During haymaking, those who cut the grass have to wake up very early and work until the dew gets dry. Then, the grass has to be returned with rakes, loaded on a car (using pitchfork) and transported to farmers. It is recommended to wear solid

shoes, long sleeves and pants to avoid scratches from the hay. It is necessary to have a hat to be protected from sun. The meadows can be very wet so bring waterproof working shoes (or rubber boots) and rain-gear. Be aware that scythe is a dangerous tool and has to be handled cautiously (there will be a technical supervisor to teach you). Study part: Lecture by a scholar from Masaryk University in Brno on the location, reasons for its protection and species that can be found there is planned. We can also arrange a beekeeping or a herbal workshop since Zitkova is very rich for healing herbs and famous for their collection. It is planned to visit Trencin (city in Slovakia). Leisure time: Hiking in the surrounding hills, swimming in a nearby pond (2 km), playing badminton and volleyball, collecting mushrooms and herbs, singing or playing music (ukulele, guitar), etc. Bring your musical instrument if you have any! Accommodation/Food: In tents. At the campsite there is also on old barn that is used as a kitchen, dining and common room. The nights can be very cold so bring a warm sleeping bag, sleeping mat and warm clothes. You will wash yourself in a cold stream next to the campsite and you ll use dry toilets. You will prepare your own meals taking turns in kitchen services, the barn. Location: Natural reserve Hutě in White Carpathian Mountains close to Žítková village (170 inhabitants), South-East Moravia. The campsite is remote, located 2 km from the village and bus station. There is no wi-fi and the mobile signal is scarce. Meeting point: Stare Mesto u Uherskeho Hradiste railway station. The meeting time is usually in the afternoon. Please note that it takes more than 3 hours to get there from Prague by public transport. The exact information will be provided in the infosheet. Requirements: The camp is suitable for volunteers who are not afraid of living and working in rougher conditions in close contact with nature. It is not recommended to people allergic to grasses (hay fever), wasp or bee stings. Note: This project is realized with the support of Johnson Controls. SDA 406 Eco Centre Horni Marsov 13/08 27/ ENVI/RENO Vols: team leaders Age: Project: The workcamp takes place in a small town of Horni Marsov situated in the Krkonose (Giant) Mountains in cooperation with the local NGO Centre for environmental education and ethics SEVER. SEVER is focused on environmental education and the promotion of responsible behavior towards nature and among people themselves. They cooperate with schools and organize programs for students and teachers. They organize educational and cultural events for the public. The aim of the workcamp is to renovate a residential centre in the local school used by SEVER for environmental programs and to get to know the sustainable way of living. Work: Volunteers will mainly help with the renovation of the residential centre. This will involve tasks such as painting walls, brushing and painting of furniture, window ledges, handrails, etc. All the necessary work tools including gloves will be provided. We recommend volunteers to bring old clothes that can get dirty by paint. Some work tasks will also include activities around the eco-centre TOUCH physically demanding work with wood (cutting and moving) and less demanding work in the natural garden (weeding, mulching). Study part: Presentation of the organization SEVER (what they do to be sustainable), possibility to try environmental education programs for students, cooking evenings (local and international meals), excursion into the Krkonose National Park)

Leisure time: Hiking in the beautiful Krkonose National Park, visiting other interesting sights (Trutnov, Arspach-Teplice rocks, etc.), using outdoor fireplace, borrowing materials for creative workshops. Accomodation/Food: in the residential center at the school. There will be 2 rooms with beds available, WC, bathroom, common room and a small kitchen. Please bring your own sleeping bags! You will prepare your own meals (mainly breakfasts and dinners) in the kitchen of the residential centre. Some lunches will be provided in the canteen of the eco-centre TOUCH. The canteen operates for all the staff of the eco-centre. Location: North-eastern part of Bohemia, near the border on Poland. The town of Horni Marsov has around 1000 inhabitants and is located near the Krkonose National Park. Krkonose are the highest mountains in the Czech Republic and very attractive for hiking. Volunteers will work in two places the eco-centre TOUCH (seat of the organization) and the residential centre (in the local school). Both places are within 5 minutes of walk. The area has a bit colder climate even in summer and a beautiful nature. Meeting point: Horni Marsov. The meeting time is usually in the afternoon. Please note it takes at least 3 hours to get there from Prague. The exact information will be provided in the infosheet. Requirements: We are looking for volunteers who like nature and are eager to learn how to be more sustainable. The local partner would like to show volunteers how to act sustainably (sorting out waste, cooking with local and bio products no palm oil or fried food). Note: This workcamp is sponsored by Johnson Controls. SDA 407 Teens in green world 14/08 27/ ENVI Vols: team leaders Age: TEEN, Parental authorization, medical form Project: The workcamp is organized in cooperation with the local NGO Cmelak - Friends of Nature Society whose activities are focused on the support of a sustainable way of life, practical nature protection and environmental education. They transform environmentally damaged and abandoned areas into locations that are attractive for both people and the nature. In one area of the Jizera Mountains they create a New Virgin Forest a location where unnatural spruce tree monoculture is being replaced by seedlings of original trees. In another area, they maintain wetlands. The goal of the workcamp is to help with practical nature protection in several different locations that Cmelak is in charge of (both forests and wetlands). Cmelak has organized so far 13 adult and 1 teenage workcamps. Work: There are 2 different types of work to be done (both are quite physically demanding): 1) work in the forestlands (weeding small trees in the forest, planting of seedlings, work in the tree nurseries including preparation and weeding of beds) and cutting grass in Temna street; 2) maintenance in the wetlands (pulling up the typha, cutting grass, cutting reed followed by raking; removing of reed and other plants from water pools; cutting out of wood; possibly also collection of garbage). Be ready to work outdoors, in wet areas, under all types of weather (rain, wind). Waterproof clothes with long sleeves and long trousers, a raincoat and rubber boots are necessary. These clothes will protect you against insects or some plants. Study part: There are some field excursions planned for volunteers to get to know the locations where they are going to work, to understand why their work is needed and beneficial. There will also be an intercultural event organized together with the local community (as a gathering with some nice food). Bring some materials from your country (e.g. photos, music, recipes). Leisure time: You can go hiking in the beautiful surrounding landscape, visit castles and climb the Jested the highest peak in the region. The city of Liberec, where you will be ac-

