2 An Extension & Expression of Your Ministry Living Water Ministries serves the world as an expression and extension of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Lower Michigan, and the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. While the programs we offer for people of all ages & backgrounds reach beyond members in affiliated congregations, we also take great care to develop programming that meets the needs of congregations within those church bodies. As an extension & expression of your congregation, we ve set before ourselves the aspiration to transform the world through the grace-filled opportunities we provide to practice service, develop leadership, and experience community! Our goal is to not only have a phenomenal, transformative experience for participants while they are engaged in our program, but also that people return home renewed, equipped, and empowered to bring the Kingdom of God to a world in great need of receiving it. One of the greater misconceptions about what Living Water Ministries provides is that this is a ministry only for children. While youth ministry (primarily through outdoor ministry) is a large part of our portfolio, we also continue to provide experiences for young adults, adults, and multi-generational experiences through our retreat programming. As a resource that receives subsidy from your Synod or Diocese, we invite you to explore the experiences we have created on your behalf. 3 Why Camp? Parents and youth have many options and choices when it comes to summer plans. The benefits of choosing to send a child to summer camp are great. Peg L. Smith, Executive Director of the American Camp Association, argues that kids need camp now more than ever in order to be equipped to handle the challenges of our world. Camp is a lot of fun, but the goals of camp are much more long term than a fun week in the woods. Smith states that, We often think if it looks like fun it must be unimportant, but fun is a young person s work to learn, to grow, to be productive, creative, and happy. If they don t do that work, they won t turn into healthy adults. There also has been research done within faith communities that shows that youth who have been involved with faith-based camping programs are more likely to have lifelong faith commitments and hold leadership roles in their congregations as adults. 5 ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS God s Creation is where campers start off their camp experience at Stony Lake or Michi-Lu-Ca. As we nurture our relationship with the natural word, we deepen our appreciation of all that God has created, including ourselves! Our elementary camps offer a great opportunity to try new camp activities and participate in fun Bible studies, inspirational campfires and worship. First Timers Camp For youth who have completed grades 1-3 First-Timers Camp is a chance for our youngest campers to take a dip into all the camp fun at Michi-Lu-Ca! Campers will enjoy camp activities such as fishing, arts and crafts, nature, swimming & canoeing, special Bible study, worship, and campfires. Camper-to-staff ratios will be higher for this camp than for our other programs and campers will stay in our Birchwood Unit, which features bathrooms in- side of the cabins. Parents and adult leaders will have an opportunity to join in a special closing worship on Wednes- day afternoon. Rate: $230 MLC Elementary Camp For youth who have completed grades 3-6 Campers will learn about God and themselves by exploring the wonders of nature, trying new activities at camp (such as swimming, arts & crafts, and nature walks), and partici- pating in a fun, experiential Bible studies. For an additional fee, campers may go horseback riding at a local Ranch. Elementary campers sing around the campfire, learn about themselves, and worship daily. It will truly be an experience they ll never forget! Rate: $355 MLC SLLC Elementary Horse Camp For youth who have completed grades 3-6 Saddle up and head to camp for a fun filled week of horse- back riding! In addition to the regular activities of Elemen- tary Camp, horse campers go daily to Rainbow Ranch to learn about horses and basic riding techniques. Classes at Rainbow Ranch include content sessions as well as riding sessions. Don t forget the fun you ll have at Stony Lake: swimming, arts & crafts, evening programming, worship, and campfires. 