2 2 field trip checklist o 3 Checklist Before your visit... Reservation Confirmation Review your confirmation letter to verify accuracy. This is especially important for giant screen films and instructor-led programs, as seating is limited and may sell out. Deposit Your deposit is required to hold your trip and must be received at least two weeks prior to your scheduled visit. If the deposit is not received on time, your reservation could be cancelled. Please see page 4 for more information. Changes If you need to change the date of your field trip or program time/date, please contact us as soon as possible. The first change to your itinerary is free; subsequent changes are $25 each. Tax Exemption Georgia public schools and accredited private schools located in Georgia may qualify for tax exemption. For each reservation, schools should submit a copy of their Tax Exemption Letter from the State of Georgia Department of Revenue prior to arrival. Payments by personal check, personal credit card or cash are not tax exempt. GPS Correlations Download GPS-correlated activities for your field trip. See page 13 for more information. If time doesn t permit, you may pre-order Nature Packs. See page 7 for details. Chaperones Divide your students into chaperoned groups with a minimum of one chaperone for every 10 students. 3 3 field trip checklist o 3 Checklist On the day of your visit Status If you have not yet confirmed the final number of students, chaperones and bus drivers in your group with the Field Trip Team, please call before you leave your school. Please leave a message if calling before 9:30am. Final Payment Final payment by cash, school check or school credit card is due upon arrival. Please adjust your payment according to the number of attendees. Only schools that have submitted their Georgia Tax Exemption letter will receive sales tax exemption. Share Parking Information Share the unloading and parking procedures found on page 6 with all bus drivers. Check In Allow 30 minutes for check-in prior to the start of your first activity. Giant screen films and instructor-led programs must begin at their published start times. Upon arrival, the group leader must check in at the ticketing counter. Please allow the rest of your group to remain on the bus during the check-in process to avoid congestion in the lobby. Group Leader The group leader will need the final group headcount; reservation confirmation number; and cash, check or credit card for payment. All persons not included in the reservation must pay the individual ticket rate on a spaceavailable basis. Adjustments may not be made once a reservation is complete. Lunches Lunches may be stored on the buses or under the staircases on the Lower Level of the Museum. School groups may eat on the front lawn, on the Dinosaur Plaza, on the Terrace or in the Great Hall. Lophorothon Bryant Upchurch. Nautilus Fernbank Museum. Boy Boris Giant Screen Films If you are scheduled to see a giant screen film, we will begin seating your group in the Giant Screen Theater 10 minutes prior to your scheduled show time. Groups will enter the Theater through The Star Gallery entrance, located on the Lower Level, unless otherwise instructed by greeters. School Programs Groups with an instructor-led program should wait for their instructor at the designated location 10 minutes prior to the program start time. Groups with indoor programs will meet under the dinosaurs in the Great Hall. Groups with outdoor programs will meet at the Kendeda Pavilion located in WildWoods. Ensure a smooth field trip by reviewing the policies on the following page!

4 4 field trip policies Please inform all educators and chaperones of these guidelines as well as your schedule of events for the day. Deposits, Cancellations, & Refunds A 50% deposit is required two weeks prior to the day of your field trip. Your deposit is fully refundable if the trip is cancelled at least one week in advance. Trips cancelled less than one week from the reservation date are subject to forfeiture of deposit. Your deposit will be applied to your total balance, and the remaining balance will be due upon arrival. If the deposit deadline cannot be met, you must call to speak with a Field Trip Team member for further options. If scheduling within two weeks of arrival, your deposit is due at the time of booking. Overpayment made by check will be returned to the school by mail within 4 to 6 weeks. Payments made by credit card will be refunded directly to the card used for initial payment. If both check and credit card are used to make payments, the school s bookkeeper will be contacted for instructions on refund preference. Late Arrivals If your group will arrive late, please notify us by calling or Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your first activity to allow adequate time for check-in. Giant screen films and educator-led programs must begin at the published start time. To prevent disruption to other visitors, as well as for safety precautions in the theater, groups will not be seated after the film has begun. If your group arrives late and misses the scheduled film, we will be happy to seat your group in the next show if seats are available. Regardless of seat availability, you will be responsible for the entire balance due. Chaperones Students, Pre-K through 12th grade, MUST be accompanied by a chaperone at ALL times. The Museum is self-guided and should be led by your chaperones. We require a minimum of one chaperone for every 10 students. Students without chaperones will be asked to wait before entering the exhibits, Giant Screen Theater and Museum Store until the assigned chaperone is located. Group Wristband Policy All students, educators, chaperones and bus drivers are required to wear wristbands during their entire visit. Wristbands will be distributed to the group leader at check-in. The group leader is responsible for making sure he/she receives the correct number of wristbands at check-in. Behavior Educators and chaperones are responsible for the behavior of their students at all times while visiting the Museum. We reserve the right to ask any disorderly member(s) of your group to leave the building. Under this circumstance, refunds will not be granted. Your school is responsible for any damage to Museum property while your students are on the field trip. Please ask students to refrain from running or yelling, and to respect the no touching policies in place within certain exhibits and Museum areas. Students must refrain from using skateboards, roller-skates, Heelys while in the Museum and on the Museum campus. We reserve the right to decline visitation to unruly groups. NatureQuest Group Access NatureQuest is available to chaperoned students in Pre-K 4th grade. Access to the exhibit is on a space-available, first-come, first-served basis, and is not guaranteed. Check in at the NatureQuest entrance upon arrival for availability and guidelines. WildWoods Group Access WildWoods outdoor exhibitions are available to chaperoned students. Access to the exhibits is on a space available, first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed. Nature Stories is for Pre-K 3rd grade students and Adventure Outpost is for 4 6th graders. See page 5 for a full list of group polices. Elevator Please use the elevator only in cases of physical need or to transport lunches so guests who require the assistance of the elevator may use it in a timely manner. Photography Photography is welcome in the Museum but is not permitted in the Giant Screen Theater. Certain exhibitions may prohibit photography and will be marked. Please refer to signs before taking any photos. Smoking Policy Fernbank is a nicotine-free campus. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not allowed on or around the Museum campus and parking lots.