commodated, offers many possibilities to enjoy culture. A weekend trip to Bohemian Paradise or Jizera Mountains is possible. Accommodation/Food: 1st week: basic accommodation in the Scouts base Hanychov, Liberec. It includes 3 bedrooms, common room, kitchen, bathroom. Bring your own sleeping bag! 2nd week: Foster care home in the castle Novy Falkenburk, Jablonne v Podjestedi. There are 2 bedrooms, a common room, bathroom with showers, kitchen. You will prepare your meals and you will bring lunch to the workplace. Bring a lunchbox with you. Location: Liberec and other areas of the Jizera Mountains in the north of Bohemia. You will use mini-buses to get to the place of work in the surrounding forests. Liberec is a regional capital with a population over 100,000. It is famous for its surrounding mountains that are easily accessible. Meeting point: Liberec train or bus station. The meeting time is usually in the afternoon. Please note it takes 1,5 hour to get there from Prague city centre. The exact information will be provided in the infosheet. Requirements: Parental authorization and medical form is strictly required! The forms will be provided after the acceptance to the workcamp. We are looking for volunteers who like nature and are eager to learn new thing about nature protection. Information for allergic people a lot of time will be spent outdoors so you can get into contact with herbs, pollen, insects. In case of doubts, please contact us. Note: This project is realized with the support of Johnson Controls. For pictures of the accomodations see: and SDA 408 Back to nature 20/08 08/ ENVI Vols: team leaders Age: 18+ Project: The workcamp is organized in co-operation with the Czech national section of EU- ROSOLAR. The NGO is dealing with the promotion of renewable energies, providing information on the costs and risks of nuclear energy and environmental education of youth. It takes place in an abandoned but exceptionally beautiful, hilly area of Bohemian Forest, near the western border of the Czech Republic. The campsite is totally isolated from civilization (the nearest Czech village is 11 km away) and we welcome volunteers that are fond of trying out a basic life within nature and do not mind longer walks. This year the workcamp will be organised for 18th time! The goal is to help cutting meadows in the nature protected area and to support the organization of a forest festival for about 150 participants. Work: You will work in a nature reserve about 5 km from the campsite (you will have to walk there on foot or use bicycles there will be 2 bikes available, if you can take one, it will be very useful). The main work can consist of cutting grass on protected meadows, raking grass, collecting biomass and building of a protective fence. This work is physically demanding. As the meadows can be very wet, bring waterproof working shoes (or rubber boots), rain-gear and gloves. You will also work directly in the campsite on maintenance tasks which can include preparing wood, cleaning the surrounding area, liquidating invasive plants, packaging of a camp and similar manual work. For the festival ( ) you will be asked to help with cooking, preparing wood, ongoing cleaning and supervising the rules. Study part: Evening discussions about ecological topics, learning to recognize stars, watching wild animals. A visit of nature reservations in the neighbourhood can be planned. As you are living in close contact with the nature you will improve your camping skills as well. Leisure time: Hiking in the surrounding nature. Trips to Czech towns in the neighbourhood and as the project is situated directly at the border on Germany, a trip to Germany can be

included as well. In the free afternoons, you can play games, have indian sauna, try out artistic work with wood and archery. Accommodation/Food: In tee-pees (Indian tents with a fireplace in the middle) on wooden pads. You will cook for yourself on fireplace. The food is ONLY vegetarian. Nights in the forest are very cold even frosty so bring a very warm sleeping bag, a sleeping mat and an extra blanket or a cover for a hey-mattress. You will wash yourself in a stream with cold water next to the camp, toilets are outdoor and dry. Location: GPS coordinates: 49 43'11" N, 12 26'19" E, campsite at the valley of Celni stream, an isolated part of the village of Lesna in the Bohemian Forest. The nearest bus stop is Stara Knizeci Hut and the nearest bigger town is Tachov. Meeting point: Stara Knizeci Hut, part of the village Lesna. The public transport to Stara Knizeci Hut during summer holidays is very limited there is only ONE connection from Prague on 20th August starting with a train from Prague train station at 8:12 a.m. and arriving at Stara Knizeci Hut at 13:30 so it is strongly recommended to arrive in Prague one day before the start of the workcamp to make it on time. Detailed travel advice will be provided in the infosheet. Requirements: The camp is suitable for volunteers who are not afraid of living and working in harder conditions in close contact with nature. If you are ready for this, it can be an amazing experience. It is not a suitable project if you are allergic for hay. Be aware of the fact that consumption of meat and alcohol in the camp is forbidden.