6 JUNIOR HIGH PROGRAMS Community is at the cornerstone of our Junior High Programs. Here, campers can drop the defenses they often carry with them the rest of the year and learn to show God s love to one another and receive that love themselves. Campers become part of building a great camp community through team-building activities, low and high ropes courses, and shared time spent learning more about God and each other. Junior High Camp For youth who have completed grades 6-8 Campers will embark on a week long experience of grace, service, leadership, and community as they learn about themselves, their relationship with God, and their relationships with their peers. Swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, nature walks, low & high ropes challenge course activities, campfires, games, and devotions are all part of this classic camp experience. Bible studies are led by our trained staff who work with campers to grow an understanding of what it means to be a person of faith in today s world. Rate: $355 MLC SLLC Rate: $355 Confirmation Camp For youth who have completed grades 6-8 Youth enrolled in confirmation programs at their local con- gregation are given an opportunity to explore faith issues in an intentional Christian community. Swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, low & high ropes challenge course activities, and singing around the campfire are part of the week-long adventure. Confirmation students attend with their church group and an adult leader who leads their bible study in support of their congregation s confirmation program. MLC SLLC SENIOR HIGH Counselor In Training For youth who have completed grades This is a two week program designed to prepare campers to be future camp counselors. During the training week, CIT participants will learn the fundamentals of being a camp counselor through intentional training sessions designed to explore the basics about caring for and facilitating campers. The second week of the experience will be coordinated with the Camp Director at either facility to serve as a Junior Counselor in a Junior High or Elementary Camp program, shadowing a Camp Counselor and assisting in program facilitation. 7 SENIOR HIGH PROGRAMS Leadership and Service is how we live out our Christian faith. In each of our Senior High Programs campers practice leadership for the church, their communities and beyond. By practicing skills and sharing unique gifts with the camp community, our programs allow campers to see, imagine, and experience their faith in new ways. Campers leave transformed and ready to transform the world! Bridge Builders (Track 1 & 2) For youth who have completed grades 9-12 Formerly know as Leadership Training School, Advanced Leadership Training School, and BRRICK Camp, Bridge Builders is a two track program designed to develop leaders in today s church and world, hone peer ministry skills, and inspire awareness & advocacy in the fight against racism. Bridge Builders Track 1 (or equivalent) is required for attendance in Bridge Builders Track 2, as these two program years intentionally build off of one another. In an ever changing & diverse world, Bridge Builders equips campers to change the world with love for their neighbor. Rate: $355 MLC Rate: $405 Senior High Camp For youth who have completed grades 8-12 Make time for God by making time for Senior High Camp this summer at Stony Lake and Michi-Lu-Ca. Swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, campouts, nature walks, low & high ropes challenge course activities, campfires, games, and devotions are all part of this classic camp experience. Special emphasis will be spent on spiritual growth through service opportunities and small group bible study. Michi-Lu-Ca campers will experience a float trip down the Au Sable River and a camp out. Stony Lake campers will experience a day trip to Michigan s Adventure. MLC SLLC NEW! Au Sable River Senior High Adventure For youth who have completed grades 8-12 Start the adventure with a high ropes challenge and a cook-out at Michi-Lu-Ca. As a group, choose your next adventure: afloat or canoe trip down a few of the 138 miles of the AuSable River. Spend a day hiking along the high bluffs of the river near Oscoda and campout for a night along the river. Learn more about the environment of the Huron National Forest, through which the AuSable passes and which surrounds Michi-Lu-Ca. Get ready for adventure! Rate: $405 MLC Rate: $405 Rock and Roll Camp For youth who have completed grades 8-12 Campers form bands that will gain skills to write music, record music, and have the opportunity to perform for particpants at Bass Lake Festival. Mentors guide each band and skill shops such as poetry & lyrics, music appreciation, and the music biz work to expand the campers creative know-how. Talents of all kinds (from vocalists to sitar) are welcomed! This camp will end on Saturday, July 26th at 11:00 am. 8 SERVICE TRIPS God s Work, Our Hands. Service Trips encourage students to make positive changes in communities through well-rounded volunteer service opportunities that touch areas of poverty, human services, advocacy, and the environment. We believe that by educating young people on social justice issues, engaging them in meaningful service and empowering them to be agents of change, we are fostering a new generation of leaders grounded in the ethic of community involvement in the name of Christ. Chicago This experience is an adventure in service learning with added experiences unique to the great city of Chicago. While in the city, service