1 NOVEMBER 2013 SEAFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY Your Doorway to the Past, the Present and the Future FROM THE DIRECTOR S DESK The Friends of the Seaford Library had a successful Book and Bake Sale this past September 25 th and 26 th. We would like to thank the Friends for their support (moral and financial) of the library and its mission to serve the cultural, educational, intellectual and recreational needs and interests of the Seaford community. Also, we want to thank the Friends for financing the new Digital Display Unit at the Circulation Desk and for the Nassau County Museum of Art pass. Please consider joining this wonderful group of volunteers!!! The more, the merrier!!! Frank McKenna The library is pleased to announced that it has installed a Walker Display picture hanging system that will allow local artists and photographers to display their artwork and photographs periodically. This display area is next to the Director s Office. If you are interested in displaying your artwork or photography, please contact Kristen Jording at (516) Through My Father s Eyes Tuesday, November 19 th 2:00pm Free Our first display features the work of a very impressive photographer, Phil Stanziola. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mr. Stanziola went to work as a copy boy for the World Telegram and Sun in In 1943, he was drafted into the Army Air Corp, where he fought in the Pacific during World War II. Returning from the War in 1945, he went back to work at the newspaper where he eventually became a photographer. From that time until the paper folded in 1965, he photographed the famous, the infamous and witnessed many historical events. After the demise of the World Journal Tribune, he went to work for the Daily News until he retired in Mr. Stanziola's photographs are part of a historic collection that are displayed at the Library of Congress. Many of the photos will capture your imagination and curiosity and are also a part of a private collection. To take a look at some of these photos, they are located outside the Director's Office. WINTER SPEAKER SERIES The Underground Railroad on Long Island Tuesday, December 3 rd 2:00pm Free Ask a Long Islander today about the name Hicks and they are likely to tell you it's the name of a nursery in Nassau County. The answer, while true, does not tell the tale of the importance of Elias Hicks, whose descendants operate the well-known garden business, and his fellow Quakers as they helped bring about the abolition of slavery. Throughout the communities of what is today Long Island, there are tracks laid as part of the Underground Railroad, the movement that brought escaped slaves to freedom. From Port Washington in the North to Wantagh in the South to Smithtown in the East, Long Island played a vibrant role in the march to freedom. Some former slaves even established permanent communities across the island. Visit the safe houses, many which are still standing today and explore the journey of runaway slaves on Long Island. Golden Age of Radio and Television Monday, November 18 th 2:00pm Free This nostalgia-filled program will examine a wide range of popular radio and television shows and personalities, focusing primarily on the years Using a variety of audio and video clips, participants will have a great opportunity to relive and discuss classic comedy and variety shows spanning both media, newscasters and game show hosts. We will also be discussing commercials for products no longer in existence and famous Mystery and Western programs. Registration begins Monday, November 4 th at the Reference Desk. Cookie Workshop Monday, November 18 th 7:00-9:00pm Cost: $3.00 Great for the Holiday Season! Using one basic mix, create 13 different types of cookies. During this program, we will make the cookie mix base, discuss and share the recipes for the Baker s Dozen Cookie recipes. Registration begins Tuesday, November 5 th at the Reference Desk. Holiday Beaded Ornament Thursday, December 5 th 7:00-9:00pm Cost: $3.00 Linda Reilly will teach you how to create these beautiful holiday ornaments. We will be using colorful beads, wire, charms, and ribbons. Use them to decorate a gift box or decorate your tree this holiday season. Book Discussion The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper Wednesday, December 11 th 3pm Free Join librarian Eric Wasserman for a lively discussion from critically acclaimed author Jonathan Tropper. The residents of Bush Falls, CT, cannot forgive native son Joe Goffman, 34, for writing a best-selling, autobiographical, tell-all novel about their hometown. When he receives a call telling him that his father is in a coma, Joe returns home after years in Manhattan to face his demons. In the marvelously funny and self-deprecating voice of Joe, Tropper fully realizes his characters and tells their stories with poignancy, wit, and charm. Native American Dreams Monday, November 25 th 4:00-5:00pm Learn about Native American life and culture. Touch Native American artifacts, listen to Native Legends and create a Dream Catcher.
