So who would have ever expected that the last weekend of April in Ohio would be cold enough to fly with the winterization plate over the oil cooler? But it was not so on April 21 st, when the Buckeye chapter gathered at Barnstormer Restaurant at the Ohio State University Airport. The meeting was scheduled originally for 4/14, the usual 2 nd Saturday of the month fly-in, but miserable weather forced a one-week postponement. The ideal flying conditions (a high overcast) on April 21 st bought out: Tom & Denise Anderson (PA N3335B), Leon & Carolyn Awalt, Bill & Finn Colgan, Dean & Amy Dayton (PA- 22/20-N2519P), Rick Fansler (PA N8365W), Terry Kuebler (PA22 Colt - N5615Z), Chuck Lawrence (C-182H- N8571S), Garry & Janis Parsell (PA22- N6904D). The Widmans had to skip this fly-in because Ralph was scheduled to fly Young Eagles at Highland Co. Airport. In spite of publishing a lunch menu on their web site and calling ahead to reserve a table, after they arrived our group was surprised to find out Barnstormers does not serve lunch on Saturdays it s breakfast only all day on Saturdays! So we adapted and enjoyed the food, fun, fellowship, and, of course, the flying. (Ed s note: No information was provided about the conversations and conviviality that took place during the meeting, other than no formal business meeting was held.) 2 NEXT MEETING Saturday, May 12, 2018 Our fly-in is at noon at Andy Barnhart Memorial Airport (3OH0 Three-Oscar-Hotel-Zero), 1 mile SE of New Carlisle, Ohio (just north of Wright-Patt AFB). We will eat around noon - this is a carry-in. Our Host, Leroy Lynn will provide a main dish, soft drinks and tableware. Please bring a side dish to share. PLEASE LET LEROY KNOW IF YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING SO HE CAN ANTICIPATE QUANTITIES. (leroylynn1@gmail.com). We will have access to the Flying Angel's club house and restrooms, tables and chairs, but there are no kitchen-type facilities. There could be a microwave or two if anyone bringing food needs one please let Leroy know ahead of time. Parking will be on the west side of the white building on the North-East area of the field next to the entrance from SR 571. Leroy says, Air arrivals should be aware that our club-owned airport does not sell av-gas, per club rules. Leroy also cautions: One important factor is that 3OH0 has only 2000 feet of runway but we do have a hard surface and almost parallel is a grass runway in good condition and almost always mowed. It's not a problem but it behooves one not to be sloppy on approaches! This nostalgic airport is a real gem. It is home to more general aviation aircraft than any other airport in the Dayton region. Fly-in Extra: Spring Fling Pancake Breakfast at Urbana in the morning (17 miles away). In addition to the pancakes, there are some great door prizes. After you land, register for the drawing (free). Prizes include $50 worth of gas. Leroy has become involved in a project with Doug Smith, the guy who restored Ted Tech s Ryan ST (it won Grand Champion Gold at Oshkosh last year) restoring a 1929 Travel Air 6000 at Urbana. If our chapter members would like Doug to show them the Travel Air project then fly down to Barnhart Mem l for lunch at noon, please let Leroy know that you are interested so he can plan accordingly. All of you were so important to Mom and Dad. Things have been really challenging the last couple of years. She has dementia and it has progressed to a point where she can no longer look after herself. She uses a walker now and needs to be prompted to do most everything. Having a conversation can be stressful as she repeats herself constantly. However, she still knows us and still recognizes friends and family. She enjoys visitors so I know she would welcome company, but I wanted everyone to know how things are. She also enjoys getting cards and letters. Please pass along her new address to club members.