5 5 outdoor guidelines Here are helpful tips for exploring the great outdoors at Fernbank Museum with your school group. l Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a chaperone. A minimum of 1 chaperone for every 10 students is required. l Outdoor exhibits and pathways are open rain or shine but may be closed in the event of dangerous conditions. Please plan and dress appropriately for the weather. l All guests are encouraged to apply sunscreen, use insect repellent and bring water. l Enjoy meals on the terrace or in the café and not in WildWoods or Fernbank Forest. l There are no restrooms, water or trash facilities in Fernbank Forest. Groups are encouraged to plan accordingly. Restrooms are available inside the Museum and at the Kendeda Pavilion located in WildWoods. l Dispose of waste and recyclables in proper receptacles inside the Museum. All items carried outdoors in both WildWoods and Fernbank Forest must be carried back with your group. l The natural world is home to stinging insects, poison ivy and snakes. For your safety, please stay on trails. If participating in a guided outdoor program, alert Museum instructor of severe allergies to poison ivy and/or stinging insects. Do not wade or swim in water features. l Fernbank Forest closes at 4:30pm, and the Museum closes at 5pm. Please plan your visit accordingly. It takes minutes to walk directly from the Fernbank Forest gate to the Museum terrace.

6 6 directions and bus driver information Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road, NE, just a few miles east of Midtown Atlanta at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Clifton Road. See below for more detailed directions. From the North Go south on I-75/I-85/GA400 to downtown Atlanta. Take exit 248C Freedom Parkway (GA 10 East). Go 1.7 miles to Ponce de Leon Avenue and turn right. Go 1.7 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From the South Go north on I-75/I-85 to downtown Atlanta. Take exit 248C Freedom Parkway (GA 10 East). Go 1.7 miles to Ponce de Leon Avenue and turn right. Go 1.7 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From the East Take I-20 west to Moreland Avenue (exit 60) and turn right. Continue on Moreland Avenue 1.8 miles and turn right onto Ponce de Leon Avenue. Go 1.1 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From the West Take I-20 east to exit 57 (I-75/I-85 North). Take exit 248C Freedom Parkway (GA 10 East). Go 1.7 miles to Ponce de Leon Avenue and turn right. Go 1.7 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From Downtown Go north on Peachtree Street to Ponce de Leon Avenue and turn right. Go 3.3 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From Buckhead Go south on Peachtree Road to Ponce de Leon Avenue and turn left. Go 3.3 miles to Clifton Road and turn left. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. From Stone Mountain Go west on Highway 78 and merge onto Lawrenceville Highway (GA 29). Note: This road changes names several times and will eventually become Ponce de Leon Avenue. Once you reach an arched stone overpass, go 1 mile to Clifton Road and turn right. Go 1/10 mile to the Museum entrance and turn right. Parking/Bus Driver Information A B Buses must drop off and pick up students at the side of the building. Please do not idle at the curb, double park, or block the handicap spaces. (See map.) Free bus parking is available in the outer parking lot (P1). LUNCH INFORMATION There are two options for enjoying lunch at Fernbank: Bring Your Own: You are welcome to bring your own lunch to the Museum. Lunches can be stored under the staircases in the Great Hall or on the buses. For safety reasons, please use the elevator to transport your food. Please notify Security when you are ready to eat so trash cans can be made available. All lunches should be disposed of properly. Groups are responsible for their own food quality. Fernbank does not supply additional coolers or food prep areas. Order from the Café:* The Fernbank Café offers lunches for your group, featuring a 1 oz. bag of chips, a small cookie, a drink (soda, milk, bottled water or juice box), and a sandwich, hot dog or slice of pizza. Simply fill out the Lunch and Souvenir Order Form (page 14) and fax to or scan and to fieldtrips@fernbankmuseum.org at least two weeks prior to your scheduled visit. Lunches are $6.50 (plus tax). A final count is due 24 hours prior to your visit and cannot be changed thereafter. Be sure to include chaperone and bus driver lunches in your total. Please notify us of food allergies. Your group may enjoy lunch on the front lawn, the Dinosaur Plaza, the Terrace or in the Great Hall. We ask that you do NOT eat on the steps inside or outside the Museum, on the Giants of the Mesozoic exhibit, in The Fernbank Café, in WildWoods, or in Fernbank Forest. If you forget your lunches and have not made prior arrangements, please ask about the