1 GUIDE SUMMER 2017 CAMP GUIDE COMPILED BY JENNIFER REILEY AND CAITLIN PERRONE DESIGNED BY CATHY CHEDRAWI Summer break gives students a chance to transition into campers and experience all the region has to offer. Camps provide opportunities to hone athleticism, learn a new skill or participate in outdoor activities. This guide features nearly 50 summer camps available at art schools, churches, day cares, preschools, sports facilities and other locations throughout Austin, and. ACADEMIC Bits, Bytes & Bots Camps include programs in making movies, game creation, programming and coding, electronics, robotics and modifying Minecraft. Camps will take place June 5-9, 12-16, 19-23, and July 5-7, 10-14, 17-21, and July 31-Aug. 4 at Summit Christian Academy in Cedar Park. Camps will be from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Children ages 6-14 are eligible to attend. Camps cost $295 for five-day camps for morning or afternoon sessions. Three-day camps from July 5-7, which run from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., are $345 with discounts available for early registration or additional siblings before March ISD academic camps ISD will host educational camps for students during the summer, though subjects are still to be determined. All camps are open to students within LISD, and some camps are open to students outside of the district. Dates, times, costs and locations are still to be determined Learning Cycle Tutors summer SAT/ ACT courses The courses offer guided SAT/ACT instruction via provided Kaplan Review materials by qualified, advanced-degree tutors. Courses are from 6-8 p.m. twice a week June 5-28 and from 7-9 p.m. twice a week July 10-Aug. 2. The cost per course is $600, and the course is open to incoming 10ththrough 12th-grade students. T-Werx Coworking, 1320 Arrow Point Drive, Ste. 501, Mathnasium of camps Mathnasium will be offering two kinds of camps this summer. Chess camp is open to participants ages 6-14 and will feature National Chess Master Paul Chaplin. These camps aim to offer students an immersive, fun and structured hybrid chess learning environment. The camp will be June 5-9, 19-23, July and Aug Hours will be from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and the cost is $245 per week. Mathnasium is also offering Math and Lego Computer Programming camps for participants age 8 and older. These camps will be offered June 12-16, 26-30, July 17-21, 24-28, July 31-Aug. 4, Aug and The hours will be 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and the cost starts at $299 per week. Mathnasium of, W. Parmer Lane, Ste. 400, WhizBizKids Children and teens can learn about money, how to start a business and gain skills in leadership at interactive, five-day camps at businesses around the Greater Northwest Austin area. Campers will manage their own business throughout the week and have the chance to learn how to use resources wisely and grow their money. Students get to earn and keep real profits. Camps are open to participants ages The five-day camps are from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on June 26-Aug. 18. The cost is $325 per camp plus daily lunch. IHOP, US 183, Austin Pok-e-Jo s, 2121 W. Parmer Lane, Austin Baby Acapulco, 9505 Stonelake Blvd., Austin High 5 Lakeway, 1502 S. RM 620, Lakeway Science Connection Teachers lead the campers through hands-on learning, including Lego robotics, outdoor science and scientific phenomena. Campers receive water bottles, T-shirts and take-home science activities. The camp is open to age 4-fifth-grade graduates. The four-day camps run July 11-Aug. 3 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost is $180 per camp. Peace Lutheran Church, N. RM 620, Austin ARTS & PERFORMANCE ART+ Academy camps In its seventh year, ART + Academy offers halfday drawing and painting camps. Young artists looking to improve drawing and painting skills can choose from classes such as Making Awesome Art with Paper, Painting 101, Let s Draw Cats and Felines and Secrets of Drawing. There is a maximum of 16 students per camp. The camp is open to children ages 5-17 and includes morning camps from 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon camps from 2-5 p.m. June 5-Aug. 11. The cost is $192 per week plus a $28 supply fee. ART + Academy, 3621 E. Whitestone Blvd., Ste. 700, Avery Ranch Dance Discovery Camp instructors teach ballet, drama, stories, jazz, gymnastics, yoga, musical theater and hiphop. Each weekly camp is based on a movie, such as Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Matilda, Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians and The Little Mermaid. Ages vary by camp, but children ages 3-11 can participate throughout the summer. The five-day camps are from June 19-Aug. 11, and camps are from 9:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. The cost for the camps is $150 until April 1. After April 1, the cost increases to $170. There is also a $50 deposit fee. Avery Ranch Dance Discovery, W. Parmer Lane, Bldg. 5, Ste. 505, Center Stage Dance Studio camps Camps include dance intensives as well as training in cheerleading and musical theater. Musical theater camp for age 7 and older is from June A princess-themed camp for ages 4-8 is July 10-14, and a Hawaiian-themed camp for the same age range will be from July There also is a drill team camp for age 9 and older July All camps are from 9 a.m.