teams will learn and assist in the ways the Chicago provides resources to the hungry. Opportunities will also be available to work with young children in a day camp and tutoring setting. High School age youth will also have more hands on opportunities with building and painting projects. Participants will transform the world in Christ s name as they serve their neighbors while also experiencing a transformation within themselves through the Holy Spirit. Chicago (Trip 1) June 14-19, 2014 For youth who have completed grades 8-12 Chicago (Trip 2) June 22-27, 2014 For youth who have completed grades 6-12 Detroit We are blessed to be a part of what God is doing in the city of Detroit. Experience the city in a different way as we partner with hope-bringing organizations throughout Detroit. Participants will engage in team building, cross-cultural sensitivity, and service while experiencing the city s unique character and culture. This is a fantastic opportunity for youth from your congregation to familiarize themselves with the city of Detroit prior to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering! Begin rising up this summer! 9 SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. We are honored work with community partners to open up the camp experience to as many people as possible. Our partnership with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan makes possible a unique camping program for children in foster care and a week of family camp for families experiencing homelessness. Our partnership with Angel s Place and other adult foster care facilities makes possible the Outdoor Abundant Life program. These partnerships are where we fully engage our call to minister to people of all ages and backgrounds. Foster Care Program For youth who have completed grades 3-12 in foster care Living Water Ministries has partnered with Lutheran Social Services to offer a special camp experience at Michi-Lu-Ca for children (grades 3-12) who are in foster care. Being away from their family while in foster care is tough on kids and this week of camp provides a safe environment to explore service, leadership and community centered in the grace we receive in Jesus Christ. Contact us today if you know a child in foster care that would benefit from a subsidized week of camp. Donor Subsidized MLC Wayne County Shelter Family Camp For families that reside in the Wayne County Shelter Families experiencing homelessness that are residing in the Wayne County Shelter are given an opportunity to experience Family Camp at Michi-Lu-Ca through the generous support of donors! This program is in partnership with Lutheran Social Services in Michigan. Families experience the love of Christ through classic camp games, swimming, hiking, fishing, campfires, and more! Donor Subsidized MLC Outdoor Abundant Life For adults with developmental disabilities A fantastic experience at Michi-Lu-Ca for adults with developmental disabilities designed to develop faith, social skills, friendships, and relationship with God s creation. Campers of all ages who are cognitively impaired but still ambulatory will live in an intentional camp community with their peers and experienced counselors. The week will explore relationships with Christ and each other through fun camp experiences including, singing, short hikes, shallow swimming, talent shows, dances, camp olympics and more. TAILORED WEEKS FOR Episcopalians: July 6-11, 2014 and July 13-18, 2014 at Michi-Lu-Ca While we welcome Episcopalians any week of camp at any of our locations, July 6-11, 2014 and July 13-18, 2014 at Michi-Lu-Ca are especially EDOMI-friendly. Several priests and adult leaders from the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan (EDOMI) have committed to being present these weeks to lead Bible Study for junior high campers and to be a pastoral presence for all Episcopalian campers. Other EDOMI priests and adult leaders are also welcome and encouraged to come with their campers! These weeks in particular, your youth will get to know others from EDOMI, the two Lutheran (ELCA) synods in Lower Michigan and beyond!

11 The Convenience of On-Line Registration Living Water Ministries now offers on-line registration for most of our summer programs. On-line registration makes it extremely convenient for the parents of campers to sign up their child and fill out the required paperwork (health forms, waivers, etc) prior to their arrival at camp. It also makes check-in on the day of arrival run more smoothly if campers have submitted their paperwork on-line prior to arrival. If your congregation is sending children as a group with a group leader, here s some important information for you to know and share with your parents. 1) Parents/legal guardians must sign up their own children. Parents/legal guardians must create an account and sign up their child themselves. 