emergency on-site lunch option. * Fernbank Museum can cater up to 500 school lunches per day. If the maximum number of lunches has been sold when you make reservations, students will need to bring lunch. To pick up pre-ordered lunches, the group leader should report to The Fernbank Café. Lunches will be delivered to you in the Great Hall, where chaperones are responsible for distributing lunches to the students. MUSEUM STORE Education continues in the Museum Stores! It s a great opportunity for a lesson on money, taxes and decisionmaking skills. It also gives students a chance see more fossil and gem specimens. Students of all ages are welcome to shop the main Museum Store (Entry Level) and the Special Exhibition Store** (Lower Level). A wide variety of fun and educational items are available for purchase including dinosaur figures, fossils, magnifiers, prisms and more. Prices start as low as $0.25. The stores also feature a variety of science- and natural historythemed books, posters and DVDs, providing a great opportunity to continue the Museum experience in the classroom. To ensure a pleasant shopping experience for everyone, chaperones must accompany students in the stores with no more than 30 students in the store at once. Students should exit the store after completing their purchase. Pre-Order Souvenirs: No time to shop? Pre-order Nature Packs for just $3 each! Nature Packs include items most appropriate for pre-k through elementary students and may include pencils, note pads and animal figures (actual contents vary). You must preorder Nature Packs at least two weeks prior to your field trip, and you can pick up Nature Packs from the store at the end of your visit. To order, fill out the Lunch and Souvenir Order Form (page 14) and fax to or scan and to fieldtrips@fernbankmuseum.org. **Available only during special exhibitions.

For more guidelines regarding student lunches, see page 7. l The Francis Wood Wilson Foundation Theater and Kendeda Pavilion are reserved for groups that have booked a program. Groups with an indoor program should wait for their instructor under the dinosaurs on the Great Hall floor 10 minutes prior to the program start time.* See page 11 for information on outdoor programs. l The Giant Screen Theater requires a separate reservation. Groups with a film reservation should meet at the theater entrance, located within The Star Gallery, 10 minutes prior to the start of their film.* * Please note: Instructor-led programs and giant screen films must begin at the published start time, so late seating is not available.

It takes minutes to walk from the Fernbank Forest gate to the Museum terrace. l Experiences inside the Museum and within WildWoods are ADA accessible. However, due to the natural terrain of Fernbank Forest, some areas include steep inclines, rugged features and unpaved trails. l Guests are required to stay on marked pathways to protect natural habitats. Do not wade or swim in water features.

13 13 curriculum resources Enhance your students learning experience by incorporating GPS-correlated activities and guides into your field trip. Exhibit Guides and Activities Below are examples of the curriculum-correlated activities available on our website. These materials are available to you free of charge on the field trip section of. If you have difficulty downloading these materials, please call to have a copy faxed, ed or mailed to you. A Walk Through Time in Georgia Scavenger Hunt and GPS Correlations All grades: The activity pages focus on the seven Georgia regions and habitats featured in Fernbank s signature exhibition. Age-appropriate questions are correlated to Georgia Performance Standards and engage students as they explore the scientific concepts presented in each gallery. GPS Science and Social Studies correlations for the exhibit are provided for grades K 8. Exhibit Guides All grades: Exhibit Guides give an overview of an exhibit, with key concepts, information and highlights. Guides are available for A Walk Through Time in Georgia, Giants of the Mesozoic, and Reflections of Culture. Around the Museum Scavenger Hunt Series All grades: Make connections between various themes and Museum exhibits using these scavenger hunts. NatureQuest Resources and GPS correlations Grades K 4: Choose from themed scavenger hunts, Be A Scientist adventures, or Ecosystem Field Guides to guide your students exploration. Special Exhibits and Giant Screen Films When available, we will offer guides and activity sheets for special exhibits and giant screen films. Be sure to check our website often. School Program Summaries Enrich your students school program using pre- and post-visit activities developed by Fernbank educators. Visit /Learn/Field-Trips/School- Programs and click on the Program Summary for each school program to download a comprehensive description with curriculum objectives, key vocabulary and classroom activities.