-noon and cost $150 per week. Consider whether your child would enjoy a specialty camp. It s important to know a child s personality and identify what camp programs will benefit him or her most, said the American Camp Association website. the fundamentals required to create visual art and design. Each concept studied will include an art production activity. Students will take notes, collect ideas, brainstorm and participate in class discussions and critiques. The workshops are open to participants ages 8-13, and the camps run June 5-July 26. The hours are 9 a.m.- noon, and the cost is $125 for three days. There are discounts available for those students who attend multiple camps during the summer. The Studio, 400 W. Whitestone Blvd., Ste. C, Sew True Studio camps The summer camps offer a creative space for students to be introduced to the fundamentals of hand and machine stitching. Students will build on their skills by choosing projects to complete within their abilities, and all supplies are included in the tuition rates. The camp is open to participants ages 8-13 and runs from June through August. Dates, hours and costs are TBD. The Studio, 400 W. Whitestone Blvd., Ste. 2 CONTINUED FROM 39 rehearsals and set design. The program is open to students in kindergarten to those entering sixth grade. The camp is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on June 5-8. It ends with a free performance June 8 at 6:30 p.m. Students must bring their own sack lunches during the camp. The cost is $145 before May 11 and $165 between May High School South Performing Arts Center, 2150 Cypress Creek Muv Dance and Fitness Camps Muv Dance and Fitness Camps include ballet, dance team and an intensive course as well as Mini Muvers for children in kindergarten through third grade. Muv intensive sessions are for students in fourth grade and older and are from 9 a.m.-noon June 5-8. The standard Mini Muvers course is from 9 a.m.-noon June and July Ballet Boot Camp is from 1-5 p.m. for fourth graders and older, and three sessions are offered June 12-15, and July Dance Team Boot Camp, for students in sixth grade and older, is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 19-22, and July The hours change to 9 a.m.-noon for July 31-Aug. 3 with a reduced tuition. Costs range from $160-$285. Muv Dance and Fitness, 2051 Cypress Creek Road, Ste. S, Northwest Spanish School camps The summer program operates Monday through Friday in two-week terms, and summer activities offered at the camp include sportball, art, Spanish, gymnastics, splash day, music and science. The program runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 12-Aug. 4. There are two sessions each day from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Students who are enrolled in both sessions will have time for lunch and to rest. Registration until April 15 is $145, and the cost increases to $205 after April 15. Northwest Spanish School, W. Parmer Lane, Ste Perfect Square Learning Math and Chess Summer Camp The program includes full or half-day sessions and weeklong camps for high-achieving students entering first through fifth grade. Perfect Square Learning is intended to meet the needs of gifted and high-achieving students in Austin and surrounding cities, and camps are tailored to every child s unique academic needs. Sessions are July for students entering third through fifth grade and are offered in half-day segments from 9 a.m.-noon, 1-4 p.m. or all day from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Session 2 is July for students entering first through third grade and is only offered from 9 a.m.- noon. The half-day camp is $175 per child, and the full-day camp is $300 per child The Dirty Easel Fine Arts Camps The Dirty Easel Fine Arts Camps bring art, theater and music together to let children strengthen their creativity. Christiane Michaelis, owner of The Dirty Easel and a certified music and theater teacher, will lead all of the camps. Children will play, explore, and learn at both the indoor and outdoor camps. The camps will take place June 5-9 and June at Kids Kitchen from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Children entering kindergarten through third grade are invited. Camps cost $240 per week. Kids Kitchen, 1514 Dandridge Drive, Think Imagine Write camps During the camps, youths can participate in activities that help them grow as young authors. The camps aim to have children leave with a new appreciation and love of writing. There will be five half-day sessions from June 12-30, and camps are for students going into the fourth through eighth grades. Morning camps are from 9 a.m.-noon, and afternoon sessions are 1:30-4:30 p.m. The cost is $150 per child and includes all supplies, daily snacks and a T-shirt. Think...Imagine...Write, 444 Moorhen Cove, Velocity Music Academy camps The camps teach beginner-level courses on musical instruments, such as guitar, piano and violin, as well as themes such as dance, jazz, rock, singing and songwriting. There are three levels of the program available for children. Preschool Piano Camp, available for ages 4-6, is from June 5-9 and July 31-Aug. 4. The five-day camp is from 9-11:30 a.m., and the cost is $120 plus a $25 fee for materials. Beginning Piano Camp is from June 12-16, July and Aug The five-day camp is from 9 a.m.-noon and is for students age 6 and older. The cost is $170 plus a $15 fee for materials. The Music Sampler Camp is from 9 a.m.