2) Our system remembers returning campers & their information! If parents/legal guardians are signing up a returning camper that previously utilized on-line registration, a majority of their information will automatically populate the forms. (they must login with the same user account they previously created as the system will recognize them by their address) 3) Keep each registration connected to you and your congregation! When filling out the camp application for their child, parents will be prompted to select their congregation from a drop down menu, and will be prompted to enter the name and address of the primary adult leader accompanying the group from your church to camp. With this information, we ll be able to keep you in the loop when we communicate to parents prior to the camp week. 4) Make sure parents/legal guardians know which camp, program, and the dates you wish to attend with your group. When filling out the camp application, they will need to know which camp (Michi-Lu-Ca, Stony Lake, or Road Trip Adventures) your group is attending, the name of the program (ex. Confirmation Camp), and the dates you wish your group to attend. 5) A non-refundable deposit of $ secures the discount rate. In previous years, full payment by March 15th was required to reap the benefit of our discount rate. In 2014 we only require that the non-refundable deposit of $ be made by March 15th to secure the discount. Payments received after March 15th will be at the full rate. 6) There are a variety of payment options! Once each parent has completed the application for their child they will be prompted to select a preference for payment method. They can select to pay by check, credit card, or defer their payment to a group or church that is assisting them with tuition expenses. A non-refundable deposit by March 15th is required to receive the discount rate. Payment options for the remaining balance are flexible and can fit the needs of your group or church. 7) We can run registration reports for your church! Our registrar can provide reports for congregations wishing to keep tabs on the progress of their group s registrations. Simply contact our office at or via us at office@elcalivingwater.com and we ll be happy to send you a report. $ 35 DISCOUNT Register by March 15, 2014 and place a $100 non-refundable deposit to receive a $35 discount on the registration price! Refer-A-Friend We want as many children as possible to have access to the camp experience. Each camp family can help! Simply encourage parents to login to the parent account they created when they registered their child and choose Refer-a-Friend. If their referral registers their child, we ll credit the child s camp store account $20 and their referral s camp store account $10. Offer only applies to new campers to Living Water Ministries. ADULT LEADER REGISTRATION Adult leaders register by downloading and submitting a paper form along with their required screening forms. The first adult leader for your group is free. 12 Two Sites, One Vision Each of the two sites offer unique benefits to groups and individuals. Some churches are committed to attending one of the camps while others choose to switch every other year or have youth decide which one they d like to attend. Stony Lake With Stony Lake s compact size (16 acres), you will be sure to see your group often! There are a lot of opportunities for interactions between the different age groups but also time to be apart in Bible study and cabin times. Elementary Horse Camp takes advantage of the great relationship with the stables down the road to offer a unique experience for the youngest campers, while Senior High groups have the opportunity to travel to Michigan Adventure for a day. Adult Leaders stay in the White House, a large house on the property, and eat at the dining hall with campers. Michi-Lu-Ca At Michi-Lu-Ca, we make use of the beauty of our 360 acres, 4 lakes, 3 camper units, and miles of hiking trails. Most weeks, campers are separated into the different units by age groups and come together as a camp community for worship, afternoon activities, camp-wide games, and waterfront time. Junior and Senior High programs have an optional canoe trip on the nearby AuSable River and Elementary and Junior High programs have an optional trip to a nearby horse ranch to ride. Adult Leaders stay in our retreat house (Tri-Level), the Birchwood Cabins, or the Red Pine Dorms and may eat with campers at a unit of their choice. We re Hiring Summer Staff! Our staff members are primarily college-aged young adults who are leaders in the church and in other settings. They are passionate about working with kids and serving at camp. Camp staff undergo an intensive two week training period prior to the arrival of campers. During that time, they are given skills necessary to provide for the physical, emotional and spiritual safety of your campers. If you know of any young adults who would make excellent counselors, kitchen helpers or maintenance assistants, encourage them to visit our website for an application for this summer! Working at camp is often a very transformative experience in one s faith journey. 