2 BIRTHDAYS Apr: None on Record Hello Everyone, Andy and Marla did a terrific job hosting our April meeting. We had a great turnout of 26 people. Andy said that Marla planned the meeting and he planned the weather. Both were perfect. I would like to send a big "Thank You" to Arlis and Kerry for selling the raffle tickets and calling the numbers for the raffle. We took in over $ Great job. Don't forget we also encourage bringing guests to our meetings. They are most welcome. Next month is the "Mother of All Tech Sessions" to be held at Gil's Garage. This has been an annual event and I feel it is a must attend meeting. Gil, along with other experts share their knowledge to help keep our Classic Thunderbirds properly maintained. If you have any questions that you want answered, this would be the meeting to ask those questions. Also something new this year at Gil's Tech Session, you will have the opportunity to buy your catered lunch with the choice of Pork Ribs or Chicken along with the side dishes and Soda or Water. Look for the full page meeting announcement in this newsletter. I hope to see you at the next meeting on Saturday May 3rd. May: Wes Crandall = 2 Brant Minetti = 7 Jamie Thigpen = 22 ANNIVERSARIES Apr: None on Record May: None on Record Note from the Editor: Cover Photo: Contribution from Dave & Jan Kibler. Remember to Keep your Raffle Tickets for our traditional M.O.A.R. event at our December Meeting. Have you noticed that a member has been missing for several meetings? Give them a ring to see if everything is OK. Note...Member contributions to our newsletter are always welcome. Some clubs publish their members favorites recipes. Please help and share any Tech Tips, Ideas, Life Tip s or any useful information for our edification. Thank You... Do I have your Anniversary & Birthday information? Congratulations to Louise for regaining her Crown as the Raffle Queen. She suffered quite a dry spell. That is one drought that is over. Happy Thunderbirding, Tim Roden, President CTCI #

3 Greetings to Thunderbirds of Sonoma Members, Our April TOS meeting was held at The Schellville Grill and hosted by members, Andy & Marla Preston. It was a lovely, clear and mildly warm day with just enough breeze to keep us cool out on the shaded rear terrace of the restaurant. After a beautiful ride over to Sonoma, we all settled in at the outdoor seating for the meeting and lunch. Those in attendance were Andy & Marla Preston, Jim & Pat Arieta, Duwayne Bahnsen & Kerry Davison, Gil Baumgartner, Dennis & Dee Dee Byrne, Wes Crandall & Louise Johnson, Dolora DeGeer, Dave & Jan Kibler, Brant & Arlis Minetti, Tim & Diane Roden with their guests from Gardnerville, Nevada - Jan & Dan Patten, Tim Gaughan & Debbie Dean, and Herman & Joan Schulze Tim opened the meeting by thanking Andy & Marla for hosting the meeting. Tim announced that a fellow Thunderbird enthusiast is looking to purchase a Red 55, 56, or 57 Tbird. His name is Norman Klein and Tim has his contact information. Our treasurer, Arlis Minetti, gave the treasurer s report, and our club is in good financial health. It was announced that Gil s tech session in Fairfield will happen at next month s meeting on May 3rd, including a reminder that Keith & Jamie will host an "after-tech session happy hour" at their home. There is a BBQ planned for this tech session see this newsletter for more information. Gil announced that there is a caravan of Ford Thunderbirds going to Knott's Berry Farm on April 26, 27, 28th for an ALL FORD EVENT. They are caravanning back home on the 28th. Those who are interested in joining them, please contact him soon. Tim Gaughan asked the group for their opinion and preferences regarding the display of our cars at wineries, etc. And the fact that we need a good place to park along with having an inviting picnic area for our meeting. Also, a discount on wine sales for that winery for our members could be provided. Arlis mentioned that perhaps the club s treasury could assist with some funds for this. Tim has a winery venue in mind. Stay tuned. There were many raffle winners and well, I can say that we all seem to enjoy wine immensely. Ninety percent of the raffle gifts were in tall skinny bags. :-) Respectfully Submitted, DeeDee Byrne Secretary CTCI # 10901