-noon June This camp is open to students age 5 and older. The course covers guitar, violin, voice, drums and piano. The cost is $170. Beginning Guitar Camp is from 9 a.m.-noon June The cost is $170. Play Piano by Ear is from 10 a.m.-noon July and costs $170. This course is open to students age 9 and older. Students need to have a general knowledge of how to play the piano. Broadway Camp is July and These classes meet for three days and are available to students age 7 and older. The camp is from 1-2:30 p.m. and costs $170. Beginning violin camp is from 1-3 p.m. July 11 and 13, as well as July 18 and 20. The program is open to students age 5 and older, and the cost is $170. Instrument rental is required for this course. Roadtrip USA will be hosted July and costs $170. Students age 6 and older are invited, and the program will walk students through the history of music in the United States. Velocity Music Academy, 2301 S. Lakeline Blvd., Ste. 200, DAY CAMPS 4Reelz School of Film camps 4Reelz School of Film is offering two summer camps in this summer that cover the art of making comic books and videography using the stop-motion technique. Stop (Motion!) Lego Time is from 9 a.m.-noon and allows students to work in pairs to create a short story, draw it out, and build it with Legos, and then they will bring it to life on film. During each session students will choose a themed Lego kit and use those kits to create their own movie, complete with sound effects and music. Comic Book Creation is from 1-4 p.m. and will explore the history and lore of traditional comic books and card games. Students will then create their own hero and tell their unique stories. This class will be a combination of writing and drawing, and it aims to challenge the students to share their vision through both words and images. Both classes are for students ages 6-13 and will be June and July The cost is $235 per course. Shenandoah Church, 3003 Blue Ridge Drive, Find out if your child would prefer a structured or unstructured camp. Some children, especially when away from home, can benefit from a more structured program with a set schedule. Consistent routines and rules help create order, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s guide, Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers. Things go more smoothly when you and your child know what to expect. Austin Dog Alliance camps All About Puppies and All About Dogs camps include pet lessons, games and crafts. Bring Your Dog to Camp allows participants to bring their own dogs or borrow one from the organization and learn about dog training, dog games and veterinary care. Agility camps and Advanced Dog Sports camps emphasize dog training and tricks. Children with high-functioning autism can participate in separate All About Dogs camps. Camps are split by ages: All About Puppies, ages 5-6; All About Dogs and All About Dogs Autism, ages 7-9; Bring Your Dog to Camp, ages 9-14; Dog Sports Camp Advanced, ages 10-15; and Agility Camp, ages Austin Dog Alliance has fourday camps running June 5-Aug. 10, and times and prices vary by camp. Austin Dog Alliance, 1321 W. New Hope Drive, Bluebonnet STEAM Day Camp Camp instruction at the Bluebonnet School of Cedar Park emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art and math, and campers will also take field trips to various locations. Camps will include outdoor activities and elementary-school-teacher curriculum, and meals and snacks are included in the cost. The camp is open to students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The program is from 6:45 a.m.-6 p.m. and the five-day camps run June 5-Aug. 24. The cost is $249 per week. Bluebonnet School of, 3420 El Salido Parkway, The Brainery camps Stepping Stone School hosts a program, Pioneers and Explorers, that teaches campers about people whose discoveries changed the world, along with their adventures and contributions to mankind. Each camp focuses on a different theme, ranging from flight pioneers to future explorers. The five-day camps are June 5-Aug. 18, and the program is open to children ages 5-13 and lasts from 6:30 a.m.-6:15 p.m. The camp

3 costs $195 per week or $636 per month. Stepping Stone School, 225 Block House Drive, Camp Summit Summit Christian Academy offers 10 weeks of camps, and parents can enroll their children in as many weeks as they choose. The camps include field trips and faith-based activities. Camps are open to participants ages 6-12 and are five-day camps from May 30-July 31. Each program is from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., and the cost ranges from $150- $205 per week, plus a $35 registration fee. Sibling discounts are also available Camp Timberwolf The Parks and Recreation Department hosts Camp Timberwolf, a day camp that is recreational in nature and is not licensed by the state as a certified day care program. The camp offers a variety of activities, such as sports, games, environmental outings, movies, and arts and crafts. The summer day camp will include a field trip each Friday and swimming on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The camp is open to participants ages 5-12, and the five-day camps run June 5-Aug. 25. The hours are 7:15 a.m.