13 DAY CAMP A Service to Your Community. Day Camp is an opportunity for you to bring the spirit of camp to your congregation and community for a week during the summer! By providing this week long experience for young children from your church and community, you provide a safe environment for families to engage the gospel daily in ways that are fun, educational, and transformative. Day Camp For youth who have are ages 5-12 An energetic staff of young adults, trained by Living Water Ministries, delivers a fun, community-centered program focused on sharing God s love and forgiveness to youth ages 5-12 in your congregation and community. Living Water Ministries will collaborate with your congregation to tailor the experience to your needs. We will coordinate with you to provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone. We will provide all supplies and programming for Bible study, arts and crafts, recreation, music, worship, nature activities and other special activities. Congregations provide host families & meals for staff, extra volunteers as needed, and on the ground support. Day Camps are generally held Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm and offer a wonderful way to reach out to new young people and families in your community as well as encourage children in your own congregation to grow deeper in their faith during the summer. Many congregations also use day camps as an opportunity for older youth in their congregation to gain leadership experience as volunteer junior counselors, assisting alongside Living Water Ministries staff. Some congregations take on the full cost of the program and offer day camp free to campers while others have campers pay a fee to help cover the cost of the program to the church. 15 MEAL PLANS AVAILABLE! Bass Lake participants may purchase meal plans from Michi-Lu-Ca for an additional fee of $50 per person when they register. BASS LAKE FESTIVAL Faith, Music, and God s Creation. Bass Lake Festival is a Christian Festival for high school aged youth which provides an outside the box, grace-filled experience of the Christian faith. Through great music, unique learning opportunities, and a relaxed community-building atmosphere, this event shares the Gospel with youth from all backgrounds in a beautiful outdoor setting. $ 85 if registered by June 25th $ 110 if registered after June 25th July 25-28, 2014 at Michi-Lu-Ca To learn more please visit: THE GATHERING Serve and Lead in the Name of Christ. The Gathering is an opportunity for groups of high school aged youth to experience four days of service, leadership and community. 17 Be still and know. Camp is unique place that has much to offer beyond the summer season. Retreating at Michi-Lu-Ca or Stony Lake is a pilgrimage to one of the great treasures that God has entrusted to churches in Michigan. All of our retreats offer the opportunity to participate in a Christian community founded in Grace, to work together in service to others and to grow into your gifts of leadership. We offer these in the unparalleled beauty of Michi-Lu-Ca and Stony Lake Lutheran Camp. The solace of God s forests is not only for the summer, come journey with us the in the fall, winter and spring as well! Unless otherwise indicated, retreat fees include housing, programming, and Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch. Young Adult Discernment Retreat A pilgrimage is defined as a journey where the path and practice of travel are more important than the destination. On this weekend for young adults we will journey together through questions of call, purpose and the individuals God has called us to be. There will also be time to explore Michi-Lu-Ca in the winter; a side of camp few get to see! Laura Book from Trinity Seminary will help guide discussions as you discern God s role in your daily life and who you are called to be as a Christian in today s world. 18 Family Fishing Retreat Join us for a weekend of worship, fellowship and fishing. This will be a time for young people and their elders to connect and reconnect over the simple joy of fishing. Retreaters will benefit from the experience and wisdom of local fishing legend George Connor. This weekend will include open time for fishing as well as programming designed to lead young people, and the adults who came with them, into deeper relationship. We ask that all young participants come with an adult who is committed to them. 19 Women s Retreat Enjoy the beginning of fall colors at Michi-Lu-Ca and the company of faithful women as we reflect on and try out spiritual practices that draw us closer to God and one another. Lots of relaxation and choose- your-own adventure time is built into this retreat as well! Enjoy a break and refresh yourself with other disciples called to strengthen the faith of youth in our churches. Meals for this retreat will include Friday breakfast through Saturday lunch.