11 Stolen Chevy returned to Northern California owner 30 years later Reprint of Press Democrat article by Reporter Chris Smith. There's all kinds of chrome added under the hood, said Wilson, a retired Lake County mechanic doubly astonished that his 1957 Bel Air has returned and that it's been gorgeously customized. The headers look brand spankin' new, he said. The tires, they look like they haven't even been around the block. A '57 Bel Air is one of the world's most prized collector's cars. This one was stolen from Wilson's place in Clearlake Oaks not just once but twice in the early 1980s. Wilson, who's 65 and battling cancer, had long before quit hoping to see it again when, about three weeks back, a California Highway Patrol investigator named Mike Maleta phoned him from Southern California. Maleta told him a Chevy possibly of interest to him was found in a shipping container at the Port of Los Angeles, awaiting transport to Australia. The discovery came after a routine inspection of outbound cargo containers sparked suspicion by officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They check a lot of cars in the process of being shipped overseas, said Lee Harty, a spokeswoman for the federal agency. Officers isolated the container with the Chevy inside and called in officers of the non-profit National Insurance Crime Bureau. They confirmed that the car's vehicle identification number was listed as belonging to a stolen car. Of all the cars in the shipment to Australia, Harty said, This happened to be the only one that was stolen. She said the rebuilt Bel Air was pulled off the docks just two days before it was to be shipped. Having seized a stolen car, the federal officers called in Maleta, with the CHP. It's his job to contact the rightful owner and try to identify and build a case against the thief. During their phone conversation, Wilson was able to tell the CHP stolen-car investigator a good deal about the '57 Chevy. It was a white-over-yellow two-door in sorry shape when he bought it for $375 from a fellow on the East Coast in Wilson had done a fair bit of work on it when it was stolen from his home in Clearlake Oaks in 1983, then recovered with its engine and transmission removed. Wilson hadn't put it back together when it was stolen again in For 30 years, he couldn't spot a mid-50s Bel Air on the road without wincing. He said the CHP's Maleta told him that since the theft, the car has gone through four owners. Wilson struggles to understand how and why the Department of Motor Vehicles would transfer ownership of a car that had been reported stolen. (Emphasis added) He knows nothing about the person or persons who evidently rebuilt the car and then arranged to ship it to someone in Australia. But he admires the restorer's taste and workmanship. The Bel Air that came back to him Monday on an auto transport truck is a Competition Orange beauty with a custom black, Chevy monogrammed interior and 17-inch racing wheels. There's a 350-horsepower V-8 engine under the hood and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. Since Wilson last saw it, it's been equipped with rack-and-pinion steering and front disc brakes. The frame and suspension are powder-coated in red. The odometer reflects that the remade Chevy has rolled all of nine miles. Somebody put a whole lot of work and money into that car, Wilson said. It was all disassembled and put back. Then he added, I imagine somebody in Australia must be awful upset. He's feeling badly both for the buyer who won't receive the Chevy and the seller whom he presumes sunk a lot of money into the car and was unaware that was stolen property. Wilson had to pay just $900 in transportation, storage and towing fees. He said the DMV notified him that he is liable for 30 years of registration fees, but then backed off that claim. (Emphasis added) The ex-mechanic and connoisseur of vintage Detroit steel has nothing but praise for Customs and Border Protection and the CHP. If not for their good work, he said, his Bel Air would have ended up in Australia. It wasn't the first longmissing classic vehicle that federal and state officers have intercepted in L.A. prior to its shipment overseas. Last fall, the CHP's Maleta and an agent of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Protection ran a check on a 1953 Triumph motorcycle scheduled to be shipped to Japan. They yanked it from the port upon discovering it was stolen from a Nebraska man in years earlier. And late in 2009, Border Protection officers and Maleta seized from the L.A. harbor a 1965 Volkswagen bus that had been snatched from Spokane in 1974 and was bound for the Netherlands. Thirty years after Skip Wilson lost his homely Chevy, he's admiring its new sparkle and wishing it could tell him where it's been. TOS Editors Note: The above experience is one that all Classic Thunderbird Enthusiasts should take note of. Remember, it can happen to you at any time.