-6 p.m. Camps cost $120 a week for residents and $180 a week for nonresidents. Location varies by camp. Recreation Center, 1435 Main St., Children s Lighthouse camps The campers at Children s Lighthouse participate in summer travel-themed activities such as field trips as well as cooking and swimming classes. Camps are weekly from June 5-Aug. 18. Participants in kindergarten-fifth grade are invited, and the camp runs from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. The camp cost is $195 a week for full-time campers, plus $100 to cover all of the field trips. 3. Find out the ratio of staff members to campers. It is important for parents to know how many staff members per child the camp makes available, according to Domjan. Children s Lighthouse, 1801 Bagdad Road, Cornerstone Farm camps Cornerstone Farm campers are taught daily horse-riding lessons and take trail rides as well as learn how to clean, groom, bridle and saddle their horses. Afternoon activities include indoor arts and crafts, and parents are invited at the end of each week to watch the campers ride. The camp is open to participants ages 6-15, and campers are accepted on a case-by-case basis. The five-day camp runs June 5-July 28, times run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and early drop-off and extended care options are available. The camp costs $400 per week. Cornerstone Farm, Old FM 2243, Crystal Challenges camps Children take three field trips each week and complete daily math and reading assignments to earn prizes. Campers also participate in activities, such as art and science projects, face painting, cooking, treasure and scavenger hunts, and swimming. The program is open to participants ages 5-12 years old, and the five-day camps are from June 5-Aug. 25. The hours are 7:45 a.m.- 5:45 p.m., and the cost is $195 per week. Crystal Challenges, 1509 Rhapsody Ridge, Equine Rehabilitation of Central Texas camps ERCT rehabilitates rescued horses and provides a therapeutic riding program called Hopeful Hearts. The organization offers a horse boot camp, in which children with disabilities and their siblings can ride horses each day and also participate in art and music activities. Camps are June and divided into morning 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon 1-4 p.m. sessions. Younger participants work in the morning. Check during registration for age ranges. The cost is $300. Equine Rehabilitation of Central Texas,17000 Trails End Cove, The Goddard School, The Goddard School s summer camp curriculum teaches STEAM subjects science, technology, Austin Dog Alliance engineering, arts and mathematics through daily experiences. Camp lessons include monthly themes. The program is open to students who have completed kindergarten through the fifth grade and costs $219 per week. The five-day camps run from June 5-Aug. 25 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. There also are weekly field trips, visitors, and swimming or splash pad days. Mini-camps are also included each week, and there are also part-time camp options available. The Goddard School, 1905 El Salido Parkway, taylor@riaba.com The Goddard School, Camp lessons include monthly themes, such as drama and theater, astronomy and spies, all incorporating STEAM science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The program is open to students who range from infants-9 years old, and there are five-day camps from June 5-Aug. 25. The hours are 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Cost varies per camp. The Goddard School, 1730 Union St., High Hopes Sport and After School High Hopes offers camps that include a variety of athletic activities as well as field trips. The program combines multi-sport instruction, group games and camp activities. Camps are from June 5-Aug. 25 for participants ages The program runs from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. The cost for full-time camps is $210 per week and $135 for part-time. A half day is $35, and a full day is $49. There is a $50 registration fee. COURTESY AUSTIN DOG ALLIANCE Bluebonnet STEAM Day Camp High Hopes Sport and After School, 1800 Clover Lane, Kiddie Academy of camps Campers participate in activities such as singing, dancing, math, music, science and water play. Meals and field trips are provided. Weekly camps run June 5-Aug. 25 for ages The camp is from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and costs range from $235-$260. Kiddie Academy of, 1602 Medical Parkway, Kids Kitchen camps Kids Kitchen is a cooking school serving children of all ages with classes, workshops and camps to promote food education and creativity in the kitchen. Summer camp themes are designed to spark a child s curiosity and interest in the preparation and enjoyment of healthy foods. The program is open to age 4 and older. The camps run June 5-Aug. 10, and times and the theme change depending on the program. Hours are either 10 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1-4 p.m. Four-day camps cost $230 per week, and five-day camps cost $260 per week. Sibling discounts are also available. Kids R Kids Learning Academy, Avery Ranch Blvd., Austin Kids R Kids Learning Academy, 1301 N. Lakeline Blvd., Parks and Recreation Department camps Jedi Engineering is open to participants ages 5-6. Campers can explore engineering principles by designing and building projects using Lego materials such as X-Wings, R2 Units, Energy Catapults, Defense Turrets and Settlements from a galaxy far, far away. The camp is from 9 a.m.