1 Hooking up with your Hensley The number one question new Hensley customers ask is How hard is it to hook up? Rest assured, we would not have remained in business for 17 years if it required a physics degree to hook up for a weekend at the state park. Take a moment to view this presentation. 2 Hooking Up with the Hensley Hooking up with a Hensley Arrow or Cub is different than a conventional ball and coupler style hitch. As you can see, you must back a 2 square bar into a funnel that ends in a 2 seat.

3 A Square Peg into a Square Hole 2 In reality, you are trying to hit a 2 square seat with the last 2 of a 2 square bar. (for you engineering types yes, tolerances allow for clearance)

4 When you re at an angle While the tapered hitch box (funnel) allows for some error, if you come in at too sharp an angle, the end of the bar will hang up in the tight 2 box.

5 When you re at an angle However, if you re within a 10 degree angle, the wedges will guide the hitch into the hitch box.

6 Can we make it easier? Many customers have asked, Why don t you use a shorter hitch bar or a wider opening? That s a great question! So great, in fact, that we tried it

7 Know what we found? It makes no difference!

8 2 2 Why? Because you re still trying to insert a 2 square bar into the 2 square hole at the end of the hitch box.

9 While the current design uses the wedges on the hitch bar to guide the bar into place The wide mouth design allows a large gap between the wedges and the hitch box at this same angle. In fact the wider opening of the hitch box creates a problem. Now the hitch box is free to shift even farther off to the wrong angle.

10 Other problems The wide mouth hitch box and short bar create other issues, such as: The lowest point of the hitch is 1 to 1 ½ closer to the ground, which can be a problem with low sitting trailers. The short bar creates increased stress on the linkage system, forcing us to use thicker links (again, driving the low point of the hitch closer to the ground). A longer bar is a longer lever, creating a much more stable and solid connection within the hitch box (imagine the extreme how stable would a 2 long hitch bar be?).

11 Now let s get hitched! Okay, now that you ve got a little background, let s get you hooked up and on the road. Our clever customers have come up with plenty of ideas that have worked in our 17 year history. Here are a few

12 Hitching Hints When you re almost in, use your O\C wrench to pull the hitch bar all the way in. Use the latch on the gap side of the hitch box. This takes very little effort.

13 Hitching Hints Use your truck mirrors, not your towing mirrors, to hook up. If you can see either side of your trailer, you know you re at an angle.

14 Hitching Hints Other ideas Use magnetic hitching sticks to line up the truck and trailer. These are available at any dealer or online. Use a back-up camera (more expensive, but a nice option). Use a little grease on the end of the hitch bar until your new hitch is broken in. Line up that center bolt on your tailgate with the center of the bubble level on the trailer. With your side mirror, line up the fender with your favorite rivet on the trailer. And our favorite don t think to hard about it, after the first few hook-ups you ll do it blindfolded.
