camp. Service Categories Professional Societies & Associations Geographic Areas Served ACA New England serves all 6 New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut), working with camps, camp professionals, families, media, and allied professionals. 4 Programs ACA New England Public Education & Guidance Description Educate families on the value of the camp experience and how to choose an appropriate summer camp. Provide camp related information to allied professionals, legislators, etc. Budget 35-4 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Youth Development, General/Other Families, Children and Youth ( - 19 years), Familes get the help they need and attend camps that are the right match for them. Correct information about camp is given to all types of people. Determining the number of people we serve via phone, , online etc. Number of media requests for camp related education pieces Examples of Program Success Number of people downloading the Gudie to Camps in New England is higher than ever before Requests from more media outlets for educational information to help families with their camp decisions 4
5 ACA New England Professional Development and Accreditation Description Provide educational experiences that raise the performance bar for directors, staff and other youth work professionals. Administer the American Camp Association accreditation program which educates camp owners and directors in the administration of key aspects of camp operation, particularly those related to health, safety, risk management and welfare of campers and staff. Budget Category Education, General/Other Adult Education Population Served Adults,, Program Short Term Success March 212: provided educational and networking opportunities to almost 9 camp professionals and staff. March - May, 212: trained almost 1 camp staff via our New Camp Directors Workshops. Accredit almost 4 New England Camps with the help of over 2 volunteers. Program Long term Success Camp professionals become aware of trends, best practices, new developments, etc. Help new camp professionals prepare for their season at camp and all the things that go into it. Provide opportunites for camp professionals to network with colleagues and allied professionals. American Camp Association Accreditation Program educates camp owners and directors in the administration of key aspects of the camp operation, particularly those related to program quality, health and safety of campers and staff and risk management. Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Assessing the number of partcipants, the types of participants, the evaluations received from education events. March 212: provided educational and networking opportunities to almost 9 camp professionals and staff. March - May, 212: trained almost 1 camp staff via our New Camp Directors Workshops. 5
6 ACA New England Camperships and Camp Champions Celebration Description Raise funds to send children at risk to camps throughout New England. The Camp Champions annual event celebrates the true spirit of summer camp and the individuals and organizations that help create these special moments. All net proceeds raised support the ACA New England Campership Fund, sending financially qualifying campers to summer camp. Budget 75-1 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Youth Development, General/Other At-Risk Populations, Children and Youth ( - 19 years), Families We held our 1st Camp Champions Celebration in November 211. This summer over 2 children at risk will be able to benefit from a positive camp experience. To date, 1% of the net proceeds raised have supported children's camp attendance. Number of children and families supported through our campership program. Number of volunteers supporting the fundrasing efforts. Examples of Program Success This summer over 2 children at risk will be attending New England Summer Camps. Program Comments CEO Comments Camp offers opportunities for children and youth to rise to their potential while being supported by quality staff and programs.