-noon and costs $155. There also is a Jedi Master Engineering program for participants ages Campers can discover key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics and eccentric motion and build projects using Lego materials such as X-Wings, AT-AT walkers, Pod Racers, Star Destroyers, Cloud Cities, Settlements, Fortresses and other complex machines. The program is from 1-4 p.m. and costs $155. Both Jedi courses run June The department also is offering a Junior Golf Camp for ages 5-9. The camp is June 19-23, and it provides professional instruction in full swings, short game, putting, rules, etiquette and safety. The camp is offered from 8-10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Both courses cost $125. There also is a camp for those age 10 older. This camp is from July and is from 8-10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $125 per camp. Camp Curiosity is for ages 7-12 and is from June 26-July 28. The five-day camps intend to teach students to see beyond the obvious, experiment and be creative. Collaboration and inspiration will be accomplished through individual and team efforts with instruction from artist and enrichment Instructor Jennifer Jones. Half-day camps are available from 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. at $100, or full-day camps run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and cost $185. Before and after care is available for an additional fee. The location is TBD. There are also two Minecraft Engineering camps from Aug Participants ages 5-6 will meet from 9 a.m.-noon to create Minecraft objects out of Lego materials. Participants ages 7-12 will meet from 1-4 p.m. for similar activities. The cost for either camp is $ Learning Fun 101 camps In each day of the camp students learn how to use Lego bricks to build and program new projects, such as robots that can sing, dance, navigate mazes, and hit or pitch balls. Camp is open to participants going into kindergarten through seventh grade, and weekly camps are offered June 5-Aug. 11. Location, time and costs vary by camp session. Deerpark Middle School, 8849 Anderson Mill Road, Austin Shenandoah Baptist Church, 3003 Blue Ridge Drive, Primrose School at Vista Ridge camps The school s camps include weekly themes such as science, movies and summer fun. Field trips are planned each week. The five-day camps are from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. June 5-Aug. 25. The camp is open to students in kindergarten-fifth grade, and the cost is $270 per week. Primrose School at Vista Ridge, 910 N. Vista Ridge Blvd., Twin Lakes Family YMCA camps YMCA Camp Twin Lakes attendees can participate in dozens of activities, such as archery, basketball, hiking, kayaking, ropes courses, soccer and swimming. A related program offers the same activities with support for campers with special needs. Specialty camps offer activities such as cooking, dance, first aid and sports. Kinder camps offer summer learning for younger campers. Excursion camps offer outdoor activities and field trips to parks, museums and other attractions. The camps run June 5-Aug. 18 from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. For the Twin Lakes outdoor adventure program, participants entering kindergarten through ninth grade can attend, and the cost is $220 a week for nonmembers and $188 for members. Ages vary by camp. For excursions, the cost is $167 for nonmembers and $157 for members. Children in kindergarten-sixth grade can sign up. For the kinder camps, the hours are 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and the cost is $160 for nonmembers and $110 for members. Specialty camps are from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and cost $160 for nonmembers and $110 for members. Overnight camp is also available, and age ranges and costs vary. There is a $15 charge with all registrations. Twin Lakes Family YMCA, 204 E. Little Elm Trail, ; school sites TBD (excursion camps only) SPORTS All-Star Sports Camps The camps promote teamwork and sportsmanship through healthy competition via sports and active games. Teaching children basic skills and game rules are intended to allow every child the chance to discover new talents and push themselves to refine their natural abilities. Children learn basic sports skills and rules, healthful competition and talent development. The program is open to participants ages 5-14, and the five-day camps run June 5-Aug. 18. A full-day camp is from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and costs $289 per week. The half-day camp is either 8:30 a.m.-noon or 1-4:30 p.m. and costs $189 per week. Discounts are available for siblings or multiple weeks. SoccerZone Lakeline, 920 Old Mill Austin Volleyball Academy camps The academy offers indoor and beach technical skills camps from June 12-Aug. 18 in which students will learn the basic and elite skills of indoor and beach volleyball. Participants ages 9-17 can attend the academy, and the costs range from $60-$300 depending on the camp. Times vary by camp. Hill Country Indoor, Bee Cave Parkway, Austin Westlake Athletic and Community Center, 4300 Westbank Drive, West Lake Hill Hyde Park High School, N. Mopac, Austin Brandy Perryman Shooting Camp BPSC is a four-day basketball camp that include 32 hours of instruction, which is approximately the same amount of time as a month of practice in middle school or a full season of a youth league.
